This is amazing and speaks to me deeply I was almost 35 before I realized my hair was naturally curly/coily My mom started perming my hair in kindergarten because my texture was different from hers and she didn’t have time or the know how to manage it .. I’m still learning how to manage it myself after 10+ yrs natural... it has been a journey and sometimes I still find it hard to fully embrace my curls and undo the brainwashing of society and my mom thank you for this 💜💜💜💜🙏🏽

@@naveedmoorgin8311 It can be easily tangled. The curls can collide with each other. Brush your hair properly and tie it when going to school. When school's done, be yourself.
My hair has always been “poker stick straight” but I’ve always wished I had curly hair since I was a kid because it’s so beautiful. Funny how people always seem to want what they don’t have
@@starryskies113 I guess when you’re a kid and you really don’t like yourself or how you look it’s hard to see the value in it. I know I’ve been blessed in life but I used to take a straightener every morning in junior high and high school and curl out the top of my hair to give it some more body, I was so self conscious of my “flat hair”
I have since learned to love it and accept myself how I am, but it took a while. I was so embarrassed one day when I forgot to straighten it, and was shocked when my friend told me it looked normal 😂 I do admit that commercials and stuff cater more to my hair type, but when my hair didnt look the same as the models I saw, it still made me self conscious. Heavily edited or styled images really can have such a negative affect on body image 😩
I love this!! we need more natural hair representation. As a child, i got made fun of because of my hair. It was called "Ugly", "Untaimed" (even though it was always styled), a teacher told my family my hair was too distracting. I got made fun of because i didn't straighten my hair, it was a mess. Got called ballheaded even though i've got PLENTY of hair. I began to wish I could straighten my hair or that i was another race that has naturally straight hair. My parents always told me my hair was so beautiful, but after a while i stopped believing it because kids would tell me otherwise. It took up until recently for me to truly love my hair, I had locks that were really long. I'd style them different ways, gots tons of complements. Recently I combed them out because i missed my hair being out, I had my hair locked since 5th grade. I'm now a sophmore in college and I love how versitile my hair is, how i can do so much with it. Can be a real pain in the ass sometimes but i love it!
@@bonitanzinga5167 Sis just wait until it gets stuck in a nail. I wouldn't be mad at the teacher for calling your parents telling telling that its a distraction from the class, because that's right
This video also shows what an important role older siblings play in the lives of their younger brothers and sisters! My mother had a miscarriage before she got pregnant with me. I always dreamed of a brother or a brother or sister. What would life have been like?
I have curly hair and I have mixed feelings about this film. I often feel like we as African Americans are so starved for representation and for images that look like us, that even if there is a hint of negativity in the content that we can relate to, we embrace it. I've seen animation from animators from Africa and other parts of the world, where the character with thick curly hair is the heroine and her hair is a non-issue. I think part of the many dilemmas within the experience of African-Americans is that we've had to survive in a nation wherein all parts of who we are deemed and propagandized as being inferior, including our hair; but when I look online on Pinterest and see all the beautiful black women of different shades, different hair textures, who have their hair, cut, faded, braided, twisted and otherwise, it's real beauty that's exists outside of the American and Caucasian standard. I myself would rather see a character who rocks her curly hair and is beautiful and knows and embraces that she is beautiful.
