Thanks for the video! I got my Amex Hilton in Feb and Platinum in end of March. I finally got out of pop-up jail yesterday when my Amex Gold was approved for 75k points and $250 dining statement credit via Resy. For me several things happened that I believe got me out: 1) High high spend, I was spending like crazy pre-booking all my summer holidays, so I was always hitting $2k per month statement balance and fully paying off. I applied one day before my 2nd statement hit, and denied. Literally day after, and approved. 2) Credit score increased by 20 points and waited 2 days ish after I found out 3) Even spending on both my cards, I didn't just spend massively on Platinum but on Hilton as well 4) I just received my 80k Platinum bonus 2 weeks ago, but not yet on HIlton So my reccomendations: 1) Apply after high spend months like when booking a trip 2) Even spending if you can on mulitple cards 3) Only have max 1 pending spending rewards offer
I got the dreaded pop-up on a Hilton Aspire card this week :( I ended up applying for it anyway and was approved. Yay! I decided that the Anniversary night and Diamond status (upcoming family trip) were worth it to me. No welcome bonus :( but it does get pretty good multipliers at Hilton properties.
Incredible video! Thank you for sharing. Once again out doing the bigger credit/finance guys. This is the first time I’ve heard of the pop up window but I’ll definitely know to come back to this video in the future. You’re a great service to the community by unveiling the process from start to finish I know I’m not the only one that enjoys watching it.
Haha, just got this pop up last week. Was denied for Amex Bonvoy Brilliant Bonus, thankfully I qualified for the Marriott Business Bonus. Funny because both are a 75k bonus 😂.
Lmao I Just been put in pop up jail. 😂 I got the Platinum & Gold Cards in the Last Couple of months with the Sign Up Bonuses. I literally just now tried to apply for the Hilton Aspire Card. And Boom pop up jail. Hehe I gotta chill a fall back
Now I’ll know not to freak out if I get this pop up in the future. It’s just Amex protecting their bottom line. Super valuable information, as always! 👍🏼
Educational Indeed! Gotten their bonuses in Feb and still in jail. No cards closed, no unused cards. Still went ahead and got the Blue cash preferred though 😂! Thanks Jeff!
@@MarkReese Your videos always are helpful Jeff! Saying this the umpteenth time, but it is true: you do put a lot of time in gathering this info and presenting it in such fluid manner. Highly consistent! 👍
Currently in pop-up jail AND over 5/24, hahaha Upgrade my Gold card for the Platinum then re-applied for Gold and got the infamous pop-up window. I need fo Gold to build up these travel points, lol
I just applied for amex gold charge card via private browser for 75k offer and got the popup. I currently have 4 Amex cards 7-22 delta personal gold (75k) 9-22 platinum personal (125k) 10-22 Amazon business prime ($200) 11-22 Marriott business (125k) I put good spend on all the cards except I stopped using delta bc it sucks. I think I just need to give it more time. I didn't test if they give me the standard 60k offer, prob not.
This is interesting. I just got the platinum back in April and was planning on applying for the gold before the current promotion ends. Hopefully I get no pop up when I try. Nice to know that this occurs before you have a hard pull though.
So I want to get into the AMEX family, as I don't have any cards with them. I understand that there are no guarantees of a successful application. What would you suggest as the minimums to apply for the BCP? I'm sitting at 790 across the big 3, but only have an average age of 2 years, consisting of 3 credit cards and no installment loan history. (I drive a paid for car and live in a military barracks, so no rent or mortgage.)
They love military income, it's guaranteed stability. Also you won't have to pay annual fees on any credit card by Amex. I wish I knew the latter while I was in, go for it man.
This is so helpful to know! I was approved for the Hilton Business Card and then I got MR fever and was subsequently approved for the Gold Card and the Blue Cash Preferred within a two day period. The straw that broke the camel’s back was trying to apply for the Green Card a day later 🤦🏻♂️😆 To reframe, I think it’s kind of helpful in a way to take a step back, get those minimum spend requirements out of the way, and then assess from there. The goal is to accumulate a MR arsenal for travel next year. I have a question for you: Can AMEX lower their welcome offer after you get approved for a certain welcome offer? I got the 75k offer for the Gold Card and the $400 statement credit offer for the Blue Cash Preferred when I applied. However, when I checked MaxRewards, it had the bonuses listed as 60k and $300 respectively. I could just ask AMEX themselves but I was curious if you have heard of/encountered something like this. Your videos are great and I appreciate your content!
Congrats on all the approvals, Brandon! 😃👊 No, when you submit your application & get approved, you literally got approved for that specific offer. Amex will not reduce the bonus you got after you get an approval. MaxRewards simply doesn't know that you got an elevated / targeted offer; the standard offer is typically 60K.
I have no Amex cards, and haven't had any for 5 years or more. I don't churn or do anything suspicious. I got the pop-up applying for H Honors and again trying for Surpass. Phone reps could not tell me anything beyond the pop-up message. So frustrating. Btw, one rep even said you can get only one welcome offer within the entire family of cards. That was news to me.
1. Bizarre, not sure what's going on there. If one of their charge card products makes sense for your financial situation (Green, Gold, Platinum, Plum), then consider applying for one of those to get back into the Amex system. They tend to have easier approval requirements. 2. Getting 1 welcome offer within the family cards is not correct information. I and many others have disproven that many times over 🤙
I got popped...Green Card no welcome bonus. I had them process it anyway. Realized I didn't need it unless I move overseas, at which time it will be better just to downgrade the Gold Card. I canceled it the next day, received email confirmation. They shipped the card anyway, and I got it. But I'm not going to use it or activate it. No hard pull. Feel better!
Good that there was no hard pull. However, why did you let them process & open the account anyway? That means no bonus now...and no bonus in the future if you decide to get it later.
