I really enjoyed this video. Born in 1953 my Dad built a 3 level mountain tiered layout with lumber nnd painted cement for the mountains. He was really handy with his electroinics background from years in the Air Force. It was started around 1958 and our Lional Santa Fe passenger set was from 1960. It all came down when I started college in 1971 as the prior years it had already started collecting dust in our basement. I was never a model railroader but years later in 5 weekend to weekend trips I rode all the AMTRAK long distance routes west of St. Louis / Chicago to see The West. That was how Lionel rubbed off on me. I really enjoyed your video and all your background information.
Love postwar Lionel. My dad left me a 2343 with the aluminum passenger cars & a Lionel 623 switcher with plenty of 6464 box cars. I still have them & they run great. These trains will run forever & provide years of joy. You are right, they are magical! They embody everything a model train should be, Tough, rugged, mechanically sound & absolutely gorgeous!
Dennis Impallomeni Miller engineering did the Pabst sign very accurately. I could see the actual sign out of my bedroom window as a kid. I wasn’t aware that they do other famous brands, I’ll have to look at their catalog.
machia0705 omg they make a lot of signs and get the power supply and they have a connection block that the power supply plugs into the signs run on 4.5 vdc or 3 battery’s so I bought the power supply and block the coming soon signs peppermint patty is sexy
Even if someone is not into trains, being made from 1948-1966 by the original Corp. makes it such a recognizable piece of postwar Americana. People either had one, knew someone who had one, or always wanted one. One of those small life pleasures. They look great Bunk.
First time here. While describing the iconic Santa Fe warbonnet, you mentioned the way they look, how they run, and how they sound. But you failed to mention how they SMELL. Yes, to old guys like me, the smell of ozone coming from the postwar Lionel motors takes me back to my childhood in the 1950s. I have these engines in boxed sets and love them all. Along with my mint GG1 set, arguably the F3 is my favorite.
This is my up most favorite locomotive! I been wanting a set of 2343 Santa fe since I was 5 years old, my icon is elastigirl holding a 2343 Santa fe for goodness sake! Thanks for sharing these beautiful trains, I love them!
Just started watching this video and 2 things you said really stand out to me. The first is when you said when people talk about Lionel trains the Santa Fe F3s engine is what they think of. Secondly buy a train because you like it not as an investment! Enjoyed the video. For me the 2383 are my favorites. I like the Black truck side frames and vertical motors for performance.

LOVE your tribute to both the engines & the 2nd great boom (1st was 1948-58 roughly). Surprised you aren't collecting all the variations of that iconic F3: the MTH Premier (Proto 2 or 3), the Rail King Scale (vitually identical to Lionel PW but w/ smoke!), Lionel's 90's re-issues (pass. cars have silhouette people) and the latest gen Lionels, super-detailed w/ Legacy. I know I've missed a few, and didn't supply model numbers, but you get the gist. The only PW one I have is a cheapie 2383, single motored unit. Grew up w/ it. I do have a 2344 set of NYC's, the "growlers." Love 'em too.
I always liked the postwar Santa Fe but not with modern era freight cars like I see here. I like the 1950 to 1954 Golden Years the best. I would collect 6464 near scale boxcars and many of the other cars made in those years only. The new Postwar Conventional Classics are very nice and would be tempted to buy a few sets. I just saw the new Santa Fe F-3 AA freight set for 2021. I would like to have that one because it looks great and has all the sound features plus smoke too. Nice of Lionel to do that for us postwar lovers.

Great Video!! My first Lionel F3 Santa Fe. 2353 with the B unit for an ABA combo. I have my original freight set and was lucky enough to get the 2530, 31, 32, 33. 34 passenger cars! And I bought a Greenburg book to take them apart to lube them up....but I haven't tried yet?????

@@CountryBunkersTrains I got a GREAT price on eBay for the set. Original boxes except for the baggage car. Found a box for it and really had to work at repairing the box. But like you say it's 70 yrs old. Later I picked up a second Pullman car for a song....like $25/30 in it's box. I was the only one who bid on it. My baggage car is the small door. If you want the Large door one .... bring your gold card. I also bought a 2333 NYC AA unit ('48/'49) and grabbed a set of passenger cars to run behind it from '91 they look great. Take Care...Keep the videos coming. Your layout is FANTASTIC!!!
HEY, I NEED YOUR HELP!!! Did you say you upgraded one of you MTH engines??? I bought a 20-3042-1.....M-1 MONSTER Its almost 40" long. Thinking ah pro-sound no PROBLEM...YES PROBLEM, it doesn't work with DCS. My 2 072 lines are DCS. I'd need to upgrade the engine. I'm concerned about 1. my ability to do it. 2. cost to have it done. 3. try to figure out a way to be able to which 1 line back and forth from DCS to a Z-controller I have brick I'd just need to get a Z-controller........An option I don't like argue with the guy and send it back.....AS I SAID HELP!
Joe Gennari Thats a gorgeous engine! She’s huge! You are correct though. Protosound 1. Conventional control, not command control. I haven’t done an MTH PS3 upgrade myself, but had my local guy do an upgrade for me on my Empire State express. It was a little costly, but well worth it to me. Only really have 2 options which it sounds like you already know. Either upgrade the engine, or get a transformer to power it. It cost me $500 for the upgrade on my Empire State express. That was for the kit and labor. Are your 2 O72 loops separate or running off of the same power? If separated, can just install the transformer through the TIU, and set as “direct power” for the TIU. That’s how I run my TIU. This way I can still run the postwar stuff with my ZW’s conventionally, or turn em all the way up to run the command control stuff (18 volts).
Great-looking layout, but I notice those scale crossing gates (nice!) are a bit slow to drop (about 1/2 way thru the train!) when the UP hopper train is going past.

