Wow, Kris, thank you, really an eye opener, never really thought of boosting signal (other than aiming for saturated tone) by stacking another boost or overdrive pedal in front of our favorite or most-used OD or Dist pedal.

JCM800 and Plexi are my favourite pedal platforms, really good for stacking drive pedals (especially plexi). I'm curious how the new Blackstar Amp 1 behaves with different pedals as it's designed to take "everything". Also Drive pedals>EQ>amp is an interesting approach.

Hey Kris! Great video again! My main gain pedals are Marshally amp-in-a-box types of which I have tried 4 in the last few years. First was the JHS "THe AT" (Andy Timmons signature Angry Charlie which is JCM-800 type I believe). It sounded great in my "red knobs" Twin (very high headroom and LOUD but not especially scooped for a Fender) as well as in my Revv Dynamis 7-40. I now use the actual Angry Charlie with the 3 knobs EQ in the Dynamis and it also sounds great.
Recently I wanted a pedal that would sound similar to the Dynamis Red channel as I needed to use the amp as a pure pedal platform in some circumstances so, after discussing it with Sam at Revv, I got the Revv G4. It sounds even better than the JHS and feels even more amp-like. My other drive is the Wampler Tumnus Deluxe which I use for my crunch tone mostly and it too sounds great in the DYnamis..
But before getting the regular Angry Charlie, I had purchased the Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe as it sounded great in all demos of it I heard. I could NOT get it to work for me. The EQ is so radical I had about a 1/10th of a turn on the Treble knob that was usable on the pedal. I couldn't try it in my red knobs Twin as that amp is out of commission for the time being (it needs repairs). The Pinnacle didn't sound any better in my MKII Katana head which I had been using after the Twin died and before I got my Dynamis. In the same cab, it had the exact same issue. The Katana dirt channels all sound great in my Marshall 4x12 cab (2 x V30s + 2 x H75 Creambacks in X pattern).
So it really depends on the drive pedal. Both JHS AT/AC and the Revv G4 and the Tumnus De;luxe sound amazing in my Dynamis through the same 4x12 and the Revv 1x12 with a H75 Creamback I got recently for smaller venues. I kmow the JHS AT sounded great in my Twin so I'M sure the ANgry Charlie and G4 would sound great in it too. Same for the Tumnus. But the PInnacle is absolutely unusable for me.
I have a few other distortion/overdrive pedal models in my HX Effects and most are at least usable in my Dynamis and some sound great (even the DS-1!) but some do not (anything Rat based which I dislike to begin with to be honest). The OCD model in the HX sounds really good. Really have a heard time getting a usable sound out of its KOT/POT models though. The TS and Klon models are fine.
A lot of it is a matter of taste of course but my struggling to get a usable sound out of the Pinnacle Deluxe was real and I loved that pedal in demos. Sp I was surprised I wasn't able to get it to work for me. It's another MIAB type pedal so I expected it to work well in my Dynamis. Have you tried that pedal?
    Thanks Kris!

The Suhr Bella is one of the best amp for pedal (or preamp pedal) I ever tried. Pity you not notify the bright switch (or presence) on amp is most of the time the key to have the best sound possible. Modern pedal have presence or voicing to get the best sound but it's a very important setting in the most of time. I don't know what you think about it but I preferred a very clean bright sound and setting the overdrive darker than the opposite.
Great idea your video ! Thx Kris ! Love

  • @TheFeatalion

Thanks for the video, Kris! I have a Blackstar amp that have 2 clean channels and every channel takes overdrive/fuzz pedals radically different. And for pedals that do not have tone control knobs or eq it is hard or sometimes impossible to pair it with the Fender-style channel, but less problematic with Marshal-style. Sometimes a tone that I don't like on its own sits in a mix very well, so, unless one plays in isolation all the time, I would suggest to keep experimenting!

The way pedals respond to other pedals or the preamp is just as important to me as the sound of the pedal itself. I run a gain fxxker ii as a crunch pedal (it’s kind of like a higher gain crunch/dist with a lot of presence, it makes a gibson sound like a strat) and a leqtique 11/11 stacked for leads. they’re both ostensibly metal pedals, but the crunch tones on them are killer!
If you wanna play math rock, the gain fxxker ii is literally the best pedal imo.

I’ve been very happy with my fender champion 100. I use the 1st channel as a mute and channel 2 is to set to the Jazz model with the gain set between 2-3, treble and bass around 4 and the mids dimed . It gets a bright high headroom ultra clean.
I run a NUX horsemen ( Klon Klon) with the gain very low as a clean boost then into a sweet baby low gain od for just past the edge of break up and a REVV G3 or a Boss MT-2 for high gain.
Occasionally I’ll run the Sunn 412 but mostly just the stock 12’s in the combo.
    I love my tone

I have the Highes and Kettner Tubemeister 18, but only use the clean channel. It's so clean and use the TC Novadrive-the OD side is on almost all the time-settings all at 12 o'clock and a very under-rated dual OD/distortion pedal in my opinion. But just got the Nobel ODR Mini, love it, and have the Wampler Dual Fusion and the AleksK Honeymoon 2 also. All fantastic pedals

Such a great video! It's taken me a while to figure out all that stuff you're talking about. But, absolutely true words... pedals get along with different amps, and even if you're using an amp as a pedal platform, finding the sweet spot (edge of break up, probably) really helps pedals sound more natural. As stated, you really gotta try stuff out. Also, people don't realize how much volume or lack thereof plays into the auditory equation.

