      Yes, this is one of the biggest things that we learned from this video - the fact that we were explaining it wrong (and probably because we were thinking of it from the American perspective).
      In the States it's all one age limit for all - buying, drinking, or even just being in possession of any type of alcohol is 21+ (which seems crazy). Thanks for helping us to understand it better 😀

    Fun Fact. regarding H.C Andersens fairytales, they are (or at least used to be) the only fairytale writer from europe acknowledged by the CCP in China and used to be mandatory reading in their schools, making his fairytales by far the most known in the world, purely because 1 billion chinese have read his fairytales :) The little mermaid is so famous there, that China rented her for about half a year, and transported the statue to china and back like 10 years ago.

      @@RobeTrotting Very random indeed, but isnt most fun facts about Denmark rather random in the end? :D Like the Danish-Canadian war over Hans island off the coast of north-west greenland, its been called the worlds most polite war and is basically an exchange of hard alcohol, flags and greetings on a small rock in a sea of ice :) And the lengend about how we got our flag, it coudlnt be anymore random that it supposedly fell from heaven during our Baltic crusade more than 800 years ago and that we still use that flag. Theres soo many of these weird facts, even Danes have a hard time rembering most of them, but some of them bring amazement or a smile, maybe its just how us danes are build :)

    Regarding the flag, I think it's worth mentioning that we have "flag days". For instance, if it's the queen's birthday, the whole country puts out flags by the streets or on busses. It's a national celebration. 🇩🇰🇩🇰

    • @thesteelrodent1796
      @thesteelrodent1796 Год назад +2

      and you're not allowed to keep the flag up whenever you feel like it. The flag may only be up between sunrise and sunset on special occasions, like birthdays and other celebrations. During funerals and times of mourning the flag is flown on half mast, but first it is raised to the top to honour the flag and then lowered to the halfway point - no matter how tall your flagpole or mast is. If you want to fly flags from other countries you must always have Dannebrog in a more prominent position, this means Dannebrog must be on a taller flagpole, or if all your flagpoles are the same height, then the Dannebrog must be bigger than the other flags. Cutting up a Dannebrog flag (like to turn it into clothing), or otherwise deliberately damaging it in anyway (like setting it on fire or putting holes in it) is blasphemous and equivalent to treason. These rules are all set in law - it's literally called the flag law - and thus you can be fined (which has happened) if you don't treat the flag with proper respect.

    Hi guys - love the video. Now, here is another interesting fact about Denmark that you may add in the future: There is clean drinking water in every water tap in Denmark!
    Most countries in the world does not have that, not even in the EU. As you know, in America they add Chlorine to the water which is an awful thing to do seen from a Danes perspective.

    • @RobeTrotting
      @RobeTrotting  3 года назад +8

      Thank you, Martin. We're so glad you enjoyed the video :)
      We knew that the water quality in Denmark was great (even though it's a little chalky in Copenhagen). That's super interesting, and amazing, that it's safe from every tap in the country. It makes sense with how much Denmark invests in all types of infrastructure. Sadly, America could learn a bit from Denmark in that regard - it's hard to believe some cities in the USA have poor or unsafe water quality.

    • @_-martin-_
      @_-martin-_ 3 года назад +3

      @@RobeTrotting Keep up the good work. Yes, how much chalk is in the water determines to which degree the water is "hard" or "soft". Either way, it is 100% safe to drink tap water everywhere in DK. Access to clean water is important for good health. Rumour is that the lethal water situation in Flint is happening in thousands of cities in America - that is a real tragedy. That is what happens when you do not pay nor invest taxes in infrastructure :(

      The only places we really notice the hard water is the shower of course, and in our drinks after an ice cube from the tap water melts haha.
      Flint is such a sad story because it didn't have to happen that way and it's being repeated all over the country. We really prefer the Danish system for the overall feeling of community, empathy, and a collective society. I couldn't imagine a city in DK having unsafe water without massive outrage.

