@@dtexas2964 Racing in any open wheel series, particularly in the '90s, was a dangerous proposition. Hell, major changes in safety design didn't start occurring until the mid 2010s with the HALO in Formula 1 and the Aeroscreen in IndyCar. Same could be said for stock cars with the HANS devices and stricter seat designs before Earnhardt's death.
I was at the track that day... it was my first open wheel race I attended in person. I come back here to relive it now and then and to show people how awesome and insane the racing was in those years in CART.
Absolute travesty that we never saw these chassis' race at Indy. Would have been a spectacle to behold, and possibly a "neeeeewww traaaaaacckk reeecccoooorrrd"
@@RandysRacingPlace633 Meh, I disagree. Fuck the IRL. I just re-watched the Chicagoland 2002 finish and it was relatively boring. A close finish doesn't equate to an interesting one. The amount of lead changes between Andretti and Montoya is what makes this one of the best. Chicagoland 2002 was a close finish, but the cars were dead even for 5 laps without a change in position.
I attended the 2001 CART race at Michigan. It was unbelievable... 60 lead changes! This track, designed by the same engineer who designed Daytona (Charles Moneypenny) is MADE for speed and side-by-side competition.
@TheZadak the current indycars are normally aspirated and make around 630 hp with a maximum rpm of 10,500 rpm. the amazing turbocharged champ cars in this video were running at 16,000 rpm and making around 900 hp depending on the amount of boost they were allowed at each track. in 2003 (i think, it may have been 2004) champ car switched over to cosworth engines that were limited to 12,000 rpm, and made around 750 hp depending on the allowed amount of boost.
Jonathan Williams said that Frank was in the box, chanting "Michael Schumacher, look out! Michael Schumacher, look out!" as Juan Pablo took the checkered flag.
I'd love to see open wheel racing coming back to MIS. I went to to IRL races there, and each one was far better than any stock car race. Now, they race downtown, still a good race, but nothing like draft packs at MIS.
Ahh, what a great battle, and a great finish. I remember catching the tail end of this race on tv, and it was a blast to watch. Great stuff! Does anyone know what that song/theme is at the end of the video?
I was there for that unbelievably thrilling finish. That sound was like music. Sad for Max Papis as he had a great Team Rahal car, led a ton of laps and the Ford motor let go...
Awesome finish with Marques directly in the path.Do you crash into the back of him while beating the other guy? Montoya said he would have had he needed to.It was impossible to tell who had won from further down the track where we were sitting.
I went yr little al and bobby rahal battled and is or was the fastest race speed in history. I loved the wide sidewalk along the fence and the cars going by you right below!! - at least at that time it was that way. That was one all out speed and racing 2 mile track - loved it!
@TheZadak Quicker on a road course, but the Champ Cars of that era were beasts in horsepower and aero. This is the era where the closed course speed record was broken. F1 cars are not "so much faster than these cars"
Bollocks. Montoya just got bored of being out of the spotlight, and went where he felt wanted. He was a great F1 driver, just unfortunate to be on the tail end of the Schumi years.
this was a great finish but i dont think people realize how close it came to maybe one of the biggest wrecks ever. a crash that probably would have ended in the grandstands
This should have been the finish to the Indy 500 in 2000 with CART equipment if it was allowed and TG realized in 1996 splitting was the worst option as a whole for the sport than just over what the Indy 500 homers from USAC thought.
its curious u said that...Indy 500 on 2000 was win also by a Fast & Furious Juan Montoya in a very dominant way!! (even IRL and CART were apart they made their first crossover in that Legendary Race that maybe was the start point to the reunion of that incredible race categories years later )...
HAHA NA$CAR. Original. You're correct, though. Indy is it's own deal, and for some reason, drivers seem to think NASCAR is the place to be, when that isn't the case at all.
I see this before from IceBudweiser but in EUROSPORT channel and ESPN International. I used to like the old red scoring building sitting aside the start/finish line. Now the newly rennovated blue (I say ridiculous) building ruined the beauty of MIS. JPM nice racing with Andretti...
Indeed, racing on streets and road-courses only will damage the sport. I had a bad feeling that CCWS will fail the tradition of CART if they keep adding in road-racing like this, when IRL started to diversify their series.
I hate tony george. because of his actions champ car/cart eventually fell under and I now have nothing to look forward to on sundays. irl???? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! give me a break, what a joke. in the end he won of course and that's a sad deal because cart really was a great thing. i miss the roar of the engines, the sleekness of the cars, the exciting finishes, the amazing tracks.... etc. now i have to relive the glory days through old footage.
+Keith Valdez I enjoyed both personally, and arguably though the IRL era of 2001-2003 created some of the best open wheel racing I've ever seen. Shame we can't just enjoy both..
And the packed stands. races in 7 different countries. Budgets that are 10 times what they are now. It was just a great time for motor sorts. The mid 90's when Mansell was over here, it was peaking. even Senna was talking about driving the Indy 500. Technology made the cars quicker every year.
Tony George screwed up the 1996 Indy 500. CART was dumb to run the US 500 that year and cost them big time in the years after it. They never should have did that. It was about USAC and IMS trying to control open wheel racing especially Tony George along with Berine with it a little bit.
Dude, you know that always NASCAR forgets about Indy guys. If Wheldon, Allmendiger or Hornish trespass to NASCAR, they will ask "who the hell are these guys?"
I KNEW that but the reason why he is doing NHRA because ESPN has screwed itself time after time and announcers have been switched just to make whats his name (ESPN CEO) happy!
yeah. IRL is not as good as Champ Car was. absolutely not!... what a shame, I really miss Champ Car or CART. very sad :( ... indeed great victory, well done montoya!
The most fearless racing series there ever was
That's why drivers kept dying. Great!

