Down a quiet north Norfolk lane where occasional tractor-loads of sugar beet rumble past and fallen leaves gild the hedge banks, lies The Old Shop. With days growing shorter and the land stripped back to its bones, the old flint walls of the cottage seem to nestle ever more deeply into the autumn landscape.
Today is Old All Hallows’ Eve, which I always like to mark as we have clearly taken another step towards winter during the 13 days we’re now adrift from the Julian Calendar. Nothing dramatic to see here, but there’s a feeling of sweet melancholy as we slide through some beautiful autumnal adventures, admire an enormous heap of warming ash logs, practice a new recorder tune and go in search of the Green Children of St Martin’s Land (aka Crow Wood).
If you enjoy the videos, you might like to subscribe to my Substack newsletter Bracken & Wrack, a magazine-style offering for each new and full moon. Landscape, magic, recipes, seasonal musings, the weird and the wonderful: there’s less focus on the cottage and more on the folklore under our feet. It’s delivered straight to your inbox, is free to subscribe, and you can sign up over at imogenashwin.s.... The upcoming full moon means that another is due soon, and there's a growing archive. There's a paid option too, that has extra content as a thank you for supporting my work. This makes a huge difference to me, giving me time to produce the newsletter and the videos on this channel (which isn’t monetised).
I'm incredibly grateful, too, for any coffees bought for me - thank you, you kind lot.

My new recorder tune is ‘Winter Blessing’ by Carolyn Hillyer.
Hola! Thank-you for sharing your Greensong!
It's the Greensong, the Greensong
It fills me up and carries me along
It's the Greensong, the Greensong
Out in the forest is where I belong! Namaste
Hello to you! Thank you for watching and for sharing your own greensong which was new and delightful to me. You can guess what I’ll be singing next time I walk through Crow Wood ;-) X
I really appreciate you following the deer tracks and capturing the seasons as they happen. It is so wonderful that you share your wisdom and tales with us, thank you Imogen 💜
Thank YOU Michelle for being such a good friend to my little channel. Your kind words mean a lot, I can tell you X
So thankful that Colette pointed you my way! Peaceful and thoughtful. Thank you for sharing. Subscribed. :)
Oh how lovely! Thank you. Colette’s channel has been a huge inspiration to me and I’m really delighted to have your company here in north Norfolk X
Ash burn green, Ash burn dry, a king could warm his slippers by.
Very true! And I hadn’t heard that rhyme before, so thank you for reciting it here X
Colette recommended your lovely channel. I'm a subscriber now and looking forward to seeing more from you in the future. I'm going to explore your past videos too.
Oh thank you Aimee, that’s lovely to hear! I’m looking forward to your company here at The Old Shop X
I enjoyed your telling of the green children of Martinsland, while walking through the wood: amazing small worlds we can travel to on a woodland walk.🐇💚💚
@@9FatraBbits Thank you Cornelia. Yes, it’s really not surprising that woods and forests have inspired so many folk and fairy tales, is if? X
I loved seeing the holly and the ivy together, the song in my head. These are not plants we have at this time of year where I am. And I am quite besotted with your hare. That’s right up my alley. This was such an enjoyable walk in the woods 🌿
@@communicato1 Thank you Elizabeth. I hadn’t realised that you wouldn’t have holly and ivy together where you are. Here, they’re common companions in woodland and you can see why they come to the fore at this time of year. The hare was tricky! But I’m glad I persevered.
