Surly Skid Loader a Compact Electric Cargo Bike | Why We Did It and Other Musings

- Introducing the Surly Skid Loader, a compact electric cargo bike wired for large loads, small footprints, and everyday deviant behavior.
We built Skid Loader to haul heavy loads and go where traditional long-tails can’t quite fit. Engineered to expand utility, it’s ideal for cutting down on car trips and navigating tight spaces - think bus racks, packed trains, or small apartments. Coming in three broad-fitting frame sizes, we’ve equipped it with a robust rear rack, the option to run dual batteries, and clearance for large-volume tires. For hauling more gear over longer distances and everyday rides on whatever surface, Skid Loader rolls along, happy to oblige.
"Undisclosed metal scrapyard" ... It's PSC Metals in Nashville. The big hill is 12th St S in East Nashville. And our pedestrian bridge over the river is featured at the end of the video, as well.
You're so wise, like an old owl
Very nice. I wish I had a job to commute to.
I so so badly want to see surly make a fat tire, front loading cargo bike. Like an urban arrow shorty but with 3-4” wide tires.
Surly if you hear this, please make a front loader someday!
YES i keep dreaming of one with a recumbent seat...i might have to build one
I was not going to buy this bike. After seeing the dancing at the end of the video, I feel compelled to buy 10 in appreciation.
Wish it was class 3 but otherwise a perfect configuration. I'm glad you didn't go with 20 inch wheels like a lot of compact cargo bikes
Make a non electric version! You'll be the only one on the market. If you offered this in non elec I would buy it day 1.
I’m so attracted to this bike and these people but mostly this bike
Cool. Now I need an "e" Midnight Special/Straggler.
Love that this was filmed in Nashville! MY CITY! LETS GOOO
Y’all need to make an analog one!
Needs fenders and a belt drive, with an Enviolo rear hub instead of the derailer.
The panther cry with the kickstand *chef's kiss* sound design!
Great alternative to the Benno Boost, love the big wheels!
As a happy Benno Boost owner of 4 years, I can attest to this design being great for an urban dweller that doesn’t have a garage, and doesn’t want to own a car. but needs an e-bike that can easily fit through doors and gates, be carried up a flight of stairs, and haul a 50lb kid on the back rack. Great work Surly, this is a fine addition next to the Big Easy. Let’s get more families out of their cars, and onto ebikes!
As a Boost owner, I agree
2:00 cougar sound for kickstand, not sure how to feel about that other than to love it
This looks more like an all round utilitarian bike more than a dedicated cargo bike.
So I'm not sure calling it a cargo bike is really doing it justice.
I'm in the market for an all rounder shopper, cargo, commuting, mini touring, socialising, fun e-bike and that looks very much like an ordinary analogue bike which I still want.
I currently have a hybrid workhorse which has a variety of racks and bags for every use and I have two trailers for carrying everything from 70kg of weekly family shopping to a full sized lawnmower.
I just want something that will help me do more and go further.
This has been very interesting.
I'm also 6'7 so I really do need a very large frame size so I will have to check that out too.
Will have to check this one out. Need to get something for the commute and grocery shopping
Neat bike, but I feel like it's just a little behind the curve rather than ahead of it like most other Surly models. I'd love to see Surlys take on a compact-ish front loader!
Surly front loader would be siiiicccc
exactly my thoughts. hard to look past an electrified omnium cargo
@@naaaateeee honestly, I had something more like an urban arrow shorty in mind, but something like an omnium seems along Surlys style too. I want to tour on a front/low loading cargo bike with lots of braze ons and bottle bolts that isn't nine feet long and $5k+ :)
A 27.5 x 2.4 cargo fork like the crust's 20" version that fits the ogre's axle to crown would be sick too
They did that with the Electric Big Dummy. "Cargo" is a loose term to appeal to potential Ebike Consumers, who has know idea about traditional cargo pedal bike/s, or recumbent, etc...
Despite having no use for it I want one so bad...
A step through cargo bike that could hold two kids would be great
Tern GSD
jeeze i love this bike. maybe someday!
Costs are always going to be high when you go with a Bosche motor. I don't feel comfortable leaving a $5,000 bike tied up but that's just me. Cool bike!
Funny you mention that. I no longer take my Big Easy when I know I have to leave it unattended, welcome to 2022 Los Angeles. It makes me sad because it defeats the purpose of this bike due to social conditions.
