Thank you for making his video, I am going to be graduating with my bachelors in psychology Fall 2021 and ive known I wanted to pursue a career in being a school counselor but I had no idea where to start, this has really helped me! :)
this was super insightful! Im currently in the process of changing my major at James Madison University in Virginia because I want to be a High school guidance counselor. Thanks so much!
you were the most helpful in the videos I've been looking at thanks.I am just starting school I'm 30 and going to start on my BA. trying to find out how to get my hours in before I finish my BA.mayby even find a job that will reimburse for collage.
I'm so sorry to hear that that was your experience. I sincerely hope my students do not think that of me and while I'm only one person, I hope these videos can be informative and help students beyond my high school. Perhaps if it's your'e calling you can become the counselor that you wished you had.
My school counciler asked me if I wanted her to call my parents or not about me being suicidal, I said NO but I walked home today to find out my mom had gotten a voicemail about me being suicidal. Came here to ask WHAT IS ADULT LOGIC AND WHY GAIN TEENAGERS TRUST JUST TO BREAK IT? 😐
@@Csc180 I can only imagine the frustration and the trust lost when you told your counselor confidential information only for that to be shared. Your feelings of betrayal are valid. @CosplayCounselor I was going to reply on something I just immediately forgot about it and now I can't remember what I was going to say because I suddenly started to tear up knowing if I hadn't have gotten so bold and made the tiktok vent that lead to the principle finding out and bringing me to the counciler then I would of never confessed all the times I tried doing sh or suicide and they wouldn't have had to call my mom. Hi!! I too cosplay and want to be a school counselor. I’ve been cosplaying for about 4 years but I am worried that cosplay will look unprofessional or inappropriate when it comes to getting a job. I’m worried some of my costumes are inappropriate. Have you run into any issues? Do schools frown upon it?
Hi there! That's so wonderful that you cosplay. I guess it depends on what you consider inappropriate. Some cosplays leave very little to the imagination whereas others may just be very form fitting. I would look at it in a similar context as what a model may face (in terms of lingerie, and/or more provocative outfits). Is this outfit something I can show to my parents/grandparents without blushing? If yes perhaps that context you should leave on private or share with a select audience. As for getting a counseling job I would focus on your skills as a competent counselor ie. how do you handle difficult parent? what is your level of proficiency in Aeries/Naviance etc? how do you guide a student who is failing all his/her courses? All counselors (and school employees) have hobbies outside of their roles and responsibilities, and cosplay can be one of them! I wouldn't feel ashamed; however, I do want you to be aware that there are some groups of people who just don't understand this sub-culture. You can choose to either educate them (some just think cosplay = hentai, which it isn't obviously), or you can ignore them. Best of luck on your counseling journey and I hope this was helpful!
Hi I’m currently in school to be elementary educator, but would love to go into doing counseling ? Would my degree help in anyway further me along in this?
That's wonderful that you want to be an elementary school counselor. Work hard to earn your bachelors and apply for graduate school in the Fall (of the year before you plan to attend school - just like high school to college). You've got this :)
Thank you for making this video! I have interest in pursuing School Counselor as my career someday, but is it okay of you have a degree in AB Behavioral Science?
Hello Chenzen. I'm glad you watched the video. At least in the United Stated you can major in anything for your bachelors and still be eligible to apply for your Masters in Counseling. I hope this helps!
what would you recommend students to major in for their bachelors? I’m currently thinking of psychology and education but I want to know which would be best in preparing you for the job!
When I entered my counseling program the vast majority of students were psychology majors; however, I would actually advocate for candidates to pick any major that can connect with counseling. For example I majored in both Business and Communication Studies in undergrad. I talked about how my organizational background taught me how to work with others in various setting and to target my services to those people. You can even go the language route - ie. Major in Spanish/Chinese/Korean etc and hopefully by that time you can talk about how you'd like to a counselor that services migrant families and/or families who's first language is not English. Think of what an area of study that can bring a different perspective to the classroom and I guarantee you that you will stand out among the applications. Hope this helps!
@@CosplayCounselor hi, so I’m graduating this spring with a bachelors in early childhood/childhood ed but now I’m thinking about becoming a guidance counselor. Do you believe this is appropriate?
Hi! I'm interested in being a high school counselor but I only have experience working with pre-school-aged children. I also have a BA in Psychology. Do you think my experience with pre-k kids will prevent me from getting into a grad program that specializes in high school counseling?
No, when you enter the grad program you will later identify what population you want to work with and hopefully get an internship with that age group. good luck!
I double majored in Sociology and Economics. I just received my Masters degree in Economics from FSU. I wanted to become a counselor in New York. Is this sufficient?
Hi Carly. Thanks for your patience. If you'd like to work at a public elementary, middle or high school in the US you'll need to complete the school counseling certification process which usually means you'll need to do your Masters in Counseling, Internship, possible testing etc in the US. The US currently does not have reciprocity agreements with other countries. If you'd like to be a school counselor at a private school they do not have a strict criteria as public institutions. Hope this helps!
Hi just came across your video. You mentioned that you went to school in New York. Was it online? If so did you have to travel to New York to do your internship? Or were you able to do it in California?
I have an art therapy bachelor's and 2 years experience as a drug and alcohol counselor. If I take the 5421 praxis for professional school counseling, could I get certified still? Or must I have a masters?
For public schools you will need to have a Masters in Counseling and complete your internship hours to be eligible. Private schools may have different criteria and a bachelors might be sufficient.
In the past (like 15 years ago) I remember one intern adviser had a social work degree, but I think she was grandfathered in to qualify as a school counselor. I'm not sure about that now; however, I think it's more about having the PPS credential. Hope this helps!
Thank you for watching. I think part of it is representation. You don’t see many male counselors in the school so it’s possible students don’t want to be a minority in that profession. A second possibility may be because many people don’t know what a counselor does so they pursue what they know. You make a great point in comparing it to a life coach/ mentor. What do you think?
It depends on the state and school. Many private schools (like Christian schools, or independent privates) do not require a credential for individuals to serve as counselor at their institutions. If you plan to work at a public K-12 school with the classification as a Guidance Counselor or School Counselor then you must have a credential from the state you wish you work in. There are some positions within a state that have counseling responsibilities but do not require a credential. If the position is called specialist or tech then you may do overlapping roles but are not required the credential. I hope this helps!
What career would you be interested to learn more about next?
How long would doing all this take?
@@hadiaamini9479 In the ideal world: 4 years undergrad, 2 years grad school then you magically land a job after graduation.
I go to therapy, a therapist told me I should be a guidance counselor.
