I was born in Denmark but my family moved to Canada when I was 5 (my dad sold furniture for Fritz Hansen). My mom grew up working class in Copenhagen and was old enough to remember and tell me about seeing Christian X on his daily ride in the city. One story (possibly a folk tale) I heard on a tour of the Rundetårn (Round Tower) was that once The Danish King and Russian Czar stood at the top looking out at the city. The Czar bragged that he could order any of his subjects to jump off the tower and they would. The Danish King's reply was that he could lay down and sleep with his head on the lap of any Dane and know that he would wake up alive. Love trumps fear.

As a former royal guard I know I might be biased, but there's a moment which really showcases Crownprince Frederik's humbleness, or " down-to-earthness" that still sticks with me. It's four year's ago, so details may be fuzzy, but it was night ( I remember wearing the night hat) and guarding Christian IIX palace kitchen gate when I recogniced his voice asking a servant on his way home how his sick son was doing. It really stuck with me.

I love our royal family❤️ As a child I lived next to their summer castle and even though their gardens/the surrounding parks are open to the public they use it themselves daily throughout the summer as well as around christmas time to take walks, ride, ski aso. So it is normal to meet them. I have played with the prinses, walked my dog with the queen who was out walking her own dachshunds, the children of our crown prins used to go a local kindergarden and would often be dropped off and picked up there (often on bikes👍🏼) by the crown prins Frederik or his wife Mary. I could go on and on but basically what I want to say is that the danish royal family is very approachable, down to earth and friendly as well as being individually very accomplished in many fields and professonial. The danish monarchy may be one of the oldest in the world, but they a modern royal family and great diplomats for our country❤️🇩🇰

If Denmark was created from scratch right now, we would likely become a republic of very much the same kind as our Icelandic and Finnish brethren, because that would be the simplest way of doing things, but that is not how it actually happened. More than 1000 years ago, we metamorphosed from a tribal community into a monarchy, which has gradually been upgraded and now fits exceptionally well into modern day Denmark while at the same time being a reminder of our deep roots in the past.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Christian X didn't want to bring back absolute power. The reasons for his dismissal of the government in 1920 were a bit more complicated and had to do with the reunification of Denmark and Schleswig after WW1. Following a referendum, Schleswig was to be split in two, with the Northern part (and its Danish majority) returning to Denmark, while the Central part (and its German majority) would remain a part of Germany. The king was not satisfied with this division and ordered the Prime Minister at the time to include the Central part of Schleswig in the reunification process. He refused and chose to resign after a heated discussion with the king, and the king then proceeded to dismiss the rest of the government and installing a Conservative PM who would be more cooperative. This was the king's right according to the constitution, but the action led to massive protests against the crown, and after just five days the king had to back down, dismiss his Conservative PM and install a compromise cabinet until a new general election could be held.

This is sill the case with Danish Royals of the school seeking age. The Royal princes are called upon to-do nation military service in the same way that other young Danish men are call upon to do. At that time it was unthinkable and she could only be titled Countess Danner. She went on to start the Danner Foundation to aid victims of domestic abuse. In our research, Frederik VII seemed like a very popular guy - he had a crappy childhood and decided he would live life his own way - even if it annoyed the aristocracy (and left Denmark with a succession crisis!) And we love that the Scandi royals are very real people - I think it makes the institution even stronger when it is such an anachronism.

And every single one of royals have a great story to be told that not only reflects the time they lived in, but also the maturing and developement of our national mentality. How the different areas traditions, ways of life and also their tenacity to fight for change is very much part of all of us and yet still so different for such a small nation. How we responded to rulers that bankrupted or endagered our independence, and how we in todays age find ourselves having to adapt as the world and our country evolves yet again. Well, there's a reason for that. They're related. Norway's royal family is, like the Danish, of the House of Glücksborg. King Haakon the VII, the grandfather of King Harald, was born Prince Carl of Denmark, younger brother to King Christian the X of Denmark who was the grandfather of the current Queen. Haakon the VII has the honor of being the only Scandinavian monarch to be democratically elected as King of Norway. Otherwise he wouldn't have taken on the duty.

@@Neko141212 they are related to the Swedes as well, but through both King Christian the IX and Queen Victoria. Maude already being a British Princess, had amongst met many cousins, one named Margaretha. She married the Swedish Crown Prince, with whom she had five children. Sadly she died before becoming Queen. She was of course the grandmother of the current King of Sweden. But her only daughter, Ingrid, married the later King Frederik the IX of Denmark. Making Queen Margrethe, named after Margaretha, the first cousin of King Carl Gustav of Sweden.
There is another family relation to the Swedish royal family though, which “helped” spread the lineage even further. The granddaughter of King Christian the IX, Ingeborg, married the Swedish Prince Carl. One of their daughters, Märtha, married the later King Olav of Norway. And another, Astrid, married the later King Leopold of Belgium. Astrid’s daughter, Josephine Charlotte, married the later Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg.
The Danish royal family is related to most of the royal families of Europe. I believe the only ones they are not related to is the Netherlands (apart from cousins from a marriage centuries ago), and Liechtenstein.

I do think it is amusing that both the sitting monarch for Denmark and England, is not only a queen, but the second with a very noteworthy namesake.
For male monarchs, we have alternating names between Christian and Frederick, with the first Christian crowned 1448, who was suceeded by a john, but after that came a christian, and then our first Frederick who was crowned in 1523.
And while I know some people that don't support the monarchy, even those people watch the Queen's New Year's speech.
    (sorry about rambling comment)
And my favorite story about King Christian X, is a story about the supposed flying of the German flag over the Hotel d'Angleterre (then being used as the Germany military headquarters in Copenhagen). The King riding by and seeing the flag, tells a German sentry that this is a violation of the armistice agreement and that the flag must be taken down. The sentry replies that this will not be done. The King then says if the flag is not taken down, he will send a Danish soldier to take it down. The sentry responds, "The soldier will be shot." The King replies "the Danish soldier will be me." According to the story, the flag was taken down.

