    Just caught your show. Some great tips and you added to my knowledge. Here (Arizona, Sonoran desert), mesquite has been planted around and in gardens for several thousand years. Fine hair roots stabilize loose, soft soils like along canal banks, it provides light shade, wind protection, food high in sugar and protein, the beans help to stabilize the pancreas (all American beans do), cordage, firewood, and so on. Mesquite, not maize, has always been the mother of the garden. Add cowpeas for dry beans and green beans, and you add far more nitrogen than they use, as well as an exfoliar nectary. niio

      I'm guessing it's against gophers, they're omnipresent in California. When we lived there, we did the same

       @Leonidimus59 is correct. Erin and Gilberto use the chicken wire cages to prevent gophers from damaging the plants' roots. Erin mentioned the problem in another video.
      I'm glad I don't have that problem in Colorado! Unfortunately, I have Ground Squirrels here, and they wreak havoc eating my seedlings, melons and peas! I try to live by Buddha's teachings, so I don't kill them. Instead, I do the compassionate thing and feed them. I simply plant more, and let the rodents have their share. Seeds are cheap!
      Our barn cat is not a Buddhist, though. If I could convince him to come hang out in the garden, he'd feast on them! But he get's a belly-ful of them without leaving the barn!

    Question...why are you planting the tree in a metal wire basket?

  • @AchimDrescher
    @AchimDrescher 3 месяца назад +2

    What about the most common nitrogen fixers, Clover, Lupines, Peas and beans.

  • @Leonidimus59
    @Leonidimus59 3 месяца назад +8

    What if my soil is missing specific types of nitrogen fixing bacteria? Will the nitrogen fixing shrub ever form a symbiotic relationship then?

    • @Goldifarms
      @Goldifarms  3 месяца назад +5

      Great question 🌱 if your nitrogen fixing plants are not thriving despite proper care, it could indicate a lack of these beneficial bacteria. A soil test can also help you determine this. If that’s the case, you might consider inoculating the soil with these bacteria to support the growth of nitrogen-fixing plants. Inoculate can be purchased online or at garden stores, it can also be harvested from the wild.

    • @chessman483
      @chessman483 3 месяца назад +4

      All we do on our terrible soil is put mulch , mainly weeds and grass clippings and the soil becomes good enough to support nitrogen fixes. We never ever get soil tests or go to nurseries.

    Noticed you mentioned a syntropic farming guidebook by Roger Gietzen. Is that a book you'd recommend as a first read on syntropic farming? I am pretty new to all this so don't know much about it, except for what I learned from binging on youtube videos haha.

      Thank you 🙏 Snakes aren't an issue for us. Some species of snakes we welcome. I have friends who deal with rattlesnakes - but they are in much more wild spaces, it's very suburban over here. There are lots of cats and cars that probably reduce the snake population over here.
