what a legend. doesn't even change out of his pajamas to go to a show where he shreds like an alien, and changes his amp settings in the middle of the show, still shredding. and all of it was for jimi. my respect is unmeasurable
This song has so much soul, energy and aggression to it, u gotta dig deep to pull it off. I don't think people realise how good John is, he really is a master guitarist.
This song has always been amazing to watch people play live. The way it feels like they are just trying their hardest to fit as many complex blues licks they can in between every motif feels more like a game than simply playing an instrument. Musical cramming. Not to mention the way it feels like he has to catch the motif lick before it escapes his guitar. It's sonically spectacular
its not that good. The original is light years ahead. The solos are weak, and the rhythm is pretty weak too. But its good enough to fool people who don't know
I honestly don't get why this comment section is full of grown men putting young girls down by saying that they don't understand or know classic rock music. Sure, there are girls like that - but to generalise every girl as a 'pop fan' and every boyfriend as a rock lover is a bit much. Even if many got introduced to classic rock by listening first to his pop, they at least did learn of it. At 14-15, all of my friends and I were hugely into rock music of the 60s-80s, and took immediately to John's virtuoso playing.
When Mayer was on the Rolling Stone cover years ago with Trucks and Frusciante, I laughed to myself. Now I begrudgingly accept that Mr. Wonderland is a tremendously gifted guitar player and totally deserved to be on that cover.
I just started listening to John. Also i was living under a rock. I loved this soo much. He also seems to be a super cool, lovely and wise dude in interviews. I was always more drawn to less popular musicians because i'm a snob sort of. Forgetting that someone can be popular 'just' because they are amazingly great musicians. It's truly a joy to find more and more contemporary artists with this elegance, feel and love for music and life.
Hated this dude growing up in early 2000s til I heard neon a few years after he blew up and was like "wow that guitar riff is like impossible to figure out" then realized he is an absolute savage as a blues guitarist. And appealed to the mainstream audience. Can't lie. Lot of respect for this guy in my adulthood.
Hendrix’s Voodoo Child is one of my favorite songs of all time. Maybe this isn’t quite Jimi but I am shocked at how good it is. I am totally a John Meyer fan now.
Imagine being there, seeing all those 9 to 16 y.o. girls that don't know WTF is this and just watching disappointed the good old john playing his favourite, while their dads are singing along with the soul of 🅱ig 🅱oy Jimi Hendrix and having a good time after all that "Pop Rock" and girl things. In poor words, i wish i was there
There are four you could argue for or against IMO: Trucks, Bonamassa, Frusciante or Mayer. They are each WILDLY different though. Slide, straight blues(-rockish), blues-pop and straight rock.
I remember when he opened the show with this. I was blown away. This was one amazing concert. I love you John!!! Get well. I am going through withdrawls!!! This was the last concert I saw you at.
this was the video that made me discover john mayer. i was in a hendrix/srv phase already, and hadn't heard any covers as accurate as this one. the moment i heard him play, i went "who IS this guy?". little did i know, from that moment on, *his* music would change my outlook on music forever.

Whether or not you’re a John Mayer fan, this is an awesome testament to his talent. I was looking forward to hearing his version of this classic. It doesn’t need to be compared to anyone.
Unfortunately he's too handsome to be taken seriously playing tunes like this - most of the audience (girls with hearts in their eyes) have no clue what what he's playing here
RobX- the only people who care what he looks like are the pre-teen girls in the audience. It is clear from many of the comments here that many of us do take him seriously.
Meanwhile, 1 hour prior at Soundcheck.. JM: “I want to play differently tonight. I don’t know, maybe Hendrix...” [soundchecks Voodoo Child] Tiffany, Rock Stylist: “cute. Let’s stick with the golf outfit. Also please play Daughters right now.” [soundchecks Daughters]
you can tell how excited he is to play like this, he doesn't get a chance to that often while live. Every time he's singing you can just tell he can't wait to get back to soloing over this lmao. He is doing exactly what he wants on that guitar
Ok. I'm like a lot of ppl here that never gave John Mayer a second thought. This was impressive and having seen a couple other videos of him jamming, i've gained respect for this dude. A real musician.
One of the best voodoo child covers I’ve ever heard. Most of them just sound too messy but John nails every lick and perfectly combines Jimi and srv licks.
I never knew before that Mayer also did this one. This is a standard for me, and one of the Hendrix masterpieces. Stevie Ray Vaughan did a great rendition, and now, add John Mayer to the list!
Hate when i tell people that I like John Mayer and they assume it’s because Body is a Wonderland is my favorite song. Nah, it’s because the dude absolutely shreds and makes incredible music
What's crazy is he's one of the greatest guitarists ever, but most know him for his top 40 hits. Saw him live, it was very impressive, but I'm a huge Hendrix fan so I always appreciate the talent.
Gotta admit: That was probably the best VCSR cover I've ever heard. He really had something to say. Don't know why he gets so much hate, the man can play.