Once, their was an actor at my school, and he told us about the time he accidently spilled BEER on the queens shoes.
The queen came backstage as the play ended, and the staff and actors had been told to bow before her when she arrived. Of course the actor was exhausted from the play, and had grabed a beer to cool down. but when he bowed, he bowed so much WITH the bottle that the beer came out and splashed the majesty's shoes. when he freaked out and tried to wipe it off, she kicked him away and told him in danish "slap dog af menneske, jeg har fri i aften" witch translates into "Calm down human, it's my day off"

'Menneske' in that context is more like 'man' or 'woman' -- 'Calm down, man....' 'Calm down, woman....' Very colloquial, and nobody in the world uses the word 'human' in that way.

@@RobeTrotting Yup, the Royal Run is always represented in the entire Kingdom but naturally, it’s not possible to have a Royal representative present in each part every year. So usually there is someone present in two-three out of Greenland, Faroes, Jutland, Funen, Zealand or Bornholm. Also, did you know Queen Margrethe II also has an Icelandic surname as she was born princess of Iceland as Iceland was still in a union with The Kingdom of Denmark at the time (until 1944)? This is why Danish is still taught in school in Iceland and many Icelanders speak som Danish and many come to study or live/work in Denmark as young adults.

The late Prince Henrik sometimes complained about his position in the Royal household, but he remained popular. So the Danish Royal Family has been almost free of scandal and are thus better than the British Royal Family.

It would be incredibly bad for their image if they did differentiate on skin color. They govern over 3 different countries (Denmark, Greenland and The Faroes Islands), with Greenland having a whole different ethnic group, the Inuit's, the Faroese being a different culture and also 10 % of the mainland Danish population being not ethnically Danish, it would make them look horrible if they did not accept multiculturalism in their own family, when they rule a multicultural realm.

There was a UK Royal Family inter-racial marriage in 2004 when Lady Davina Windsor (great grandaughter of King George V) married Gary Lewis, a Maori gentleman, in 2004. They received Royal assent (as per law for legitimate descendants) and their children, Senna Kowhai (born 2010) and Tane Maputo (born 2012) have been included on the balcony at Buckingham Palace balcony during Queen's official Birthday celebrations (aka Trooping The Colour). Sadly the couple divorced in 2018.
*Archie is currently great grandchild of a Monarch and currently (tks 2 Queen giving Harry titles upon marriage) Archie is entitled to use Earl of Dumbarton and Baron of Kilkeel if he/his parents so desire. If Prince Charles dies before The Queen does I don't know what happens re Prince title. Think of Prince Edward's kids (ie younger son of the Monarch but not Crown Prince) and compare to what Harry and Harry's kids will be IF Prince Charles becomes king ie grandkids of a monarch not in direct line.... Prince Edward's and Princess Anne's and Princess Margaret's kids (despite all being children of a monarch) didn't get Prince/Princess titles. Of Queen's 3 non Crown Prince children, the man considered an arrogant snob by tabloids (maybe not true) and alleged to be a pedo, Prince Andrew insisted upon getting Duke/Duchess titles for himself and wife and Princess titles for his children - but kids and ex wife get no security! All Queen's 3 other kids only get security when doing official engagements- and none of their kids get security. Also, Prince Edward didnt take top titles of Duke/Duchess - as lower expectations - but instead chose Earl and Countess for himself and wife, they only got Viscount Severn and Lady Louise for kids, not Prince/Princess despite being monarch's grandchildren via male line. Princess Anne's 2 husbands took no titles and her kids have taken none either - Captain Mark Phillips said (according to tabloids) 'I don't want any title I haven't earned' - albeit he was an Olympic medal winner and so was Princess Anne (also European Champion) and their kids: daughter Zara Phillips was Olympian and World Champion and Peter Phillips played Rugby for Scotland under 21s.

I've been to the pride multiple time and its really connecting all sorts of people, workers, politician, celebrities, children, grandparents, everybody. In 1989 the danish parliament was the first in the world to allow same sex registrated partnership. Adoption for gay couples was allowed in 2010. The former ambassador Rufus Gifford (2013-2017) married his husband at the danish city hall in 2015. The wedding was attended by Mary and Frederik the crownprince and crownprincess of Denmark. Gifford and his partner came back here, after the ending of Obamas presidency, to celebrate their anniversary.

This is a bit late, but in regards to the queen. it seems important. In denmark we have a cultural tradition called Revy. Its basicly a theatrical show about current affairs in a very folksy way. Its funny and sarcastic and quite caricaturist. A show of sketches, making fun of politics, famous people, rich people, basicly anyone in the public eye. One guy called Ulf, has been doing this at the scene for 40 years, completely sold out every seat in the theater, for 40 years. One of his characters is in fact the queen. With love and respect he makes fun of her. He dresses up in a galla dress, put on a crown and makes an impressive impresion of her majesty. This year he decided to end his carreer as an actor. So he ended the season, and at that very night, completely by surprice, the Queens turns up unvited, and steps on to the scene and thanked the man for his many years of service on the scene. Some people, through the years, blamed Mr. Ulf for making fun of the Queen, and here she is on stage thanking the man for it. He was stunned, the audience was stunned. It goes to show how very human she is, and her showing this actor such respect, is even more respect to her.
