I just started looking at this lens but I can't believe how expensive it is. I really hope Fuji updates it. I think their new lenses still have plenty of character--beautiful colors, contrast, and bokeh. This lens seems like such a great street photography option for the X-T cameras, I wonder if Fuji isn't updating it because it would really make people question the X100. Fun video!
@@PhillipRPeck agree with you on why they may not want to update the lens. Probably same reason they don’t update the 23mm f2. And yes I think it is a street photography lens for sure. Thanks for stopping by
nice review, very practical on your assessment. Recently I picked up the TTArtisan 25mm f2 manual focus. Obviously a nice short prime without any focus motors, and it helps me slow down to compose and focus shots. And it has a short min focal length of 10 inches. BTW, I tried some evening/nighttime street shots... Dairy Queen on a Friday. I really like one of the photos, so it was worth getting funny looks from people wondering why I had an X-T3 on the table! 😁
@@MichaelGalli88 you have to do anything for the shot right? I just wish I could improve my manual focus skills so I could purchase more manual lenses so I could purchase more manual lenses my time with the lawoa 65 mm has been a trying time. But I'll keep practicing
I got the 18mm f2 as part of a deal with the 35mm f1.4 when the X-Pro1 was launched. I use the X-H2 now but those two lenses still deliver great and soulful results. It's like when I adapt an old, film-era lens to a fuji body, the results have something extra to them. Sharpness is good enough and the "noisy" focus isn't noticed on the street. I think the latest 40mp sensor brings out the best in these older lenses. It loves the latest, razor-sharp lenses but it also resolves that intangible "character" of older lenses. Another lens that I would recommend for that extra dimension in your images is the Viltrox 27mm f1.2. It's a beast in more ways than one and, maybe, is too big for the X-T series, but the results are staggering on the 40mp sensor with film-like warmth and Zeiss-like "pop". (and it's silent!)
@@alanjacobs9216 I agree completely. I own the viltrox and love it’s output for my portrait work. Not sure if I would take it to the streets especially on the x-t50 ( maybe my xt5) but it is an amazing lens. Just borrowed the 27mm fuji to give it a run. More to follow. Thanks for stopping by
Thanks for your take on the 18mm. I have been looking at the 18mm but last week I found the 23mm/f2 used at a store where I had enough of a credit balance to get it free. I guess I’ll try the 23 and if I doesn’t fit my style I can trade it for a 18.

Great overview of the lens. I’m wondering whether to get this lens. My other camera has a fixed 28mm lens so I’m debating whether to get this, the Voigtlander manual focus f2.8 or the Fuji 27mm f2.8. I think I’m leaning towards the 27mm but your video is making me think again!
always great to see PJ and the beard sir 🙂 having owned the 16mm f1.4, the 18mm is a lens I never got to use. the oder Fuji lenses are sought after for good reason - they're excellent! and anyway, speed is overrated and sharpness isn't the be all and end all. a lens should have character. that's why I love my Nikkor 105 macro lens. it ain't fast, it ain't that sharp, but it has a look all of its own. I feel all these modern lenses are starting to look the same as makers chase sharpness over everything else, and that's why a lot of these Chinese lenses are finding a market, and more and more people are getting into adapting older lenses.
Nice discussion of the pros and cons of this lens - and the first time I got to hear that AF motor, and now I get it - it is loud! Your pictures were very nice and I rewatched that bit slowly so I could enjoy them more. I thought they looked nice in terms of sharpness and color and warmth. I like my 16mm f1.4 but it's bigger and heavier so I keep getting tempted to go small. The 50mm f2 was a fine size but it was too tele, I want something wider. I already have the 35mm f1.4 and I'm not into the 23mm fov so I've been wondering about the Voigtlander 27mm f2. It's manual focus and no one in their right mind would call me blazing fast at manual focus, but since I'm a slowpoke anyway, why not consider an interesting, small lens. Just need to consider whether it's the right time to spend that kind of money.
