None of the track at Michigan is flat. Even the back straight is banked five degrees toward the infield. Michigan is a masterpiece of mathematics and engineering. It was designed by Charles Moneypenny, who also designed Daytona.
Breck set himself up to the possibility of being taken out and should have anticipated the lead car coming up high to a better line, disturbing Pappas' grip and then coming up high into Breck. With 250 miles to go and it being a Rahal teammate at that, Breck should have backed off or gone to a slightly higher line so this couldn't have happened. Defensive racing.

This is the race were Kenny Brack basically lost the championship. As an oval master, he wasn't very good on road courses, so he needs on all ovals a good finish and points. But this DNF brokes his championship together with his DNF in the other 500 mile race in California. On all other oval tracks, he was at least 2nd (Nazareth, Rockingham) or wins it (Motegi, Milwaukee, Chicago, Eurospeedway).

The Hanford device was kind of a gimmick, but this was still a great race.
The Rahal cars should have finished 1 & 2 but it looked like Brack forced it & with 20 to go at that...
