In my opinion the very best song of the entire opera. Saw it during the first seson of opera proms in 1978/9 at Covent Garden. £1 to sit on the stripped out stalls floor. They sang four encores of this scene.

    Using google translate ...
Eh bien! Vite, quelles nouvelles? Well! Quick, what news?
Pas trop mauvaises, les nouvelles. Not too bad, the news.
Nous pouvons encor faire quelques beaux coups.
We can still make some nice moves.
Mais nous avons besoin de vous. But we need you.
Nous avons en tete une affaire. We have a business in mind.
Est-elle bonne, dites-nous? Is it good, tell us?
Elle est admirable, ma chere, She is admirable, my dear,
Mais nous avons besoin de vous. But we need you.
Car nous l'avouons humblement, Because we humbly admit it,
et fort respectueresement. and very respectfully.
    Oui, nos l'avouons humblement.
Quand il s'agit de tromperie, When it comes to deception,
de duperie, de volerie, deceit, robbery,
il est toujours bon, sur ma foi, it's always good, on my faith,
d'avoir les femmes avec soi. to have women with you.
Et sans elles, mes toutes belles, And without them, my very beautiful,
on ne fait jamais rien de bien! we never do anything good!
N'etes-vous pas de cet avis? Don't you agree?
Si fait, je suis de cet avis. If so, I agree.
C'est dit alors: vous partirez? So it says: will you leave?
Quand vous voudrez. When you want.
Mais ... tout de suite. But ... right away.
Ah! Permettez, permettez, Ah! Allow, allow,
Sil vous plait de partir, partez, Please leave, go,
mais je ne sius pas du voyage. but I’m not traveling.
Je ne pars pas. Je ne pars pas. I do not go. I do not go.
Carmen, mon armor, tu viendras, Carmen, my love, you will come,
et tu n'auras pas le courage, and you will not have the courage,
de nous laisser dans l'embarras. to leave us in embarrassment.
Mais, au moins, la raison, Carmen, But, at least, the reason, Carmen,
tu la diras! you will say it!
Je la dirai certainement. I will definitely say it.
    Voyons Let's see
La raison c'est qu'en ce moment, The reason is that right now,
    Eh bien. Well.
Je suis amoureuse. I am in love.
Qu'a-t-elle dit? Amoureuse? What did she say? In love?
Voyons, Carmen. Sois serieuse. Come on, Carmen. Be serious.
Amoureuse, a perdre l'esprit. In love, to lose your mind.
La chose certes nous etonne, The thing certainly surprises us,
mais ce n'est pas le premier jour but it's not the first day
ou vous aurez su, ma mignonne, or you will have known, my darling,
faire marcher de front le devoir. to make duty work together.
la devoir et l'amour, duty and love,
faire marcher le devoir et l'amour. make duty and love work.
Mes amis, je serais fortaise, My friends, I would be fortunate,
de partir avec vous ce soir, to go with you tonight,
mais cette fois, ne vous deplaise, but this time, please,
Il faundra que l'amour passe avant He will understand that love comes before
    le devoir. duty.
Ce soir l'amour passe avant le devoir. Tonight love comes before duty.

Well sung, but dreadful direction and acting. Why are the guys being so rotten to Frasquita, throwing her around? She looks thoroughly pissed off with them, and I'm not surprised. Aren't they supposed to be trying to persuade the girls to collaborate? And there are far too many meaningless gestures and shrugs for my liking. That's generally what opera singers (and some actors) do when they haven't been given sufficient direction.

+mjwemdee I could agree with you but call me old fashioned as for me opera is still the most about singing....
for me this is one of the best quintets I ever heard.........

The main message of the play is that men face danger by choice, for sport, accolades and profit: women face danger from men as part of their every-day lives. In this scene, the women are not asked to come, they are intimidated and dare not refuse. Carmen is brave enough to dare.
Carmen, mon armor, tu viendras, Carmen, my love, you will come,
et tu n'auras pas le courage, and you will not have the courage,
de nous laisser dans l'embarras. to leave us in embarrassment.

mjwemdee, Actually, This is the comic relief moment of the otherwise tragic opera. But these “know-it-all” directors want to go against the spirit of the play and music to show that they know better than the authors of the work.

@@hermitoldguy6312 That is not what the text says. The men are trying to persuade all three girls and sweeten them up: 'Nous l'avouons humblement et fort respectueusement...' They should really pile on the charm with Frasquita and Mercedes. However, this director clearly decided otherwise.