Amazing. Some 55 years later and this tune is still juicy delicious meat for a competent guitarist to truly express himself. Thank you Jimi and God Bless you Mr. Mayer for honoring our brother Jimi
what a legend. doesn't even change out of his pajamas to go to a show where he shreds like an alien, and changes his amp settings in the middle of the show, still shredding. and all of it was for jimi. my respect is unmeasurable
Not only is he technically amazing, but he plays with a lot of feeling, and it’s brilliant
This song has so much soul, energy and aggression to it, u gotta dig deep to pull it off. I don't think people realise how good John is, he really is a master guitarist.
It's easy to hate him! But after seeing this performance I'm sold, what a guitar player!
I think it's safe to say Mayer is not completely bitch made.
This is pure witch craft guitar playing , unreal
Yea the songs simple, but the man is man handling it in his own way
Drew Zaio like to see you try...
You should see Hendrix when he's live
@Drew Zaio: Well I tried the wah wah this morning, and it won't do all the crazy licks, must be broken or something...
Not witchcraft...it's voodoo
This song has always been amazing to watch people play live. The way it feels like they are just trying their hardest to fit as many complex blues licks they can in between every motif feels more like a game than simply playing an instrument. Musical cramming. Not to mention the way it feels like he has to catch the motif lick before it escapes his guitar. It's sonically spectacular
excellent comment, well put
I'm a simple man, when John Mayer cover Jimi Hendrix, I click LIKE.
Drummer plays, using the "traditional" grip. Badass!
he is a monster here
monster?!
He is a monster guitar player

This version of Bold As Love aint bad either!
its not that good. The original is light years ahead. The solos are weak, and the rhythm is pretty weak too. But its good enough to fool people who don't know

I went to high school with the guy on the drums..Keith Carlock..one of the best drummers on the planet.
The one time him being conventionally attractive was a problem lol.
Most people in the audience had no idea what they were listening to
pretty cool that he threw in the walking line from Hey Joe in there too
3:55 *girls expecting to hear your body is wonderland and daughters*: “mom can you pick me up I’m scared”
That's funny!!! Love it
I just started listening to John.
Can't lie. Lot of respect for this guy in my adulthood.
arguably the greatest guitarist of his generation
Samuel Padua there are much better players
name some...
Synyster Gates
zach webster nah
Mark Tremonti
Tough to pull off with that outfit on.
Doug Shanahan hahahaha
Even better. 😂
I was thinking the same thing,
His out seems tame compared to Jimi and Stevie's.
But he definitely did it lol...
Hendrix’s Voodoo Child is one of my favorite songs of all time. Maybe this isn’t quite Jimi but I am shocked at how good it is. I am totally a John Meyer fan now.
Until this day I did not know how awesome a guitarist Mayer is. Wow jus WOW!!!!!!!!
いやーほんとすごいわ。ギターヒーローですあなたは
John Mayer should make a Rock album
He honestly should, he's got the talent. It would be a nice change from all the poppy bullshit
Listen to the John Mayer Trio
Yeah I’d kill for a heavy rock album by Mayer
@@OmegaMarioMaster poppy bullshit is what sells nowadays sadly. he still should tho as just a passion project id definitely listen to it
He's been in Dead and Co since 2015. Where have you been?
One of the most underrated guitarists ever.

OK John Mayer...I see you
TheSocratesReborn he doesn't get as much creditas he should for his skill from most because he is commercial successful as a pop artist
Dude was fearless back then! My gaawd! Love his Hendrix/SRV covers.
Love how John feels music & how enjoys every note coming out of the guitar, just fabulous.
I'm speechless ...that solo around the 3 minute mark made me love this song even more
John Mayer is a great guitarist!! Underrated for sure!
Imagine being there, seeing all those 9 to 16 y.o. girls that don't know WTF is this and just watching disappointed the good old john playing his favourite, while their dads are singing along
with the soul of 🅱ig 🅱oy Jimi Hendrix and having a good time after all that "Pop Rock" and girl things.
In poor words, i wish i was there
😂
Jimmy is up in heaven looking down at this performance... loading 22 tabs into his headband and 3 under each eyelid as a nod to a great performance..
Best guitar player in the last 30 years.
...dude lol.

