    We asked people in South Carolina what the Confederate flag means to them. Some say it's about southern history and heritage, while others believe it's about slavery and racism. The debate is strong in light of calls from South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Republican Presidential candidate Lindsey Graham calling for the removal of the flag in the wake of the shootings at a historically black church that left nine people dead.

      No, not wrong. People trying to pretend history is not what it is... It was about the State's Rights to own slaves. The whole of Southern society was believed to collapse with the abolition of slavery...

      RepublicAgent It is interesting that in his first inaugural address Abraham Lincoln said he had "...no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so." It complicates the argument that the South left the Union solely over a dispute about "State's Rights to own slaves". Is it your belief then that the South left the Union to preserve slavery, and the Union fought the war for the purpose of ending slavery?

    People here in Ireland sometimes use the Confederate flag, its seen as a cultural and heritage symbol not racist.
    You will see it displayed in bars and at music festivals. I had some American friends ask me one day why the Confederate flag was flying from a pub in Belfast. They were shocked but to us its our cultural links to the USA as most Irish settled in the Eastern and Southern states that are known as 'The South' in the USA.

      ***** You've got the history right! They were called 'Scotch-Irish', mostly Scots (also Brits & Welsh) who moved to Ulster & other parts of Ireland to provide a buffer and a means of facilitating colonization of Ireland by British rule almost 4 centuries ago. My father's somewhat speculative account of his heritage only made sense to me when I learned about the Scotch-Irish. He claimed that he was mostly Scotch-Irish, but also of British & Welsh extraction, but was reluctant to claim any Irish origins for which he seemed to have aversion despite the fact that the American community of his childhood was largely Irish-American! WTF? The other source of my confusion was that his parents both had British surnames! WTF, again!
      Anyway, not all of the Scotch-Irish émigrés to America ended up in the South. My father, who was from 3 or 4 generations in Michigan, claimed his ancestors moved to the frontier Michigan (then) mostly from New York State, Connecticut & Massachusetts; all Northern states! Most people seem to be unaware of the fact that their heritage is defined by a number of ancestors that doubles about 4-5 times per century, so my own ancestry for example, includes at least *65,000* ancestors from the time Scots moved to Ireland in large numbers. Note that there are many Irish-named descendants in our Northern states. Supposedly, most of that part of my American heritage dates back to the 1600's, so there must have been a surge in migration of Scotch-Irish to America then. The old family cemetery in Michigan includes mostly Scottish names mixed with Irish & British names, likely many of which are not clearly of a specific cultural heritage. My grandmother's surname was Smith, but my dad claimed she was mostly Scottish which confused me until I discovered that the great Enlightenment philosopher/economist Adam Smith was a Scot!
      As an ethnic American subculture, the Scotch-Irish brought a personal independent attitude of self-sufficiency, self-reliance and semi-anarchy to the American culture that has infused an underlying rebelliousness to it. That influence also drove American pioneers westward to seek space and distance from the overly-urbane East Coast of America. Today, that effect is evident mostly in the South where so many have that defiant subculture still, but it remains elsewhere here too. As for me, I can't seem to get it out of my blood!

    • @51wins

      Thanks for your interesting comment. I live in Northern Ireland am of Ulster-Scots (Scots-Irish) decent myself. I also don't consider myself Irish rather I see myself as British as does most people in Northern Ireland.
      There is an amazing history to the Ulster-Scots who went to America and had such a massive impact on the history, culture and leadership of America through some of the most important parts of your history.
      The sad thing is that most people who went to America did actually just accept the term Irish over time and the Ulster-Scots/Scots-Irish connection has been lost.

Did you know that back during the Jim Crow period, a black man could be arrested for not having a job? Yes! It's true! A black man could be walking down the street and stopped and asked if he had a job. If he didn't, they would arrest him, send him to jail, and then the jail would farm him out to various plantations as, you guessed it, slave labor. Back when this institutional racism was happening, the confederate flat was flying over the state capitol in South Carolina. You see the point. Do you get it. The flag has nothing to do with southern heritage. I mean, what does grits and gravy have to do with the flag? What does chicken fried stake have to do with the confederate flag? The confederate flag is actually the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia and the other southern states adopted it because Virginia was willing to fight to keep their slaves and the other states jumped on board. That's how this flag got popular throughout the South. So to say this flag is about southern pride is partly right. But they should include the reason for that pride, why they fought, and that was to keep their slaves. Which is, kinda racist.

      I see where he's coming from, but at the same time he's really playing down the role of slavery in the values of confederacy and the reasons for secession. I mean, the cornerstone speech by the Confederate VP states outright why his party identified with preserving slavery, and stated white supremacy as being a "moral truth" (among many other racist things). He described the preservation of slavery as the main reason for secession in the first place and for that first guy to say that slavery was only "1%" of what the flag represents is quite inaccurate in my opinion.

    The Confederate flag represents the Confederacy, which was a nation of states that seceded from the United States. They seceded over an unfair taxation issue and the issue of states' rights. The issue of states' rights was kicked off by whether or not states have the right to allow slavery.
    There it is. Does the Confederate flag represent slavery or racism? Only partly. It represents a lot more than that. Does the American flag represent racism, genocide, or slavery? Those are parts of our history, but there is a great deal more to American history.