@@MarkReese it's wiser for me to downgrade when it makes more sense when I'm living overseas. It also sends a message to AMX. "You are not irresistible. I'm not obsessed with your points. And I'm only going to use one of your cards when it can stand on its own merits. Because to get a card just for the bonus knowing that it won't stand on its own merits, perpetuates a problem situation that you despise: people going for the bonus without the intention of really using the card as it was intended." As far as the American Express once-in-a-lifetime rule, it states that you can only be awarded a bonus for a specific card product once in a lifetime. It doesn't state that you can only TRY to get it one once. It states that you can only be AWARDED it once. It's the same with the Chase Sapphire cards. Chase confirmed that for me. I'm curious to see if AMX will, when they have a choice, take the most negative action for one of their customers with a substantial HYSA. I'm interested in long-term relationships. Let's see if they feel the same way.
When I first saw the title I started laughing and had to explain to my friend whom I was on the phone with why I started laughing and then explain what "being popped" meant lol aaaanyhow. I was thinking the reasons for your pop up jail was the recent retention offers you got. However where those were personal and this is business I'll join your mindset of that's probably a bigger factor than the personal side retention offers. Either way; who knows maybe it will end up like a CSP offer and be best one ever on next when you're out of jail. :D Have a great safe trip in TX, sir. Take care, Mark.
That was very helpful. Got popped for the CS Platinum and couldn’t figure out why. Recently changed the Everyday to the Everyday Preferred for 40k. Gonna make sure I get more spend on the cards and try again in a few months if the rate doesn’t drop below the 1.25 redemption.
In pop up jail on Hilton personal cards right now. Working on Platinum bonus so no big deal. Will finish that and wait a few months and maybe put more spend on my Hilton Amex Biz card in the mean time as I have not really used it either other than to hit bonus level which might be an issue. Maybe I can hit the $15k spend on it and get the free night bonus
I just applied for the Amex gold card and got the pop up. I’ve had the delta Amex blue card for about 3 years now, but I’ve barely used it for the past 3 months ever since I got the chase sapphire preferred card. Would you recommend using the blue card more frequently to get out of pop up jail?
Same thing happened to me with the Hilton surpass card. Back story, I got my first amex card back in February. It was the Amex gold card. I applied for the surpass card 2 weeks ago and got that pop up. Didn’t understand why so I took a risk to see if it happened to any other Hilton card and it happened to all of them. 1 week later I actually got at targeting offer in the mail for on of the Hilton cards. Didn’t understand why I kept getting those pop up but and the end I got an even better offer with the card I originally wanted
got the dreaded popup window and I think it's probably because I'm still within a 6 month welcome window on the BCP. A shame since I have quite a few travel plans for the summer. Currently considering seeing if I can break into the chase ecosystem via Hyatt's card though since I am quite fond of Hyatt hotels.
I just got popped when applying for the amex platinum card. My only other amex card had been the amex delta gold card that i downgraded to a blue years ago. Do i really need to spend on a delta card to dig my way out of this?
There's not a way for me to objectively know the exact reason(s) why you received the pop-up message, so I can't say you 'need' to do anything. The suggestions mentioned in the video are what I would do.
@@CREGGYAS - Strange indeed that it happened in that order 😂✌️ That said, Amex usually allows no more than 2 credit card approvals in a 90-day period ... although neither the Green nor the Gold are true 'credit' cards. Haha at least Pop Up Jail is a temporary thing 😁 Congrats on your two approvals!
Hey Mark! I’ve got a question for you. If I am added as an authorized user on someone’s Amex account does that mean in the future they won’t do a hard pull if I apply for one of their cards?? Also I love your videos man, you’re my favorite finance RUclipsr, excellent quality!
Yes you will get hard pulled because you’re not the account owner. But as long as the account you’re an authorized user under is in good standing, that should technically help your credit score
As another user has stated, yes you will get a hard inquiry. I started out as an authorized user also on an Amex. When I got my very own Amex there was a hard inquiry on my first Amex. There was no hard inquiry though as I applied for more Amex cards.
Hey Omar! I'm actually not sure as I don't have experience with being an AU prior to getting my 1st Amex card. But according to the data points from others, it seems like the answer is 'yes,' there will be a hard pull for your 1st-ever Amex card. // Thanks everyone! 😃💯
How many months should you wait to apply after you do the step 1,2,3? Thanks i got pop up jail when trying to apply for hilton aspire as my fifth credit card this year😁
I'm not aware of a "for sure" timeframe. Since Amex has a pop-up feature, it shouldn't be a problem to try multiple times. I'd probably make an attempt once every 3 months.
Awesome video Mark. Question. So I got my 100k platinum offer on March 15th. Already met the MSR. But similar to your business, this one has that 6 months x10 offer on gas and grocery. Do you think I should wait till that 6 month promotion period is over before I apply for my next card? It won't be till September and that's just tooooooo long of a wait. LOL Thanks for this video. So informative!
If there's another Amex card you've got your eyes on, I say go for it 💯 Since you already have an Amex card relationship, it should be a soft pull if you get an approval ... and you'd likely get the pop-up message if Amex isn't ready to give ya more yet 😁👊 A full denial, while not impossible, is probably unlikely.
Hey Mark …. So I recently did a credit line increase with one of my Amex cards. Few weeks later I decided to apply for the Platinum card. I got the pop up that I wasn’t eligible for the sign up bonus. I’m in jail even though they gave me a credit line increase on an existing card. Ever heard of such thing? What’s you opinion on that? Thanks for your content as always!
@@MarkReese Yes, bought a vehicle (4 pulls), Citi card (2 pulls), 3 Chase Cards (3 pulls), 2 Amex cards (1 pull) and insurance carrier took a hard pull. I need to lay low until August. I have heard Amex gets neurotic after 6 pulls in 12 months.
Great video! Thank you for sharing! I’ve been getting the dreaded pop up since February when I apply for the Vanilla Platinum. Been trying to get accepted for the 100k offer. I even tried the 75k on the Vanilla and also the 60k offer on the Charles Schwab Platinum just to be sure it wasn’t due to me going for the increased 100k offer. Same result. I usually try once a month just to see if I get approved. I recently got the gold in November with a 60k offer and the Blue Business Plus in January with a 25K offer. I spend regularly on all 4 of my Amex cards and have not canceled any before. Guess it’s just a matter of time.

