- Filmed in the early 1990's this video shows ex-London Routemaster and other buses in Southend-On-Sea, Essex. These include Leyland Nationals, Atlanteans, DMS Fleelines.
Also seen are bus wars and some ghastly plumes of diesel bus exhaust fumes.
The Routemaster buses were an instant success in Southend, with their introduction resulting in a significant upturn in revenue as passengers voted with their feet and let 'pay on entry' buses pass. The bus operators also found that services which used Routemasters were much better at time keeping, and that they were much more reliable than older buses.
At the end the film explains why the Routemaster buses were eventually withdrawn and advocates trolleybuses as the bus solution to air pollution.
Trolleybuses represent a city-friendly bus transport solution which uses buses that are as clean / non-polluting as trams and trains. A real breath of fresh air.
Live in Lincolnshire now but its great seeing the old buses and also seeing Southend just how I remembered it.I used to go on those buses from Rochford to Southend as a teenager in the 90s.

Southend transport used to run a great service back in early 90s
I was studying O level at Southend College of Technology during ,1986 to 87.
Great Stuff! The first part was shot at the top of the road where I lived in Westcliff on Sea....Nice to see the Classic Cinema still standing!
OH GOD! I remember these Southend Transport and Thamesway buses since I was 2! Remember going to town with my parents on the small Thamesway buses like once a week. Nowadays Arriva and First dominate the Southend network with smaller less frequent services provided by Stephenons of Essex and Regal Busways. With an hourly service to Stansted Airport 7 days a week provided by First called the X30 Stansted Aircoach.
Routemasters are what I grew up with in London..

I thought twice about including the Royal Mail van, as it was not directly relevant to a film about buses. But I realised that it was still of historical interest.
The way I understand the Buses Magazine article, the 'locally unpopular' ex-London DMS Fleetlines were in such a decrepit state that introducing the first batch of 12 Routemaster buses allowed Southend Transport to get rid of them.
So, they were not there for me to film when I was filming!
I'm glad you did film the van, as I was working for Royal Mail doing collections then (including that town collection). The guy you filmed is one of my old colleagues and he got a lot of stick over this as it is the only known footage of him actually doing any work :-)

The hourly service to Stansted Airport sounds quite reasonable, although now that there are more flights from your local airport it may be that local people will want to fly from there instead.

@sleepyrider oh boy, yes, upstairs people were allowed to smoke... and since I do not smoke I rarely went upstairs (even though I liked the view).

Cracking video, which brought back so many memories for me. I know the Royal Mail van driver, BTW! I left Southend in 1997, but this, the sights and sounds, but above all, the buses have taken me back there. Many of those Routemasters are now in preservation. Pity there's no ex-LT Daimler Fleetlines in the clip, but that's nit-picking. Thanks for sharing!
Good old route masters the proper buses
Even better were the buses that came before the Routemasters - trolleybuses! Clean air / zero tailpipe air pollution.
When London Transport started replacing the trolleybuses their plan included reducing the number of bus stops- this was because the diesel buses were slower to accelerate when pulling away from rest so therefore overall journey times would have been extended. But some passengers became wise to this and protested about it.

@muscleco Whilst the old system provided a service it often worked on the basis of local ratepayers bankrolling (subsiding) the municipal buses should they operate at a financial loss.
However I agree that the present system is just as bad. Things are only slightly better in London where services are controlled by a central authority which is often seen to be remote from many communities.
The OFT stifles the type of multi-operator coordination which many see as the best way forward.
@collieultimo hmm, you may also find my next film to be interest...Routemasters in Bournemouth, Hull, York and London's Oxford Street (with very visible waste gas fumes), plus the new Borismaster (still images only), and more.
BTW did you know that the same time as the clean air acts of the 1950's were eliminating the coal sourced smogs so London Transport set out to replace its electric trolleybuses with fume belching Routemaster buses?

The present situation is the WORST of both worlds. Monopolies like LT were based on providing TRANSPORT not profits, and the legacy is still there in the tube stations, trolleys, buses, the maps even! It worked, it was efficient and it had Class.
Pure commercial buses also work, with services to every village, unlike now! Lots of duplication, but lots of niches without current restrictions.
Now it is bureaucratic, inefficient and not about transport. It's about profit and subsidies.
One of my earliest memories, probably around 1991 was getting on one of these blue Routemasters because I had sweets stuck in my teeth. Don't ask me why I remember something so meaningless though, lol.
@citytransportinfo Easyjet bookings from Southend have been very popular, about 3 times or 3% more bookings from Southend than Stansted. Havn't booked any yet but it's a good historical earmark for Southend.
I thought jetbe only flew from southend and its cus Stansted has Rubbish air aka Ryanair
Some of our officials should view this video and read the text. Maybe there is one to understand this. But I fear they make the same mistakes only slower.

@collieultimo Hmm, its likely that they'd disagree with the theme behind my comments and suggest that I have no understanding of the 'real world'.
OK, it is true that modern buses are significantly less polluting than then... but he EU wants to fine our govt. for breaches of air quality regulations, & instead of taking action our govt keeps asking for 'more time'... for what? people to become ill from lung disease?
EU figures suggest that 51,000 pa British people die from air pollution!