I genuinely believe yes there are some people who holds on to the flag because of the reason behind it, and there are those who hold on to it who look past the dark aspect of its history and just sees it as history and their ancestors lived in that time. It’s divided between people who do not intend offense and those who still hold on to it for that reason. Humans feel driven to belong & have a sense of identity, especially as part of a community.
      Since American identity is disparaged & rendered meaningless (because we’re basically just a global shopping mall now)...people will gravitate towards other forms of identitarianism.

      Ethan Johnson Your rebel flag stand for several different things and white supremacy is one of the most know,It might have started as a battle flag, but hate hijacked it a long time ago.You are making a vain attempt at history, but you are getting the wrong version from somewhere. To say most slaves wanted to stay on the plantation is crazy. I have read thousands of slave narratives, and they vary from one to the other. This is how it go, Most were caught off guard by the announcment , and looked at each other in total shock, then they looked at master after he made his sharecropping offer, and said nothing until after he had walked back into the big house, and then they let go of some shouting and dancin' and visiting the next plantation for more dancin' and shoutin. then most were concerened about trying to connect with sons, daughters , mothers or loved ones who had been sold away ..by that good massa of yours , who sold away children because he had took out a loan he could not pay, or some 13 year old girl was sold because Missses knew that Masssa were having too much of that other kind of dark sweet potato pie.Many left not knowing where to go because the had never been nowhere and knew only other plantations, 90 % of all the southern work was plantation based .There wa no factories, wharehouses or welfare.There was only millions of freed black folks who had nothing and knew nothing, no readin , no writin, and only farming skills mostly.Within the first two years after the war , most slaves had left the plantation to other plantations with loved ones or better conditions, do not take my word , read the narratives.And until you understand the brainwashed mental condition of most slaves and the cruel slave system, you will never understand. As far as Africa, that history is to deep for you, , What nomadic tribe are yiou talking about, There is only 2 nomadic tribes out of the hundred differnt nations that arrived here.

After having suffered the agony of having children, husbands and wives ripped from them, they just couldn't bare to part from sociopathic thieving, murdering bastards who claimed the rebell flag as a representation of their authority and privlege to own ppl, for nothing more than being White.....slaves enjoyed being slaves??? I know this is an old comment but an interesting view. The issue with the confederate flag is the cold hard fact that the southern secession was based on slavery. The lost cause myth can be debunked and there is hard evidence of when it started and the repercussions because of it. I see a lot of people in the comments praise the first guy, but he is very misinformed on southern history.
      Now on your point on the Aztecs. This is a case of whataboutism. There is no social issue regarding what the Aztecs did for rituals or economy. There isn’t people today asking Mexico for reparations because they come from tribes conquered or enslaved by the Aztecs. For many Aztec culture is their pride because it is an ancestral history lost because of the Spanish conquest. Maybe those people are misinformed about Aztec history as well.
      Personally I won’t get a tattoo of it, but it’s important to remember indigenous history as we know it was lost because of conquest. Two different situations compared to American slavery.

    Yeah, the confederacy practiced slavery. What country that has been around for hundreds of years HASN'T? Mexico practiced slavery too.
    Does that make the Mexican flag a symbol of slavery?

      The mexican flag was created at the beginning of their independence from Spain. They were also gradually abolishing slavery during this time.

      It makes the mexican flag a symbol of freedom (from slavery) and independence. Certainly incomparable with the confederate flag.

    A genuine question: what heritage? I'm asking to better understand a point of view, and I want to know what "heritage" are these people talking about? The heritage was built up by and around the owning of slaves, was it not? Therefore, what heritage are they talking about that "isn't all bad"? Gravy and biscuits?

      +Bow down to Anna Conda The flag has gone through few changes and has represented several Southern States, armies, the South, and an idea. Who exactly made it, when and where did they say they made this particular flag as a symbol of racism? And just out of curiosity, do you wear or support any symbols of racism?

    • @BowdowntoAnnaConda
      @BowdowntoAnnaConda 9 лет назад

      Nah

    • @dreadgunner
      @dreadgunner 9 лет назад +1

      Nah? Is that no to he question of you knowing exactly who made the flag, when it was made and where a quote may be found by said people of him/her/them stating it was made as a symbol of racism. Of no that you do not have or support any symbols of racism, which I would say thank you for making my point for me. As you clearly believe you get to decide if any symbol of any cutler or cause is one of racism or not. In which case I would say you are right and that it should not be up for the viewer or the offended to dictated the meaning of a symbol.
      However, I assume you don't see it that way. I tend to believe that you are one who thinks you have no symbols of racism nor do you support any thing that others might view as racist. Yet you likely feel perfectly comfortable dictating to others what their symbols mean, and would have no problem with other people being forced into compliance with your way of thinking.

    The flag wasn’t meant to insult African Americans and such it is the South’s heritage. Our pride, our loyalty, and trust in one another. I swear if one more person say that flag stands for racism I’m going to snap.
