Not an expert. Russian is my second language, and as far I'm concerned, they like the hard hitting 808's, fast-paced rhythm and cowbell motives. Besides, it is quite easy to do (sorry, no harm). A lot of phonk artists are from Russia. So yeah, Russia took it and made it their own thing, I suppose. They also have this saying like 'Фонкерам салам, остальным соболезную', which humourously means 'Salam to phonkers, my concoledences to the rest'. By this they address to the in-crowd phonk artists and listeners.
Russian culture in many aspects is a mixture of many world cultures, which makes it collective and, at the same time, separate. That's what exactly happened to phonk: we love it, we take it and we evolve it
Before watching this video, I'm going to assume the final product will be Drift Phonk and that is what he'll understand as Phonk music and not what it is at it's base.
Very nice and honest video with lots of background for those who didn’t know. I like how you incorporated the history part and especially dj spanish fly (the inventor) and the fact how much it has influenced today’s rap
video should be called "i learned how to make *drift* phonk in 24 hours". not tryna gatekeep, it's cool that people get more interested in phonk, but i just find it a lil sad a sub genre took over the spotify playlist and therefore rewrote what people define as phonk (like the guy giving you song recommendations did). an actual just phonk type beat would be closer to soudiere, inteus or dj smokey, for example. and because drift phonk is understood as just phonk, other sub genres often get buried or newer fans dont even recognise them as phonk anymore. cowbells are common in phonk, but they dont define the genre. lxst cxntury, kedela, anxtres, oldflop, bladefear, finivoid, blessed mane and so many more rarely get mentioned when people talk about phonk.
Big fan of phonk, and French, it's the first english video I've seen on the creation of phonk type music, and it's done by someone who doesn't know this genre. Incredible ! Great work, thanks for this super cool moment ! edit : thanks for the subtitles, it helps sometimes! edit 2 : Russians are fond of phonk, and a subgenre comes straight from them, the "drift phonk". as an example I can cite LXST CXNTURY, a russian drift phonk producer
everyone knows DJ Smokey is the real source of all this by far for years ... Spaceghostpurrp coined the term and had a lot of very popular sound effects but DJ Smokey put the whole sound on his back since the origination days "Whachu stealin' boxes for? What you tryna build, a clubhouse?" that's exactly what he did. TikTok kids and others need to pay their due respects
The phonk genre has some incredibly talented people in the community in it, leading reaaally far back into the early 2000's. Some good music you should listen to if you are into this music is Razor Bones by Kaito Shoma, Zep Tepi by Kordhell, and Vendetta! by MUPP and Sadfriendd.

I think the missing link as to how Phonk recently blew up and made it all the way to Russia is Terriyaki Boyz "Tokyo Drift". The song itself, I have a strong feeling, was inspired by the Memphis aesthetic. That said, the Tokyo Drift intro with the bell melody just fit so perfectly with drifting. Like, whenever you see a car gliding sideways the first thing you think about is "bells". Unfortunately, that song was kind of the only one that sounded that way, and it left a void that drift and tuner enthusiasts needed to be filled. So my speculation is, when the first recent revival of Memphis rap came out, drift racing enthusiasts immediately jumped in on the music... Russians did so more than anybody else. It also fit the Russian illegal street drift culture perfectly. When I first heard of Phonk, it reminded me a lot of Tokyo Drift. I loaded the song on an editor and stripped off the beat. On my controller I played this track on top of a hard-hitting Trap type beat and boy was it a match made in heaven.
Hey @EdTalenti, you don't only need a cowbell for the melody, you can use another sound (idk the name) but as a reference, listen to Disaster by KSLV (I'd recommend just listen to the drop). That sound is nasty af. As always, keep up the good work!
Man, I discovered phonk in middle of 2022 but really got into it in the December of 2022. Just listening to it makes me feel like Homelander, floating above the city staring down, ready to wreck havoc.

you have helped me so much when it comes to making music! thanks allot for your videos.
I’m so happy to hear that. Thank you for watching the content 🙏🙏
Haha awesome! Glad to see more artists exploring phonk, it's such an underrated genre!
I'm 32 lived in Memphis my whole life and to see people just now learning about our Music is crazy to me.
Ed: "I think we're gonna start simple. We need a cowbell."
Ed: *plays one riff*
Me: "Ok this is fire already"
and i think this is beautiful
Phonk is one of my primary genres and u did it so well, congratulations!
Same my soundcloud playlist on phonk...is long.
@@Colmenero444 that's fine, I've only uploaded my old songs and I plan to upload the new ones soon
Same, before Phonk i was listening to random generes like Indie or electronic or popular songs
actual phonk or drift phonk?

