  • Rite Aid - the third largest drugstore chain in the country with over 1,700 retail stores across 16 states - disclosed that they had been the victim of a cyberattack.
An intrusion was detected on their internal systems in June, which lead to a data breach involving customer information being compromised.
Rite Aid initially did not provide many details about the incident, but it has since been confirmed that the attackers were in fact the ransomware group called RansomHub. This cybercriminal gang had claimed responsibility for breaching Rite Aid's network on their dark web leak site, saying they had stolen over 10GB of customer data containing information of around 45 million individuals.
Some of the personal details RansomHub publicly claimed to have access to and threatened to leak included names, home addresses, dates of birth, driver's license ID numbers, Rite Aid rewards account numbers. To prove they had indeed infiltrated Rite Aid, the hackers even published a screenshot of a sample of the data they stole.
RansomHub attempted to extort Rite Aid, demanding a ransom payment in exchange for not disclosing or selling the massive trove of private customer information they pilfered. However, when negotiations apparently broke down, the gang added Rite Aid to their public leak site and said they would start releasing the stolen files in two weeks unless their bitcoin ransom was paid.