@@motodisiac that true everywhere. 105 and up used to put a target on your bike. Now it's a bosch mid drive
What about a non electric one
Warm analog feeling 😅
You definitely designed this for somebody like me. The marketing was even custom curated to my taste 👌🏻 Will be calling Thicke and Flat Tire in the AM. Just found my next bike. Had to sell my karate monkey 😭 when the kiddos where younger. But I have just met my new chariot 🙌🏻
Very nice "less aggressive" cargo design. It seems to have all the needed/desirable features. Now how about offering a similar bike (perhaps frame only) but without the mounting for the mid drive motor? Something with a 175mm rear dropout spacing so a rear hub Bafang G62 motor can be used (for those that prefer hub motors and a less expensive ebike build) but just not necessarily as over sized as the full on "fat tire" bikes. This would open up cargo ebikes to more people. It could also just make for a killer all season class 3 ebike with room for really aggressive studded winter tires/fenders, but with a nice relaxed geometry. Maybe call it the "Skid Lite"?
Flash and the guys at Q-West showed us the page for this bike a few days ago, and it looks vurra interesting.
Flash's SL came in, and he's putting it together tonight. Can't wait to see it assembled. If I were in the market for an ebike, this would be at or near the top of my list.
$4800 is a tech bro's bike, not a bike for the working stiff.
Belt drive option please.
You guys are awesome 😎 God bless.....
Warm analogue feeling :D
I didnt know i wanted this until now.
If only Surly would make a cool cargo bike 🥰🙏🙂...currently in love with an Ogre 💜🥰
I love you guys ❤️
Seems a wonderful design, one i would recommend. I'm just surprised by one tiny detail here, that has nothing to do with this frame, why on earth would you promote it with a saddle mounted like it's a freakin periscope ?
Looks great!
Haha that dance 😂 im convinced...
The Blackbarrows legacy
So this is where the Salsa Blackboro went. As soon as you make a non electric version I am there.
Just by memory this seems close but more relaxed (which it can be because of the assist kit). I feel like the blackborrow was more like a long mountain bike and had a larger rack. Also I think it had a lot more tire clearance and may have run on wider axles.
@@RBradenG can confirm. I'm having a custom frame made that mimics the Blackborow in its mid length cargo bike form, it rides like a stable mountain bike, but clears 27.5x4.5ish tires if I remember correctly.
@@mrhankbotful are you having a fatbike made too e bike
Can you elaborate more on this
@@tomtripptree5079 not an E-bike, just an adventure bike.
The only problem with this bike is that you want to ride "analog" it weighs a mutha'.
You guys rock!
Correct me if am wrong. This looks likes a regular bike with racks. A legit cargo bike would have bucket (for cargo) integrated into the design of the bike frame.
its only 6000$
You guys forgot to add a couple other frame color options :(
You guys are legends ha ha
мужики, это тема, но очень не достает 1х1 и ЕЦР. Вы хоть намекните там
Is it possible to buy just the Frameset?
Bring back 26
It needs to be unlocked to class 3
Would you make this with a belt drive?
That price!
How much?
Not really compact with wheels that large and a standard bike frame. I think in the Ebike world, "compact" would be more along the lines of at most 20inch wheels, and most likely with a folding frame. The bike in this video is more of a standard commuter bike.
Żabciaście 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸😊👍🌻
Nice job guys. Keep it up. But keep making the "Big" family of cargo bikes!!!
And if it's not an e-bike, it's a #naughtny bike. This is the truth :-)
I'd like to ride that bike and eat chips.
" ... That warm analog feel..."
😂😂😂
I laughed cuz mechanical motors are analog too! 🤡
60 pounds is to heavy...
How much?? Minimum to Maximum. I shouldn't have to scroll down to find these numbers.
"warm analog"
Maybe 24 inch wheels would have made the cargo capabilities even better together with a lower center of gravity for the rider
That's just a Benno Boost
Really! They just discovered a need for smaller bikes…In North America this is an underserved market. See what is available in Asia and Europe. How about a non electric version also?
Riese and muller was trying to make a cargo bike of their own but eventually... Failed. So they learned the lesson, now they start copying the perfect cargo bike - - - Tern GSD.
American ebikes are so behind, and this one also missed a lot of necessary accessories and like only one drive train and that engine pulling 20 Miles per hour is very frustrate having to go slow on a $5000 dollar ebike. I was curious of what they have come out but if you buy this you been ripoff by $2000. Is to bad they don't do a research as I have 2023 has many ebike outside the US much better for $5000. And much more elegant. Sorry Surly the true sometime hurts.
Battery on downtube sucks, that's where water belongs.
🤘🤡👍
Electric bikes are lame.
Only if you want to sweat.
Why? I mean, people say this all the time but never supply a valid reason.
@@chadmccullough3233 Replaces one poisonous extractive industry with another. $4800.
E-bikes are the single most important, and fastest growing, bike market on the planet. They're the best chance we have at turning the tide on climate change. They're the only means we have at transitioning car dependent societies to something sustainable. You're a knob. We need e-bikes.
@@cjohnson3836( Looks at actual bike )
You need to come up with big cargo bags too. Not everyone with a cargo bike is hauling kids.