Always smile when I see you have posted another video Imogen. I curl up with a cup of tea, escape this crazy world and so enjoy its beauty and calm. Always so interesting and I love your different ways of thinking about things x
@@janeallen7679 Thank you Jane, that really is so wonderful to hear. I’m certainly smiling myself at your lovely words X
New sub here to say hello! I’ve just found your wonderful channel thanks to Colette - I have a feeling that you are going to become a firm favourite channel of mine! I’m a fellow East Anglian (Cambridgeshire). Your surroundings and musings really resonate with me. Thank you :)
Oh how lovely to meet you! Hello! Thank you so much for your truly kind words that have really made me smile. Looking forward to your company here in my little corner of Norfolk X
PS My maternal ancestry is all from Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire so there’s a kinship there too. Where are you based? X
Beautifully done! Truly enjoyed this today. Had to sit today after injury to my hand. This made my day so peace filled. It is so beautiful I would love to go there. Thank you so much! Many many blessings to you. 🙏 🌟
@@starwaters4287 Oh thank you, that’s so lovely to hear and it really does make me so happy to know my video could bring a little peace to a challenging day. I’m sorry to hear about your hand. Wishing you a speedy recovery and many blessings too X
A new subscriber too. Hoping to return to live in the county of my ancestors next year. Your lovely videos will keep me company in the meantime.
Thank you Dee Fay, that’s so nice to hear and to know you’re planning to follow along with my tiny adventures here in the land of the Iceni (and of your own ancestors!) X
Lovely Hare! Thank you for the walk and talk!
Thank you! That hare was certainly a tricksy one and kept me on my toes during the making but happily looks quite at home here at The Old Shop X
so much poetry and mistery in your videos
Thank you, that really makes me happy - poetry and mystery are two of my favourite things. I’m so glad you enjoyed it X
The Hare in the Tiny Wood is perfectly placed ❤️🍂😊
Thank you Colette! I have to say I was so tired after getting back from the six-hour willow weaving session that the Halloween Hare just found the nearest convenient spot to take a rest in, but certainly he has taken to his post with relish :-) Lovely to hear from you - take care and I shall be catching up with your beautiful Bealtaine Cottage videos very soon X
New subscriber. Ms Colette recommended you so I know I’ll enjoy your channel.
Ohh thank you! Lovely to have your company here and to know that we’re kindred spirits through Colette’s wonderful channel that has been such an inspiration to what I have been trying to do here in my own small way X
Im in Maine (US) and Oct. 31 was in the 70F. Never before has it been that warm. Today there is a chill and feels more like autumn. Thanks for the lessons and the music. Lovely to find your channel. Thank you.
@@GoodBeets4ME Hello over in Maine! Thank you for your kind comments and it’s lovely to have your company here on my little channel. Wow that died sound warm! It’s been mild right up to now and I have even dipped into water for a spot of wild ‘swimming’ but there’s that autumnal chill you mention creeping in now.
Hi from West Norfolk .
Just gorgeous, like a Fairy wonderland. I love the Rabbit!! Just found your cannel so now I want to see your other videos to know what your channel is about.
Thank you so much Mollie. They are just little seasonal videos but I really hope you will enjoy them X
A beautiful wood - magical ..
@@RussellAlami Thank you … we’re lucky here having woodland that’s left to do its own thing to a great extent; it does feel quite wild in places X
Beautiful and as interesting, as ever 😍🥰
I learned not so long ago that natural mosses and lichen, so revered in Japanese culture and ecology, are a positive sign of an unpolluted environment.
I too have free growing Honeysuckle in my little garden, as well as Jasmine hedge, and noticeably, new leaves and growth are still showing, which I imagine is due to the relatively warm temperatures even overnight, so far, here on the borders of East Anglia?
Looking forward to your next news x
@@juliethartwell4525 Thank you for your lovely comment and yes, it’s nice to think that the moss and lichen may be a sign of unpolluted air - or at least only moderately! I have always noticed the fresh honeysuckle growth in early November but I think it sometimes gets put back by very sharp frosts. Everything seems to work to its own laws though, dealing with our fluctuating climate as best it can X
It’s always a joy hanging out with you Imogen and that was such an enjoyable wander looking for “the green” I too am intrigued by portals. The willow hare is adorable and that was such a magical tune you played on the recorder, thank you for sharing a little corner of your world with us. Full Moon Blessings for this coming Super Moon 🌝
Thank you for your company Tina - lovely as always to have you with me here at The Old Shop. I'm so happy that you enjoyed my little video. They always seem rather amateurish to me, but I do my best and I love to share a taste of the season here in all its fascinating variety from year to year. Full moon blessings to you too X
