- How to play guitar without a pick for beginner. 5 techniques to make you sound good!✅ Try Lauren's FREE Crash Course for Beginners: www.laurenbateman.com/crashcourse - In this video I am going to go over 5 different techniques for playing the guitar with your fingers. Many students prefer to strum the guitar with their fingers but I often times find that beginner players choose this option because they find using the guitar pick hard.
If that's you, don't give up on the guitar pick yet! But definitely watch this video to learn about the different sound you can get out of strumming your guitar with your fingers.

I've been playing the ukulele without a pick so this was very welcome. You do have very user friendly videos.
Merci beaucoup.
Glad it was helpful!
I find using a bread clip more useful than a pick... You are a wonderful teacher,im going to try some of these techniques.. thankyou 😊
I just got over dropping and moving the pick and now this . I,am sticking with the pick..
Good call!
Thank you so much Lauren, you teach everything in such a clear manner. I have been struggling with how to use my fingers to strum. I'm excited to try these methods out. 😊
Such a good teacher!
Love it-- techniques 4 and 5 appeal to me most, but then again, I love percussion. Also played drums in school.
I've been an electric bass player for almost 20 years; I've only just picked up the acoustic guitar in the last few lol. I've always been a finger stylist and I love that you've given the finger style some validation!!! Thank you for another great lesson! ❤😊
I like using my fingers.. but lead I use pick and I Travis pick too. Yes, I hate the pick noise...falls spins... drops out of my finger picks need better human factors engineering design and a thin pick when I do use it. I use my middle finger to pluck index to strum and grow my nail a bit longer so I can alternate pick on lead... I got it down to a science...good video
Thanks for watching!!!
Great lesson Lauren! Your Technique 3 is my go to on the back porch, but I will give your #'s 4&5 a try! Thanks for everything you do, from a fellow Camaro owner...
Thk you for sharing those great techniques ❤
Glad it helped!
The base, treble technique looks cool. I'm going to try it in my practice today. Thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome 😊
I always carry picks. The only issue i used to have is tuning. But now we have tuner aps on cell phones.
Yes those are super helpful.
Thank you! I play without pick, great tutorial.
Oh my God I love it
This is great! I’m a picker and love hearing the new techniques. 🥰 Thank you Lauren! 😊 Dexterity training is great for my aging gray matter.
You're so welcome!
Very good lesson, lots of sound advice.i always encourage my students to grow thumb nail for both strumming and thumb picking.
Nice.
I have used fingers pretty much forever unless I’m using a guitar in large groups. Three things I have found: keep the nails trimmed well, it’s easier for me to find the string I’m looking to play, need it for songs combining both strumming and finger picking.
Thank you
You're welcome
Haha thank you am really catching up more faster with your videos ,love you betty.everist uganda 🇺🇬 love u❤❤❤
Thanks for watching!
Yep .43mm was perfect for me .34mm was to thin I found if I'm going to be shredding some pentatonic I like a quit thick pick. Though over all I'm a thumb strummer but there are some song that need a pick to play the sound sweet. Thanks again Lauren I can only play because of your great teaching. Latest I learnt is under the milky by the church😊. P.S. I've had to buy emery boards to sand side of thumb and nail use to bite nails bad so had some custom work needed on thumb😅😅. And upgraded to $700 Takamine G-series it makes playing so much more satisfying❤
Thanks for watching and for sharing!
Big fan from India love you❤
Technique 5 AMAZING
Right?!
Hey Lauren! I really needed to see this lesson!!! Thanx for doing it!
It's resolved a lot of questions and doubt I've had about strumming and using my thumb/ fingers instead of a pick (all the time).
What I still don't remember and unsure of - that the camera doesn't show is on the down/up strumming are you you strumming all 5-1 strings while picking the 6th string with your thumb (and index finger)???
Since we're not in the room with you - is there anyway you can have a camera angle or zoom really close in so we can really see your fingers at the strings?
Maybe it's just me... 🤔🤷🏾♀️
Thanx again for this one!!!
You don’t get all the strings on an up strum. Maybe bottom 3 or 4.
I haven’t given up on the pick but I sure do prefer to use my fingers! I love to feel the strings with my fingers I just feel so much more connected!
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic. ❤
Thanks for watching!
@@LaurenBateman My pleasure.
Am just a beginner have never touched on the guitor since was born😂waiting anxiously for my guitar to come early next month, and i start doing my self study however watching this made me believe learning guitar might be easy ,thanks bet.believe will make it 😊
Best of luck!
Hi Lauren Can you do a tutorial on the song Diamond girl by Seals and Crofts? Especially that strum pattern 🙄 I love this song thank you your channel is wonderful ❤
Oooo I did Summer Breeze. Will look at diamond girl.
I love your video lesson ..but just to let you know I too use my fingers all the time to play the guitar ..I don't like the pick as it make a sound very loud
Thanks for watching!
Using finger strumming allows you to sing better over the sound of the guitar. The pick makes a louder sound and harder to hear vocals without mic.
Thanks for watching!
Mastering the pick is damn hard, much harder than people realise. Especially when you're mostly thinking about the upcoming chord change. But a well-strummed song with a pick sounds amazing. I'll keep on bashing away and hopefully sound better eventually.
Thanks for watching!
THANKS for Your suggestions!
Proud Mary ☺️
You are so welcome!
Hello can you do guitar tutorial on misfits Saturday night with bar chords please? I can’t find proper tutorial for this song on whole yt
Please course your song request to this link: www.laurenbateman.com/faq/
I used to go in a local coffee shop with hanging guitars. It was then I decided, I never wanted to be vulnerable without a pick again. Living in an apartment environment is great with fingerpicking. I had to buy an electric guitar to practice my pick strumming (it’s rather quiet)
Thanks for sharing!
Hate the pick, love playing with thumb and fingers
I like the pick
Thanks for watching!
Dont forget the pain of building calius to form when picking.
It just comes naturally to use my fingers. I can use a pick but something inside me tells me to toss it. Lol. There are great players that don’t use picks. Like when I first saw Jeff Beck I was amazed. I do like using picks too
Thanks for watching!
older player and self taught-----never used a pick for the exact same reasons you mention-----was mostly told YOU GOTTA USE A PICK-----its how i want to be heard
should add trying to learn fingerpicking style
Yeah, definitely add Fingerpicking you will love it!
🙏🎸☯️
I tried my first few times with a pic it just wasn't comfortable to me. I've never used one again. Oh btw I got picked ...to open for a fourth of July gig opening the show second time to do this. Oh yea I will be your most famous student...I wasn't joking
Thanks for sharing and congratulations with your gig! Wishing you all the best! :D
I only use my fingers. I'm no good with a pick
Me too ❤
I’m sure u do!!!😮😢😅
I am the same way. I can’t seem to use the pick to save my soul. And, I am happy to use my fingers, but I hurt my thumb. Because the string kept coming between my skin and my finger nail. So I tried to use the pick and I am inept.
Without a pick😊

How the hell do you break a pick?
