Born in 80, didn't discover metallica until 92. Never heard this song so I listened to the original. Of course I like the Metallica version better, but my hats off to Sir Elton John. Great song

@@gunsgoodtime the reason why u haven't heard the original Elton John song of Funeral for a friend, is because its harder rock n roll song from Elton John. Ppl for some reason have only heard his softer/piano rock songs like Crocodile rock etc. I think saturdays nights alright for fighting one of the greatest glam rock songs ever.

That’s a great compliment. Technically it’s currently a band called Beat. But it’s only a band that has formed for one tour. Look them up, but I’d have to agree the current best band I the world is Beat. That said… I can’t stop watching this performance. 🔥

Dude musicians of all stripes look up to Elton John. Many rockers of the 80s were influenced as kids by Elton’s music in the 70s. He was the rock star in the early to mid seventies. He plays piano so he does a lot of ballads but he also wrote some good rockers in the 70s.

It’s also interesting to know that Elton John is a huge fan of Nothing Else Matters, and during a Howard Stern (?) episode he made it clear to Metallica, and James was noticeably emotional.

James has been sounding great ever since the band started touring again post-Covid, I think the time off combined with going back to rehab did him a world of good. And on the 72 Seasons tour, not only has he been sounding great but he looks happier than I can remember ever seeing him.

Two notices. At the end of the show when Elton went to play his songs he commented about the performances and obviously he gave his congratulations and separated Metallica for their cover and how well was played. Not funny thinking that the other musicians played that night are monsters too. Secondly Bernie mentioned that Metallica are the greatest band in the world ... What more someone can ask for recognition about our Mets?

There’s only a few ppl who can cover a song and make it their own. Joe Cocker is one. No one can deny that man’s talent. Metallica is next. I’ve never heard anyone cover an Elton John song and do it justice. These guys nailed it to the bone. And seeing Elton get into it the way he did, shows how much he respects these guys. And he does. I love all kinds of music, but I play hard rock and metal. This just made my freaking day. Absolutely loved it.

    WOW, I stumbled across this a few weeks ago. I, like you have been mesmerized by it. My all time favorite EJ song brought back to life by this AMAZING cover!! ITS SO OBVIOUS THEY PUT THEIR HEART AND SOUL INTO THIS!! Put their own spin on it but keeping it the same, if that makes any sense. Much like when they did turn the page. Its almost like those songs were made for them to cover. Id put this in the masterpiece category fo sho!! GREAT REACTION TOO!! ;

    Woahhh. 😮
I cant say anything but this one is a top level cover in rock music, say again its 100% destined to be a landmark live perfomance in the near future. Dont need a second listening to put it fast & straight in my music library.
They nailed it, like the used to do making covers (Metallica is not only one of, if not, the greatest band ever, they are also one the best "cover band" ever seen and this one proves it again). Putting their unique touch and style on it but also respecting the original song by keeping it always recognizable. Every band member is on point (including most-reviled poor Lars) and very committed to live up to expectations on a highlighted occasion like this. And remarkably James sounds amazing here, making his own the original song, just as he made with previous hits on Garage albums.
So, previously Sir Elton praised them with highest honor words (James tears speak for themselves), and now the music world watched in anticipation as they expected returning the favor between top level musicians artists...and Metallica pay back the debt meeting every expectations we could make🤘🏻.
Elton John resumes it perfectly in the end, "Amazing". One of the best covers ever made, the perfect moment and scenario with the right talent invested, produces a memorable perfomance like this. The kind of beam that explains the legendary and iconic status of Metallica out there some people doesnt get to.
Pd1: props to Elton John who was the one who made the song and furthermore started all this positive and rich feedback with James and Metallica.
Pd: please guys, its a massive outcry between the fans, you are very capable, we need it, you have to...make as soon as possible a Garage Inc Vol.2 album! Come on! Its a safe bet for a succesful, very enoyable and truly appreciated album for every metallicats out there. Tons of possibilities to choose, even the original artist are honored and satisfied to be covered by a prestige band like Metallica, probably some of them (like Diamond Head and others) should be happily relieved economically.
After M72 tour they should do it.

First time seeing your channel because of this video. I can relate to your Fandom.
Their greatness is part musical talent, but mostly being good song writers. Though they didn't write this song, they arranged it in their own way and it works.
I'm a Lars fan. I know he's not a great drummer. But his ear for good music is what makes Metallica work for decades.

I am glad to see a reactor react to history. This was a historic performance and Alex seemed to realize that by the end. You can live to 100 and not hear a better cover. And the man sitting next to Elton (camera right, Elton's left) is Bernie Taupin, the finest lyricist to ever walk the earth. Talent knows talent and these are two of the most talented musicial talents of our lifetime (or any lifetime) melding into one.
