Repotting an Orchid Keiki - Phalaenopsis Orchid Keiki

  • This is a short video showing you how to repot an Orchid Keiki from a Phalaenopsis orchid. This Phalaenopsis orchid also has a couple of partial keiki's which are extremely interesting and bizarre. Keiki's are a great way to propagate orchids without needing to pollinate orchids and grow orchid seedlings.

@@binkb7926 Hi - thanks for getting back. The flowers stayed for a while and then died off and I cut the spike back. The keiki still looking healthy - slow growth but the roots are spreading a new leave sprouting out now. Slow process! :)

Thanks so much for the info. My Keiki is a couple of years old and I left it on the mother plant as it puts out the most amazing blossom spike. Now two more have formed on the plant although I've never done anything to propagate from it. I'm going to try and separate the biggest one. I'm hoping it's going to survive!

I received an orchid from sister in law who had let the flowers drop and it didn't look good at all. I watered it correctly and put it into a south facing window. Suddenly it put on two new flower spikes and a keiki. The Keiki has three leaves and three roots on it. I plan to remove the keiki and plant it soon. The orchid is blooming at the time and just keeps on putting on more flowers at the end of the spikes. It has three spikes, two with flowers and one with the keiki.
    Interesting video and informative also.

Hi Real, Your video is great. I too have had this oddity growth on a Phal. I left the baby on the mother plant and it bloomed. I don't know if it was something I did, but soon after the mother plant started to shrivel. Eventually it died. I still have the baby planted but even after almost a year nothing has happened. The plant is very healthy looking so I am just leaving it to see what will happen. Thanks Patsy

Keikis usually only grow on stressed out Orchids! There's something wrong with the main plant. You should always leave part of the stem on the Keikis so you don't need to handle the plant itself! If you leave the Keikis on the original plant they will bloom but the original plant won't! If you cut the Keikis off the original plant will eventually die which it will also do if you leave it on for to long! Keikis mean the original is about finished and that can happen no matter the age of the original plant! I've had Keikis bloom for several years but they are never as healthy as the original plant and the flowers will always be smaller! The one I had that lived the longest was 6 years but the main plant never bloomed again! It just nourished the Keikis! All this info us on-line for free all you have to do is search Phalaenopsis Orchids and you get all this and more!
