A hidden gem in Wanaka | Breast Hill Track, New Zealand

  • A strong contender for the best hike in the Wanaka region! The Breast Hill Track can be found on the shores of Lake Hawea in the Hawea Conservation Park, about 20-25 minutes from Wanaka. From the Dingle Burn Road to Pakituhi Hut the track climbs a vertical 950m, with the first kilometre of track zig-zagging for 400 vertical metres before reaching a small saddle. Pakituhi Hut sits at ~1300m elevation and is located roughly 4.2km from Dingle Burn Road. From Pakituhi Hut it is a further 2.5 km and ~320m to the Breast Hill Summit. This isn’t a walk for the faint hearted, however the views over Lake Hawea and the Southern Alps make this one quite magical!
    If you don't want to hike the whole trail, you get fantastic views at multiple points along the track. Hike up as far as you are comfortable, enjoy the views and then head back down :)
    Date Hiked: September 2022
    Distance: ~15.3 km return
    Duration: 7+ hours

    Beautiful video of a beautiful hike. I was confused about the snow until I saw you hiked this in September. We just spent 9 days in Wanaka in December, and I wish we could spend more time there. I discovered your channel when I got back home from New Zealand, and I love it! Keep up the good work!

      We miss Wanaka so much 😭
      After being there for about a year we left in November, spent 2 months going up the West Coast and now we're in Nelson for the next 5 months. As beautiful as those places have been, Wanaka just holds a special place in our heart!
      Thanks for watching and thanks for the support! ❤️🙏

    I remember I looked on a topo & thought it's easy after the 1st zigzags....
    Water tank was empty, but lucky still some snow around the hut to melt.

    Hey guys, as always love the content. Was actually thinking it would be awesome to see you guys do a video on your top 5 NZ hikes and even ranking some of the more well known hikes to help out international travellers (like me) to choose their first few hikes!

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  Год назад +2

      Thanks MrMatena! Definitely agree with you on this type of video and it's definitely something we'd like to make. We'd prefer to wait till we have finished our hiking this summer/autumn around the Nelson/Tasman area, so we have a better gauge of what's available in the northern section of the South Island.
      Happy to give you some recommendations of what we have done though! What areas are you planning on visiting?

      @@ChrisandDanya thanks for the reply guys! I’m doing a March trip to the South Island for 7 days and I’m weighing up the Milford Trail which I want to do but it will take a lot of time (4 days) as opposed to doing a few smaller hikes such as The Routeburn and Earnslaw Burn.
      Basically trying to work out how to allocate only 7 days to so many options of hikes!

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  Год назад +2

      I'd say for 7 days, maybe skip the Mildford Track because getting there and back takes quite a bit of time as well; you may even had a hard time getting space on the track because it books out so fast.
      Routeburn is great too, but same thing, you may have a hard time getting a spot; although if you are solo, spots do appear pretty often. If you do decide to do the Routeburn, you can combine the first 2.5 days of the Routeburn and link it with 1.5 days on Greenstone or Caples track. This will make it 4 days, but it creates a loop back to your car or transport in Glenorchy
      Earnslaw Burn is good, but it can be quite a difficult hike, but it's very beautiful especially in summer.
      Mt Cook is always a great option, Wanaka has some great overnighters too

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  Год назад

      This one is very steep, but the beginning is switch backs so makes it a bit easier. You could just hike as far up as you like and then turn around. You get great views very quickly

      Our favourite day hikes we've done on the South Island are below (in no particular order):
      - Hooker Valley Track (Mt Cook)
      - Sealy Tarns (Mt Cook)
      - Rob Roy Glacier (Wanaka)
      - Rocky Mountain Track (Wanaka)
      - Isthmus Peak and/or Rob Roy (Wanaka)
      - Breast Hill (Wanaka) (Don't need to go the whole way if it's too difficult)
      - Moonlight Track/Ben Lomond (Queenstown)
      - Earnslaw Burn, but I'd prefer to do this as an overnight (Glenorchy)
      - Lake Matheson (Fox Glacier)
      - Hokatika Gorge (Hokatika)
      Bonus:
      - Could do a day hike on the Kepler Track to Luxmore Hut (Te Anau)
      - Could do a day hike on the Routeburn Track to Routeburn Flats Hut (Glenorchy)
      - Could do a day hike on the Paparora Track (Greymouth)