Pedals with great dynamic response and great clean up, I usually crank the gain pretty high.
I use the Toxic Twins with the BB side on hard-clipping and the gain pretty high and adjust the "saturation" with the volume of my strat.
It's a great way to reduce "tap dancing", but you know that!
Can't thank you enough for introducing me to this pedal.

I hate to say it because a lot of people do really love it, but I didn’t like the Boss DS-1. I got it because I saw a bunch of videos online recently raving about how underrated and hated it is, and I’m sure there’s usable sounds, but with my rig it just didn’t work. I also had less experience experimenting with pedals at that point so I traded it towards something else. However, now I have a Walrus Audio Eras Distortion, a Walrus Audio Warhorn Combo Overdrive, and a NUX Horseman (Klon clone) and between those three, I can get every flavor of overdrive that I really want. I’m very excited because I just got a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe as an early Christmas present, and I CAN’T WAIT to try it with my overdrives to see which one I like best. Right now I’ve been playing my blues junior, which seems to really like the Horseman the best.

I bought the Friedman Small Box Pedal after watching Pete Thorns demo. I had a Victory V40 amp at the time, so a clean “pedal platform” amp. Should have sounded great in theory but it was awful. The amp is too clean and it just sounded thin and buzzy. Nothing like Pete’s sound at all. I had both the amp and pedal up for sale. I ended up selling the Victory but couldn’t shift the pedal. A while later I acquired a Friedman mini Dirty Shirley amp and tried the pedal with it. Mind was totally blown! It was completely different. The sound I had originally wanted. Tight but fat and huge sounding with a percussive attack and good amount of gain. Just couldn’t believe how different it sounded. For me the Friedman mini DS is my perfect pedal platform amp. On the edge of breakup and fat sounding. The amp makes all the difference with pedals

Humbuckers can be a little dark but with the Vox with it's very bright sound, it's a good pairing. pedals I keep coming back to are a 'carl martin hot drive'n''boost' and a 'dirty little secret' clone. nice crunch but still articulate. I find Klons a little muddy sounding but that might be me not dialling in properly.

I have a Splawn 2020 model and I swear they made pretty difficult to use with pedals. Like I asked the owner of Splawn what pedals he likes to use with a Splawn. Scott’s reply was, you don’t need one lol. I mean the amp really doesn’t but so far out of all my pedals I have narrowed it down to a walrus audio EB-10 EQ pedal that has a boost on it… that kicks that amp pretty good. Better than any of my OD pedals which I have many.. Maxon, Boss, MXR, earthquaker, etc…. On the other hand I have one of the Mini JCM800 Studio heads and the Boss and MxR custom bad ass really play well with that head. What’s weird is, the Splawn is supposedly a 800 on roids(def has more gain in all 3 of the gears, but it doesn’t like pedals like the Marshall does.

I use the Line 6 Catalyst as my main amp. The clean channel is phenomenal as a pedal platform. I haven't had any pedals sound bad through it. Currently I have the Revv G2, G3, G4, MXR Sugar Drive and Wampler Moxie. The amp really let's the voice of the pedal come through.

I would rate a good boost or preamp pedal more important than overdrives. Would even rate an EQ pedal higher and more relevant for your tone than overdrives. So invest in those before you put money into any overdrives. Better safe your money for an above average (tube) amp. We are oversupplied by overdrive pedals because of low entry barriers due to simple circuits, cheap parts and attractive margins. RUclips (JHS, Wampler etc.) does its thing telling you that you can‘t live without them.

Fender Blues Deville + Empress Heavy + Les Paul Traditional = Not as expected (to the worst). Probably traces back to double-scooped-mids idea..

Maybe the solution for the amp problem is just to use two different amps in dual mono or stereo!? 🤔

That is always the solution. 😂 Two amps do magic to your tone. 🙌

I have to disagree. Max gain is the only way to use an overdrive.
Distortion doesn't need to be maxed, of course.

1:22 It could be funny, if another video came in, from left, You in 2008's and say the opposite No Kris, crank up the overdrive's gain to the max. It's completely ok! Hahaha :). Jk...

😆😆 I should’ve done that. „Hey, old man, shut it and crank that gain“.
Btw even back then I used less gain than 10 years before that, haha!

I buy an overdrive pedal based solely on the color…if I like the color I use it…but I’m an idiot 😳

Haha, you're very far from being an idiot. I have a very hard time falling in love with a pedal that sounds great but doesn't look "right". Is this unreasonable? I believe so. But are we human beings instead of computers that purely follow logic? Hellsyeah. 😅