@@MarkReese you are fun. I enjoy your vids every time. If you ever come to Clearwater, we should hangout. The point is that if I got denied after all this time, i will still have a chance to get the card in the future.
I been trying to apply for the hilton aspire card for months now and keep getting that pop up. What would happen if i apply through the hilton site/app👀🤔
I've had the Gold for 8 months then got the BBP with the 0% offer and 15k MR points after hitting the $3k spend requirement. 1 month later I applied for the personal platinum and got the pop-up. I'm guessing that since I hit the spend req in just over a month plus the 0% interest on the BBP, I'm carrying a small balance as I had a biz expense to take advantage of the 0 rate. This leads me to think these combinations got me in the Amex pokey. I spend regularly on all my Amex cards $2k min per month so I don't think it's a spending thing. I will let some time pass per you great advice and try again.
Sounds to me like getting approved for those offers in a short timeframe could have triggered the pop-up ✌Let some time pass & give it another go. Congrats on the approvals!
Hey Mark, question. I applied for amex gold today and I used a referral link. The first time it said that I will not get the sign up bonus with a pop up asking if I wanted to continue or cancel. I cancelled. I then tried again with regular browser and no referral link. I didn't get any pop up, will I get the sup still?

Hey man - it’s possible, but I’d personally go another 3 months of building credit before applying. You’re off to a fantastic start, but a 3-month history is very young 👍
Hey Brett - I'm a bit confused, is that related to the topic of the video? Or a totally separate question? What is it that you're trying to understand?