Perfect timing I was actually about to search a tutorial. Ed, can you read my mind? First the newsletter and now this tutorial? U crazy
The energy I feel from seeing you enjoying it is incredible!
Before watching this video, I'm going to assume the final product will be Drift Phonk and that is what he'll understand as Phonk music and not what it is at it's base.
Phonk is my favorite genre of music, one of my favorite songs are like Murder Plot and Sahara
Very nice and honest video with lots of background for those who didn’t know. I like how you incorporated the history part and especially dj spanish fly (the inventor) and the fact how much it has influenced today’s rap
I didn’t even know this was a genre but apparently I’ve been listening to phonk this whole time. My favs have a genre name now!!
My Genre Since 2014... Im soo proud.. im gonna cry in BLOOD.
I need more of this, the world needs more EdTalenti's Phonk! 👾
video should be called "i learned how to make *drift* phonk in 24 hours". not tryna gatekeep, it's cool that people get more interested in phonk, but i just find it a lil sad a sub genre took over the spotify playlist and therefore rewrote what people define as phonk (like the guy giving you song recommendations did). an actual just phonk type beat would be closer to soudiere, inteus or dj smokey, for example. and because drift phonk is understood as just phonk, other sub genres often get buried or newer fans dont even recognise them as phonk anymore. cowbells are common in phonk, but they dont define the genre. lxst cxntury, kedela, anxtres, oldflop, bladefear, finivoid, blessed mane and so many more rarely get mentioned when people talk about phonk.
4:13 I have to say I am Russian by nature and not gonna lie,
when I discovered Phonk a couple years ago. I fell in love
It's Nice To See That People Are Recognising Phonk/Cowbell in general the underground. very proud of my community!
Time for a Brazilian funk beat now, we waiting for this one
Phonk / Memphis Rap has always been cool. I liked it a lot in 2011 when spaceghost was hot. I think modern phonk is a little too cowbelly 😅
Facts I just listen to underground / wavy phonk like DJ Smokey, Always Proper and etc
Thats because mainstream media such as tiktok made the lines between phonk and its subgenres such a drift phonk (cowbells) very blurred.
Yeah this is not phonk is a drift phonk but even a autor of the video call it "phonk" pfff
Some songs dont have as mucj cowbell tho like this ruclips.net/video/RzUQO35nWxY/видео.html
@@kawhiie1108 it's infuriating lol
This is a ‘Drift Phonk’ song, a sub genre of Phonk. There’s so much more to Pho than just fast paced cowbell songs
everyone knows DJ Smokey is the real source of all this by far for years ...
Someone should turn the sick drum solos from that one guy on youtube with his buckets into a phonk thing.
Took you a while to cover Memphis rap, but this is the video that the genre deserves. Thanks Ed.

I’m russian and I listen to Phonk 24/7 when I’m doing homework, washing dishes anything it encourages and gives energy. 6:11
7:10 DEEPER ON THE VOICE 😎
this was GENUINELY entertaining, and the beat was FIIIIRE
The phonk genre has some incredibly talented people in the community in it, leading reaaally far back into the early 2000's. Some good music you should listen to if you are into this music is Razor Bones by Kaito Shoma, Zep Tepi by Kordhell, and Vendetta! by MUPP and Sadfriendd.
Actually into the 1990s with some Memphis rappers such as 3 6 mafia and others (From what I understand I'm not Extra educated on phonk)
kordhell sounds like game boss music shit, sadfriend with his ass modern type of voice isnt even close to phonk, mupp makes (some) decent stuff, i agree on kaito tho
WE NEED THE FULL VERSION TO THIS MASTERPIECE MAN!
After like a year the cowbell hits different like always
Each time he added a new beat/sound thingy the more I got hyped with him 😂
This clearly deserves a part two. Fun video.
In the beginning when the guy introduced him to phonk, if Metamorphosis was one of the songs, he would've loved phonk even more.
No sabes cuanto necesitaba esto, el phonk es mi genero favorito y tu eres el productor que mas me inspira dia a dia, gracias Ed, eres un genio!
dude, unrelated to the theme of the video, you're amazing. just found out your channel, best thing to ever happen. loved your energy, loved how you dedicate to learn new things and love how you are recording you just having fun. you have amazing talent, keep up. u just got a new sub
Phonk genre are 🔥🤙🏻❤
Love from Philippines 🇵🇭 btw
As always, keep up the good work!
disaster uses the same cowbell just pitched down

Man, I discovered phonk in middle of 2022 but really got into it in the December of 2022. Just listening to it makes me feel like Homelander, floating above the city staring down, ready to wreck havoc.
same, i'm disappointed that i didn't know about it earlier