91lemlem Tony George definitely hated this kind of CART chassis design. They just know found a way to not use the air box. Thank god
Those cars were beautiful!
Marcello Ribeiro one of most beautiful open wheel car
A great race and empty stands. Thank you Tony George.
It Tony George's fault that CART couldn't sell their product?
CART only fell apart because it didn't have the Indianapolis 500. Tony stole that from them.
LOL yea that sucks
@@dtexas2964 Yeah...When George yanks away the Indy 500 and half of the teams, I'd say it's his fault.

The sounds of these cars makes me rock hard. God damn I miss this.
4:38 Wait, Mad Max goes off the course with a problem *AND THERE WAS NO CAUTION???? THOSE WERE THE DAYS!!!!!!*
Except at Fontana the same year there were cautions for the same thing.
What Amazing race!! So Incredibleee close Dangerous Finish!!!
Fast & furious Montoyaa winning the battle!!
Jonathan Williams said that Frank was in the box, chanting "Michael Schumacher, look out! Michael Schumacher, look out!" as Juan Pablo took the checkered flag.
So glad to see JPM back in IndyCars *WHERE HE FUCKING BELONGS.* Too bad the car he drives now is a fucking dog compared to the one he drove here.

MetalMastodon they also use to have so many grandstands in like turns 3 and 4 and now they are all gone.
Fabulous driving by Mike & juan.now that's racing!
Paul Paige and screaming V8 turbos, the sounds of an era…
Michael knew that Montoya would winn ,if he gets behind Marques, that`s why Michael tried to bump Montoya.
A very nice race with alot of action!
👍🏻👍🏻
fantastic race!

Mark Sulka and it died
A pure audible experience!
Those were the days...wish they can come back!!
If Murray Walker commentated this epic finish, he gonna be NUTS!!!!!!
great memories, best race
ABC7?! I think this came from my original VHS tape!

I've got the 2001 race uploaded in it's entirety. I thought the final 500 mile race at Michigan was pretty special.
Esse é o Montoya... Bravo piloto.
I wish the brought Cart back, it was so good, cool, hot, sexy, gorgeous, etc, etc, etc
Now thats proper racing right there. F1 take note!

1995 was absolutely packed crowds, 2000 and whole sections are empty.
ଳଳଳ ଚଚଚ thanks Tony George and CART fiasco 4 years earlier and the flying tire accident a couple of years earlier that killed a fan.
Paul Page is a great commentator. The IRL would do well to get him back in the booth!
Great vid BTW!
JUST FANTASTIC!!!
montoya en la cary era sencillamente fabulosos. sorprendentemente espectacular. lo mejor de lo mejor.
VIVA JP MONTOYA!!!
NO abrá nunca una mejor carrera !!!
Something better than indycar??? Come on.... Pure racing
Bollocks.
Montoya just got bored of being out of the spotlight, and went where he felt wanted. He was a great F1 driver, just unfortunate to be on the tail end of the Schumi years.
Almost like a NASCAR finish. Incredible!!!
This is better than anything nascar ever did
I'm not familiar with NHRA but isn't Marty Reid used to cover that? Why did they had to switch places with Paul Page?
Paul Page also does the announcing for the Coney Island Hot Dog eating contest for ESPN :) LOL
Not to mention he does commentary for the X Games for anything with a motor, and involves racing.
@rantanamo how much power do / did they have?
I don't watch indycar or champ car that much
This was intense!!
@Grayqboufan thank you!
It still makes no sense everytime I see either this or a California race why CART wanted to abandon ovals. The racing was always close!
Que carreron y obviamente feliz porque gano montoya ese dia...el final estuvo de infarto,,,,
I hope for some ovals in CC's near future as well.
Wow.
Do you know there are NASCAR-heads who actually question whether Juan "Formula One" Montoya can race on ovals?
No wonder that Montoya was so bloody quick in F1. Jesus, CART drivers are brave boys.
Who are the commentators here? I've heard them on a lot of videos from that era.
The announcer is Paul Page and the racing analyst is Parker Johnstone.
this was a great finish but i dont think people realize how close it came to maybe one of the biggest wrecks ever. a crash that probably would have ended in the grandstands
But it didn't? You're just making shit up asshole.
Ahh, ChampCar (or CART for me), back when it doesn't suck.
The reason Paul Page doesn't do IRL or Champ Car now is because he does the NHRA on ESPN now
