  • Many of us have seen mysterious "TCP/IP options" in our network settings, but what is TCP/IP, and how does it enable the Internet to operate as it does?

    Correction:
    SMTP is not used to check email. SMTP is ONLY used for the purpose of sending and receiving email messages to and from a server.
    The protocols you would use to *check* your email are POP (Post office protocol) or IMAP (internet message access protocol)

    • @unvergebeneid
      @unvergebeneid 8 лет назад +24

      The "receiving" in your statement is still confusing IHMO but yeah, I was going to say this: from an end-user perspective, SMTP is used to send emails, period. It's also used between mail servers. Receiving is done with IMAP or POP3 if you're on a 90s retro trip.

    • @ubertom3011
      @ubertom3011 8 лет назад

      i still use pop, maybe that makes me retro but i think the fact i still use a seperate email client as opposed to a web based dealio makes me far more passé than any protocol ever could.

    • @unvergebeneid
      @unvergebeneid 8 лет назад

      Tom Johnston Nah, I hate web-based dealios. OTOH, POP3 is just impractical as soon as you're using more than one machine to check your mails.

      That is why IMAP became a thing, that way it stays on the server and just syncs it to your email client.

    Actually, low-numbered ports like http (tcp/80) and smtp (tcp/25) are _destination_ ports. They don't describe where things are coming from. For that we have _source_ ports, which tend to change from connection to connection.

    Application layer 7 (allows for communication to programs)
    Presentation layer 6 (formats)
    Session layer 5 (NetBIOS)
    Transport layer 4 (TCP / UDP) Segments
    Network layer 3 (internet / IP) Packets

    Could you make a video on UDP as well, coz I kinda remember that one of my friends in college once told me to only use UDP & not TCP ports & proxy from OpenVPN

    The little under your breathe "Damn it Taran" seemed so legit, thought you were legitimately just tired of him for a second there.

    Linus can explain concepts in less than 8 minutes while my professor explain half of it in 90 minutes

    Just my humble opinion, but I think that jokes shouldn't bring the flow to a jarring halt. I appreciated the packet jokes, but they really broke the flow of the video.

      No, Linus is just a serial killer. Those aren't jokes.

      I too think the videos would be better without cheap unfunny jokes and stupid sounds and animations.