    • @_-martin-_
      @_-martin-_ 3 года назад +2

      @@RobeTrotting True, it would never happen that way in Denmark for many reasons, including regulation and the fact it would be considered a public disaster. Clearly, with proper regulation the Flint event could have been avoided. I feel very empathetic to the American people and what happened in Flint really pisses me off. Especially when president Obama visited Flint and asked for a glass of water and took a zip of the water and basically said everything is fine and they should stop worrying. Meanwhile kids are being brain damaged by lead poisoning and folks are dying by increased cancer rates. That is just outright irresponsible! Sorry, I'll calm down now.

    • @RobeTrotting
      @RobeTrotting  3 года назад +2

      @@_-martin-_ No need to calm down, it's a complete outrage - we totally agree with you. America is much better than that and it's sad to say, but politically there's almost no way out. There's so much dirty money in the political system that it would be considered corrupt if it weren't (unfortunately) perfectly legal. The interest of the people is rarely the first concern of our politicians. No country's system is perfect, but Flint is something that shouldn't happen in a "rich country".

    There is a statue of Holger Danske in the dungeons of Kronborg Castle. A great Viking that is said to rise from the grave and help with the fighting if Denmark ever comes in troubles. Didn't happen in WW2, but maybe next time? ;) It is a really cool statue of a badass viking though. He just sits there sleeping, with his long beard, shield and sword.

    Danish scientists have been heavily involved in shaping modern western society the way it is. Both with our progressive mindset (which isn't just a Danish virtue, our Scandinavian neighbours are as progressive in as many ways as we are).
    You've already mentioned some of our most important philosophers and poets/writers as well as perhaps the most well known scientist (Niels Bohr). But did you know that Blutooth is also a danish invention? And I think you failed to mention Arne Jakobsen the world famous designer.
    Oh yeah, this is a bit of a weird one. Jacob August Riis, a journalist, reformator, photographer and lecturer. A dane who journeyed to the US and became a citizen there. He died there in 1914 and his death drew a lot of headlines in the US newspapers because he was the man that Theodore Roosewelt had described as the ideal American.

    • @RobeTrotting
      @RobeTrotting  3 года назад

      We actually have a video coming out in the next week about Jelling, the Jelling Stones and Harald Bluetooth. The invention, however, is not Danish - only the name. We learned it was Ericsson Mobile (Swedish) who invented it and used the name because their original name (PAN) was too difficult to copyright. They built on technology developed by the Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr, who laid the groundwork for wifi and Bluetooth (she worked on spread spectrum radio technology that the US navy adopted in WWII).

    12:30 correction we have no “drinking age” just a “buying age”. Technically you can drink from you’re born, that’s obviously a REALLY bad idea, an may be classified as child endangerment, but my point still stands. For example I’ve been offered wine at my grandparents house since I was at least 13. You have to be 16 to buy alcohol with a percentage up until 16.5%, anything over that and you have to be 18.
    Great video guys👍🏻

    About the alchohol culture in Denmark. Did you know that there technically is no law about how old you need to be to drink?
    You need to be 16 to buy alchohol, and 18 to buy strong alchohol, but no rules states you can't drink if you are under 16. All that stands in the way, is if mom and dad allows it, which most wouldn't cuz they aren't terrible parents, but technically, it's allowed to drink as soon as you are born.

    • @RobeTrotting
      @RobeTrotting  3 года назад +1

      Yes, we actually realized it after the fact - I guess we just made the wrong assumptions based on the facts we did know. Interesting fact
    Hans Christian Andersen actually wrote The Little Mermaid in 1837 as a love letter for a man named Edvard Collin.
    Andersen wrote The Little Mermaid upon the news of Collin's marriage.
    The original story is more of a tragedy than a romance: Here is the mermaid, longing for a life in the sun, but forever trapped in the murky depths of the sea.
