What is School Psychology?
School Psychology, a general practice of Health Service Psychology, is concerned with children, youth, families, and the schooling process. School psychologists are prepared to intervene at the individual and system levels and develop, implement and evaluate programs to promote positive learning environments for children and youth from diverse backgrounds, and to ensure equal access to effective educational and psychological services that promote health development.
What Do School Psychologists Do?
School psychologists provide direct support and interventions to students, consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals (i.e., school counsellors, school social workers) to improve support strategies, work with school administrators to improve school-wide practices and policies, and collaborate with community providers to coordinate needed services. They help schools successfully.
Role of a School Psychologist
A school psychologist’s job is to identify problems that create barriers to learning and coordinate efforts to resolve them. Their job responsibilities include the following:
Assessing students’ needs
Reviewing school processes
Consulting with parents and teachers
Observing students and how they’re learning
School psychologists provide direct support such as counselling, mentoring and guiding students. They also team up with teachers, school administrators, families, mental health professionals and others in the community.
School psychologists work with teachers and school administrators to improve educational practices. Sometimes school psychologists must identify learning, mental and behavioural disorders in students; they then establish plans to address those issues, often through collaboration with service providers.
What is the scope of a School psychologists career in the future?
The basic Salary of a School psychologists starts from Rs.25000 in government and KV and by increasing it reaches Rs. 50,000 to 60,000. In Private schools, the salary starts from 30-40K gradually increases.
The scope of a School psychologist is very good.
What are Job outlooks for School psychologists?
The job outlook is very promising for school psychology nationwide. It is believed that a significant proportion of current practitioners will reach retirement age within the next 10 years, hence opening the door for a new generation of school psychologists. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of psychologists is projected to grow 12% from 2012-2022, and one of the groups with the best job prospects will be those with specialist or doctoral degrees in school psychology.
What is the qualification required for School Psychology?
Masters in psychology (M.A, M.Sc)
1-year diploma in Guidance and Counselling