Mine is a MTH and I had it signed by Mike Wolfe the first Train he ever signed was mine And he did not want too he felt like he was ruining it but Tony from roundhouse said to Mike that’s what he wants so I had a bunch signed
I’m fighting that battle now, Original or TMCC I always thought the 1950 773 would be nice to have but having owned the 2005 TMCC PWC series 773 with the bigger tender is hard to resist
OKAY.... How did you run that?? Did you run it from a separate transformer??? Oh $500 that's what I paid for the M-1 !!!!! I can't squeeze another 500 out!! Couldn't I Take one of the two 072 loops and wire it to a separate terminal block and run it to a Z-Contoller powered by a 100 watt brick. And when I don't use the M-1 switch the second brick back to the TIU on Fixed Voltage 2 and I'd be able to run all 3 trains again thru the remote??? By the way do I have to name the tracks 1 & 2 if I add a second brick to the TIU to run All three trains. That's a problem I'm having now. I can't run all three on 1 brick. 2 will work, but the second I start the 3rd the breaker kicks out. Someone told me I could hook 2 of the same watt bricks to one imput on the TIU for more power. My son said Dad I wouldn't do that. You could FRY something Like the TIU our your engines THANKS!!!
Joe Gennari Absolutely. Just wire one of the O72 loops to a different terminal on the TIU, and have the power coming in from a Z controller. Don’t have to name the tracks for different terminals. The TIU will send signals out from any of the terminals. I’d leave it set up as a fixed voltage output, that way you can control the power with the Z controller. I’ve tried controlling the power output with the DCS remote with a brick, but was a lot easier to just use the transformer itself. Don’t run 2 bricks or transformers on the same terminals. It is too much power for the TIU. Older TIU’s didn’t have breakers, and it will fry something. If it’s a newer model it will keep tripping the breaker as it’s too much power. I think the Lionel 180w bricks are at the upper end for power through a TIU by themselves.
@@CountryBunkersTrains I was shocked to put it mildly! The guy I bought the M-1 from called me. He has a shop in NY and is going to send me stuff about his shop, his Facebook page and other stuff. He does have Post War stuff, I'll see what he sends and let you know. And basically I have everything I need to run the M-1. I watched a video from Eric from Eric's trains on running conventional engines with DCS. I will watch it a few more times and write it down. The DCS manual wasn't to clear for me on how to do it. But I feel really confident now and can hardly wait for the engine to get here. Plus adding the second brick and switching voltage setups will eliminate the breaker problem. Thanks for your imput too. Wish you lived closer! My one train buddy is LIONEL Post War only. He builds most of his on scenery and has a bunch of old Lionel operating cars and things. The other is HO guy. Started his own club and has a bunch of guys that help build, maintain and run the MASSIVE layout. They have other clubs come there just to run the setup. 10/12 remotes. And they build a train and pass it from station to station. It is UNBELIEVABLE. Since the covid thing my Lionel buddy and I have not gotten together, he's really concerned about it. Hey STAY SAFE AND WELL!!!

I personally was ecstatic since i could own road name and color scheme i could only hope for. as a side note start buying Lionel for my son and built his layout not flyer. avoiding a years of frustration. running flyer is a labor of love. lol content is wonderful. curious s why do you run UP passenger behind you F3? not some classic silver streamline?

Fixed that earlier this year and picked up some postwar inspired 90’s remake silver cars for them. They look great together.

I have the 1950 passenger set in original boxes, Cost $100.00 back then . A lot of money back then . And , yes , I took the battery out of the horn.

Hey can I used part number 6691rcmc800 for my Lionel legacy Norfolk southern engine 6963
I tried looking the part number up, but did not come across anything. What is it? I’m not exactly a repair guy, but can try to look into it.

May say a F7, but has been upgraded to 1850hp which is a f9