What if this was someone telling their own personal story with this film? Cuz I went through the same thing as in this film so I appreciate it and it gave me a chance to self reflect on my growth. Black women are allowed to share the negative parts of their life, it’s okay to not always be okay and confident and perfect.
I'm from Africa and I'm here to tell you that hair is an issue... I have had braiders tell me to put relaxer on my hair because it was too hard to braid...
@@Liz-up2ti this actually happened to me! I my mum was saying to relax my hair and so was my old braider, and I caved. I regretted it so much and it ended up damaging my hair to the point of needing to cut it. That was a couple years ago though and im with a new braider. My hair is healthier than ever now:D
@@Liz-up2ti Fr. I literally had my hair relaxed for like 10 years my life. Probably would have been longer if I didn’t just straight up hate getting my hair done and chopped it all off.
More young girls need to see this ! Awesome video. This made me tear up after 27 years I am just now accepting all of me all the way down to my curls and coils 🥰💪🏿
I have perfectly straight hair and all my sisters have wavy hair. I used to spend hours with a curling iron and by the time I got to school it would be straight again. I gave up the curling iron in eighth grade and learned to appreciate my hair for what it is. We all want to be something we are not until we accept ourselves as we are. Everyone is beautiful in their own way and styles come in and go out.
Here is what I think, no one should be ashamed about their own hair in anyway as I agree with you it styling your hair should also not be influenced by anyone else as well. If someone wants to straighten their hair for their own pleasure than do so, if you want to curl your own hair for your pleasure and not be influenced because everyone else wants you to do so than do so....its not a bad thing but the only bad thing about it is when others say you should do it or you are influenced because you don't think you look pretty at all by other standards
It's tragic that most Black women can relate to this short film. Why must we all go through self-hatred before eventually learning to love ourselves the way we are? That's not fair.
I love this so much! I remember when I was younger I always wanted to have straight hair like my Asian mom and in 2018 I got a perm...I regretted it weeks later and got bored with straight hair....I chopped off all my hair that same year... I realized that my curly hair is beautiful and it brought me lots of attention all the time. I got many compliments which always makes me smile... I love my curly hair so much
I’m here for the representation as a 4b/4c (super kinky and coily )girl myself. But the whole time I was worried their house was gonna burn down because the flat iron was still plugged in 😅😖
We have been uneducated on how to care for our hair! I love working with hair from it's natural state! All you need is a spray bottle of water, grease, and a wide tooth comb. Separated the hair in small sections and Detangle from the ends to the roots. Thank me later🕵🏽
Love this! Hair was just something that sat on top of my head. From the day I was born, a bowl cut ruled my life. Until, finally, I left home. My first Sensei was shocked when I walked through the dojo. I had gone home and the first item was another trip to the hairdresser…and, another bowl cut. No. Sensei told me to never cut my hair again. I was a free woman. My time in exile was over. Even at 73, the hair and I go places where a bowl cut would never make it! I love the independence this young ladies hair has.
Really? I was the opposite I was the white girl wanting to do my hair like the black girls in class I loved the braided hair and beads they would do but it never happened
My mother's hair is wonderfully curly and all her sisters' and brother's are the same. Mine aren't. I was dreaming about such a black and curly hair all my life. My family promised that my hair would change one day, but unfortunately it didn't happen. So I think all curly haired girls are amazingly lucky...