Hey Mark! I’ve got a question for you. If I am added as an authorized user on someone’s Amex account does that mean in the future they won’t do a hard pull if I apply for one of their cards?? Also I love your videos man, you’re my favorite finance RUclipsr, excellent quality!
Great question. Was thinking the same because I want to add my wife.
@@jordan23ww thx for the data points
Hey Omar! I'm actually not sure as I don't have experience with being an AU prior to getting my 1st Amex card. But according to the data points from others, it seems like the answer is 'yes,' there will be a hard pull for your 1st-ever Amex card. // Thanks everyone! 😃💯
Thank you so much ...I will keep this info...I love my amex Cards ....Awesome Video !!
Glad you enjoyed the video! 💯
I actually been through this not long ago I had to wait a few months before I got my gold card
It happens 😆 Glad ya made it through!
Haven't gotten popped yet, but seriously thinking of applying for more. Just don't know which one to get. Love the video.
Did ya complete the welcome bonus spend for the Amex Biz Plat + the Delta Reserve? 😃✈️

I haven't heard of that, and I don't have a way of knowing if it was a direct result of requesting a CLI.
I got popped. My best guess still a small amount to go on my gold card 90k offer. Only got the car 2mo. ago.
😬
@@MarkReese I’m hoping by putting all my spend on the gold, that in 3-6 months I’ll be released lol
I literally got the amex popup yesterday are you reading my mind
The RUclips algorithm is taking over Amex
😂👌
I got it yesterday too!
Too many hard inquiries in 12 months. I got popped having 11.
Did you get some good approvals along the way? 😃💳

Ok this makes me not want the amex card who the f lets them tell you where how you spend money WTF?!?#
It's an anti-gaming measure. Not related to how / where you spend your money ✌

I got the gold card in January and use it all the time and today I applied for the Hilton honors card and I got popped. I’ve never had the Hilton card before so idk why I’m getting this message 😢
Amex & their secret reasons 😂✌ Give it some time, follow the steps in the video, and try again later.
@@MarkReese ok I called Amex and they couldn’t give me an answer of why I got the pop up. I reapplied again with my friends referral link and got the same thing. So I gave it another try right after by just applying without the referral and it worked! 💪🏼
@@petersandoval1138 - Hahaha of course! 😂👊 Congrats on the approval, Peter!
I had that pop up jail. I submitted and got denied instantly. Haha. Reason because I recently got approved for the Platinum and Gold card within 2 months.
Bummer 😆 Clearly Amex doesn't want us getting all the cards all the time 😂
@@MarkReese you are fun.

It should be the same result, the application is still processed by American Express 😬 Hilton isn't involved with credit decisions.

How long did you stay in pop up jail
Thanks

Great Info!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Louis - as long as no pop-up appeared, you should be eligible for the bonus. I'd chat with Amex to confirm the offer is on your account.
@@MarkReese thank you. I contacted Amex agent and my sup is good to
go.
No room Tour ??? I got a chase pre approval in the mail what’s the odds of getting approved
If you're pre-approved its borderline guaranteed you'll get it unless something in your report has changed since you got pre-approved
No room tour 😁✌️ Can't say what the odds of approval are with a pre-approved mailer, but at least it sounds good 😁👌

I’ve got good credit, 705 transunion, 699 equifax, pretty much have had my credit profile for a good 3 months, recently started In march after my birthday, would like to hear back from you, thanks :)
Hey man - it’s possible, but I’d personally go another 3 months of building credit before applying. You’re off to a fantastic start, but a 3-month history is very young 👍
Ok thanks so much for the input, I’ll wait a little bit longer :)

What about if you have an Amex platinum card and you only use it for statement credits so pretty much everything they give me is for free
Hey Brett - I'm a bit confused, is that related to the topic of the video? Or a totally separate question? What is it that you're trying to understand?
@@MarkReese I have the AmEx platinum card but the only thing I put on it is the things I get a statement credit for so the card isn't really costing me anything but then again they're not making any money off me I'm just thankful I got the card with a $40,000 gross income that's before all vehicle expenses I am a driver for Uber but they asked for gross income so I gave them what my gross was
Every now and again I might put $1,000 charge on it I think in 2021 I only put $6,000 on the card in 12 months which I usually pay the card off as soon as I buy something with it I pay it the next day
