    Wow! That explains why I never get many eggplants on my plant - I’m waiting too long to harvest them. Thanks! I’ll have to pick them when they’re smaller, instead of waiting, and waiting, and waiting, hoping they’ll grow bigger.

    Jag thanks for your excellent advice. I'm zone 9B, Fresno/Clovis area, so your advice is always spot on for me. I agree, Black Beauty and Japanese are what I usually plant when I plant. We love grilling them.

    even though i don't much care for eggplants, nor plan on growing them, i still like to see how you approach growing things.

    Great video, Jag. Loved the addition of adding starting dates to each zone. Very helpful. I grow eggplants ironically, I hate them, but donate produce to local soup kitchen. I plant more as trap crop for flea beatles, but they still produce.

    I'm in zone 8, and just don't get that kind of heat. I'm lucky if my eggplants get 1-3 fruit in their entire life span. I think in order for them to be prolific, like in the video, you need pretty hot summers. ...but I keep trying. :-) Impressive Harvest in the video! Congrats! The eggplants sure like what you are doing. :-)

    I live in 8b in Texas and the heat killed my eggplant. Multiple 110+ days. Even in shade. The few I got were small and bitter.

      I'm in central Texas, and secret here is to mulch heavily, particularly when temperatures are consistently in the 90s and 100s. I have limited space, so my eggplant is interplanted with flowers and herbs, which helps with keeping roots shaded. My eggplant produce all summer and fall, even sometimes into the winter until we get a freeze. Ping Tung Long is never bitter and does great in the heat. Also a heavy producer! Always pick eggplant when the skin is still glossy, too.

    When plant is done producing, goes to seed; do you pull it out of ground & compost or leave it for next season?

    • @DaisyCreekFarms
      @DaisyCreekFarms  9 месяцев назад +1

      Cut at stem level, leave roots in the ground and compost the rest.

      Did you do all the things Jag recommended? Full sun, rich soil, adequate water, pick often? Were you in ground or container? Everything is even more critical if in a container. I'm 9B. If I get things half right I get a good harvest but never quite as prolific as that plant.

      Baba Ganoush, mousakka or split and grilled. I also thinly slice it lengthwise and layer it into lasagna. My partner grew up with slices of the Black Beauty baked with a topping of marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. She called it pizza plant. Or caponata. Yum! Just two of us, we are already daydreaming about this year's eggplant harvest. Just don't over plant. I usually do 2 Black Beauty and two of the Japanese. One each would be enough, two is for insurance.