I felt this same frustration with my hair. It was matted, dry and didn't look how I wanted it to. I was impatient with it and how it wanted to do its own thing. I'd put it up in a bun and let it rot for weeks on end, thinking my hair was against me. When really, after my mom helped me comb through those knots, I felt free and calm. My hair started to feel more alive. Now these days, I learned to accept my hair and be gentle with it. And that's when I noticed it became a lot easier to manage. Our hair just wants love by us mostly, not just society (even though others opinions on our hair dont matter). But with us? Definitely. I learned to understand and nurture it. Now, it doesn't feel neglected.
Ooh I can't stand that!!! One girl pulled one of my curls down to see how long my hair really was. I was like don't do that!!! You're messing up my hairstyle🤦🏾 I bet your hair is beautiful, but people should ask to touch your hair.
Curls are beautiful! We feel such pressure from society to fit into an approved specific box. We are all beautiful and it is our differences that make us even more beautiful! Keep those curls and rock them!! They are supremely beautiful!

Vivendo e aprendendo!

Black girls matter! This is an awesome short. Often times in the media, they only show the very loose curls or straight hair, especially straight hair, which is a big sign of texturism. It’s really cool that this short shows young girls with 4C natural hair. Natural hair is beautiful!!! 👩🏽🦱👩🏾🦱👩🏿🦱
I had straight hair before, then puberty hit and I noticed my hair getting waves, my mom called it messy and told me to brush it-which made it more worse. She said I wasn't brushing properly so I kept brushing and started hating my hair. I wished to have it straightened because I thought that pretty girls had straight hair and wanted to be like them. Months later I saw videos of girls not realizing that they were curly/wavy haired, and saw their before pictures. I started to realize I had wavy-curly and started to take care of it. I grew to love my hair now, and I'm disappointed in myself that it took me about 3 years to realize that
It was a opposite reaction for me. My hair was more straightish as a kid, but I got wavy curly hair when I got older and after I had a big haircut (when it grew back it was different) and I was very happy because my hair had more volume.
Black peeps' hair is so amazing! I'm kinda jealous tbh! Braids, dreadlocks, afro or just natural, it's so gorgeous! Black kids and adults should never be forced to change it! Ayyyyye that’s what it’s all about, you get it!!!
My lil sis has really curly hair that she always ties in a ponytail, though it use to be almost like an afro. I might tell her about that, if she wants to Keep the Curls :)
@@lilautistie5281 yeah, super tight pony tails can damage curly hair, if I put mine up I use those big, squishy hair bands that have no elastic so that my curls don’t get strangled. Its awesome that you remind her that her hair is beautiful and that she doesn’t need so many chemicals in her hair. :)
Kids are so mean! Its just hair, like those kids are just jealous because you have beautiful hair!!!
I can't believe there was no talking throughout the movie yet the message was clearly passed across. Beautiful 😍❣️
This is amazing and speaks to me deeply I was almost 35 before I realized my hair was naturally curly/coily My mom started perming my hair in kindergarten because my texture was different from hers and she didn’t have time or the know how to manage it .. I’m still learning how to manage it myself after 10+ yrs natural... it has been a journey and sometimes I still find it hard to fully embrace my curls and undo the brainwashing of society and my mom thank you for this 💜💜💜💜🙏🏽
This is so unique..... it's basically teaching you to love your hair as it is and don't care about what others think because when u experiment you take the life out of it resulting in you regretting and possibly damaging it...JUST LET IT BE ‼️
Yeah sure, let your hair be curly all it wants until it gets stuck in a nail.
Umm u could chill out with that. anyones hair could stay curly and that’s kinda rude. Just Bc it’s curly does not mean it’s tangled
Funny how people always seem to want what they don’t have
Exactly, me too
@MAP Investments I would hereby like to confirm that black hair with all its curls is beautiful! 😉😘
bruh it funny how u complain about straight hair
I'm glad you learned how to love your hair again every one should love their hair no matter if its curly, wavy, frizzy or strait :D

This video also shows what an important role older siblings play in the lives of their younger brothers and sisters! My mother had a miscarriage before she got pregnant with me. I always dreamed of a brother or a brother or sister. What would life have been like?
Indeed!
I would have had three baby brothers but it's okay. Life is tuff, oh how it would have been.
She actually looked better with the curly hair than the straight one.🤦
ofc she did
Ikr !!!
Nah I think she looked better with the straight one
You know, 3D animation is hard.
Yeah..
@@marajones1828 i’m wondering when or who said that black women weren’t allowed to ‘share the negative parts of their lives’
@@Liz-up2ti this actually happened to me! I my mum was saying to relax my hair and so was my old braider, and I caved. You don’t have curls!
@@PrincessofKeys so true, if you want your hair to be straight/wavy/curly then you should try it, but you shouldn’t feel PRESSURED to change it.
Thank you so so much for representing REAL black coily hair. We don't all have neat perfect afros or loose curls like most people think
It's tragic that most Black women can relate to this short film. Why must we all go through self-hatred before eventually learning to love ourselves the way we are? That's not fair.
The plugged in hair straightener drove me bonkers. Unplug that thing! Cartoon got me. Nice story about accepting self.
I love this so much!

Vivendo e aprendendo!
