He just explained it. For your child (Step 3, Line 1) you write $2,000. For yourself (Step 3 Line 2) you write $500. For the third line (Add the amounts above) you will write $2,500.
Once you claim your marital status as head of household you are already counting yourself. Step 3 IF your child is below age 17 then that would count as $2000. In total it would be you as head of household and $2000 for your child.
If I claim zero allowances on my NY Withholding IT-2104 form that I have to fill out for this internship that starts in June 2024 and ends in August 2024 where I would only end up making 2.7K for the year at the end of August 2024, and my parents still claim me as a “credit for other dependent” on their 2024 joint tax return next year, could I still file my own 2024 tax return next year too or no despite the fact that I will most likely be claimed?
Yes, you should fill out a Form W-4 for every new job you start. This form tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from your paycheck. If you have multiple jobs or your financial situation changes, you may need to adjust the information on your W-4 to ensure the right amount of tax is withheld, avoiding owing tax or receiving a large refund at year-end.
I did the tax estimator and it told me to put $6,500 in step 3. Why? I don't have kids or dependants. Is it the "other credits" part? If so, why didn't it tell me what these supposed "other credits" are? I don't want it to look like I'm claiming dependants when I'm not.
If it recommended you enter $6,500 in Step 3 of the W-4 form, this likely relates to deductions or credits beyond the standard deduction or dependent-related credits. Step 3 is for claiming tax credits for dependents, but it can also be used to adjust withholding for other tax credits or deductions you're eligible for, not just for dependents. The estimator doesn't always specify which credits it's considering in its calculation, as it's designed to provide a quick estimate rather than a detailed tax planning session. So if you're concerned about appearing to claim dependents when you don't have any, it would be wise to consult directly with a tax professional.
W-4 Step 3 states "If your total income will be $200,000 or less ($400,000 or less if married filing jointly): " Then, generally, if you have three children under the age of 17 who qualify for the Child Tax Credit, you would typically multiply the number of qualifying children (3) by $2,000. This gives you $6,000. You'd then enter this amount in the space provided for "Multiply the number of qualifying children under age 17 by $2,000." If you don't have any other dependents, you would enter $0 for "Multiply the number of other dependents by $500." Then, you would add these amounts together. So, your total for Step 3 would be $6,000, unless you have other credits to add. It's essential to ensure that your children meet the qualifications for the Child Tax Credit when filling this out. If they do, this step will help adjust your withholding to take this credit into account. However, ensure to consult with a tax professional or use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to better understand your individual circumstances and how to optimally fill out this section of the form to reflect your financial situation accurately.

How does a piece of paper make you feel stupid
Yes it can be frustrating when something that seems like it should be straightforward ends up being confusing.
They make things confusing so u can make an honest mistake and get penalties or hire an attorney and they take your money also. This is America
Because they want you to mess up so they can take more of your money
It's intentional.
It was designed that way, lawyers like to feel superior so they created a system that does just that
How to break even as head of house hold and 1 dependent? Still take home a nice paycheck and not owe during tax season ?

@@moneyinstructor yea because I filed this year n got peanuts back and that’s with two dependents smh
Do i have to fill this out even though I have two jobs or will have two jobs?
That’s what I want to know
My 18 year old is a highschool student and dependent on us and my 20 year old daughter is dependent on us too.
This only applies if you have children?
My son want to claim 1 for his exemption this year
If im not married can i skip
If you're not married, you can't skip the W-4 form entirely, but you can skip certain steps that don't apply to you.
If you are not married or have more than 1 job, skip and sign/date. If you have more than 1 job, don't skip. Easy.

Same thing to me. It told me to add 10,650. But I can't add that in step 3 dependants I don't have 5 kids, 😅
the online is broken
I have 3 children what do I put in section 3?
