- Matilda was supposed to have inherited the crown of England after her father, Henry I, died. He made all his
nobles swear multiple times to acknowledge Matilda as the next monarch but when her father finally died Matilda's cousin Stephen of Blois swept in and got himself crowned first. Matilda began to fight for her birthright. This battle for the crown between Matilda and Stephen became known as THE ANARCHY. On February 2, 1141 during the Battle of Lincoln Matilda's forces led by her half brother the Earl of Gloucester, his son in law the Earl of Chester, and large contingent of Welsh forces captured her cousin Stephen of Blois.
And it finally seemed like she might actually finally be queen. Nobles and clergy alike began to believe that now that stephen was in chains, he was mostly likely going to stay that way. The church decided to recognize Matilda as the legitimate ruler of England She was now "The Lady of The English". But the wheel of fortune would soon spin again and the throne would slip again through Matilda's fingers.

💚💚💚 yay! So glad you’re enjoying. More to come!
I've never understood why Matilda didn't execute Stephen. As always amazing video Evelyn.
Most monarchs steered clear of regicide. They didn’t want to set a precedent. Also it would have made the church VERY angry…and Matilda needed the church to back her.
Thats an interesting story. And that is a beautiful place. ❤
Lincoln is an amazing city to explore!! The castle and the cathedral are 🤩

I love Empress Matilda! This whole time period is fascinating!
Thanks Evelyn. Stephen looks a little cross eyed in that portrait.
Indeed. I noticed that, too 😆
I may or may not have chosen that painting on purpose. 😉

Is there some significance to it, do you think? Some hidden meaning or symbolism? Or did the painter just faithfully depict reality? It would be interesting to know, if the portrait was commissioned by him directly. As I would for sure have expected a nobleman or monarch to be wanted to be depicted without such a flaw.
@@raraavis7782 that portrait is definitely not from the 12th Century. Depictions of King Stephen from the period you don’t get a sense of what he might have looked like.
Oh the skull duggery!!
😉😉😉🏰
Oh there’s more 🎉.
Even more videos on her coming up!! 💚😁
I first learned about the Anarchy by reading the Brother Cadfael mystery series which takes place during the Anarchy. While I don’t like either Steven or Matilda it seems that Matilda and her adherents had a serious PR problem with treating the English people so disrespectfully that Team Steven appeared to be the lesser of two evils. Yes, I know that peasants and serfs were looked down upon by the higher echelons of that society, but they were the ones who were made to go out to fight. It would have be easier to fight for the cause if they had been treated with a modicum of respect. You know things were bad when the people of London shut Team Matilda out of London so that she, the rightful heir, couldn’t be crowned queen of England! Personally, I don’t think that her only problem in the people’s eyes was being a woman.
Actually it was a few things … most of the people round Matilda thought because she was a female that she’d take advice given and they would actually be the ones really in charge! That didn’t quite work out- she tried to rule like her father and first husband the Holy Roman Emperor. That didn’t go over well. The reason London tuned had to do with money. Plain and simple. Trade was being effected … and that made them turn. 💚
Being a woman has always been harder in this world