@@huelerhuelin3334 you don’t have a picture. Must break every camera in sight.
I had no idea he could play guitar like that, that sounded great
tyler borders hi would love to know what you think of my 17 year old grandsons acoustic attempt at this. Hoping to find him some subscribers 😜 ruclips.net/video/xC2hcwXot-k/видео.html
He is one of maybe the best guitarist of this century so far. He just doesn’t do it on his albums which is a shame. You should listen to where the light is, he does many blues songs on it
This is the first video that any JM fan should watch - just to grasp what a truly incredible guitarist he is.
He don't know how good he are - Eric Clapton talks about John Mayer
Whether or not you’re a John Mayer fan, this is an awesome testament to his talent. I was looking forward to hearing his version of this classic. It doesn’t need to be compared to anyone.
Unfortunately he's too handsome to be taken seriously playing tunes like this - most of the audience (girls with hearts in their eyes) have no clue what what he's playing here
A friend told me once “if you’re not good looking, play guitar, if you are good looking, nobody gives a fuck about anything else.”
A random shot that’s not what I said
Taken seriously? He’s one of the best blues guitar players on earth!
But yes, I agree about his audience lol.
A random shot thats a good point lol
RobX- the only people who care what he looks like are the pre-teen girls in the audience. It is clear from many of the comments here that many of us do take him seriously.
Meanwhile, 1 hour prior at Soundcheck..
JM: “I want to play differently tonight. I don’t know, maybe Hendrix...”
[soundchecks Voodoo Child]
Tiffany, Rock Stylist: “cute. Let’s stick with the golf outfit. Also please play Daughters right now.”
[soundchecks Daughters]
you can tell how excited he is to play like this, he doesn't get a chance to that often while live.
I respect Mayer. Not for his songs but the covers. It’s like he’s trying to bring back good music!
He hit us with a few licks from ‘hey joe’ at 2:00
Now I wish we could see Hendrix take a stab at one one of John Mayers tunes
Neon
mmafan2223 he could have killed waiting on the world to change or gravity
@@SirLancelotTheBrave slow dancing or covered in rain with jimi hendrix on it, solo part is probably gonna be godly
Just look at all along the watchtower
the joy in his face puts a smile on mine
One of the best voodoo child covers I’ve ever heard. Most of them just sound too messy but John nails every lick and perfectly combines Jimi and srv licks.
Anyone notice all the best guitar players are tall with pretty big hands? Dang. Puts me at an immediate disadvantage lol
SeemsLikeSomething Stevie Ray Vaughan was 5’5
Trident Editing
Ok. I’m sure it’s not a strict rule. Just saying most are tall.
SeemsLikeSomething I know. I’m just playin brotha
Large hands makes access to the top end of the finger board much easier.
Get a smaller guitar if you need to dude, my hands aren't massive but it's just practise man
The way he made the guitar match his voice is insane
I never knew before that Mayer also did this one. This is a standard for me, and one of the Hendrix masterpieces. Stevie Ray Vaughan did a great rendition, and now, add John Mayer to the list!
Look up Gary Moore’s version, one of the best !!!
Gotta love John Mayer. He's playing a $10,000.00 strat with a $7.99 nylon strap.
How is that crazy? By definition way more people listen to top 40 hits. How would not more people know him for them?
A good cover of a awesome cover of a god's song
Gotta admit: That was probably the best VCSR cover I've ever heard. He really had something to say. Don't know why he gets so much hate, the man can play.
John is something else good lord
its awesome the way he mixes voodoo child and hey joe's riff sometimes, John Mayer rocks!
i always thought why the guitars looks small on John then i googled his height. Damn this man hit them good genetics
2:36 I bet that photographer got an amazing picture with John Mayer in mid guitar solo with the audience behind him
Kids this is what you call a fender stratocaster its an ancient device that makes music its made of wood iron copper wires and a little plastic there's no screen mouse or keypad on this it gets better the more you use it
If I could go to a John Mayer`s concert, I would never be the kind of girl with hearts in the eyes. I`m not a girl, I`m a grown old woman, and I would be there expecting to listening to his astonishing music, paying all the respect Mr. Mayer and his band mates deserve.
Find myself returning for Carlock’s driving pumping beat, better than most
Man, apparently I need to go to a John Mayer concert.
Can we talk about the fact that the drummer played this song perfect? Is not a ez song in drums, Mitch Mitchell was a genious.
Keith Carlock.. he's been around.
both songs appear on Electric Ladyland .
track 4 Voodoo Chile is a more straightforward blues 15 mins long
track 15 Voodoo Chile ( slight return) is the 5:13 variation on the theme we all know and love and do cover versions of
Andy Hamlett would've been cooler if Voodoo Chile was track 5 so there would be this interesting reverse in numbers.
Was not expecting to land on this. But glad I did. I have always respected his guitar playing, but this just makes me respect him. Well done. I can play this song and need to do more of it. If you are reading this break out that guitar.
half of the audience have no idea what pure genius they have just listened to
