- The most glorious Art Nouveau synagogue in Europe was created in Szabadka, Hungary, now Subotica in Serbia. The Jewish community was established in 1775, and grew to over 6000, needing a new synagogue. In the late 19th century a competition for a new synagogue in Szeged, Hungary produced two clear winners, one of which, the team of Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab, both from Budapest, produced a Secession style building in its Hungarian nationalist form. Completed in 1902, cost overruns required using inferior materials in some cases, leading to the building's deterioration after WWII. All 6000 Jews were taken to Auschwitz during WWII, and the building fell into disuse. The building was completely restored in 2018, using local and international funds. The music is supplied by a Hungarian Klezmer band.
Beautiful! And exceptionally beautiful music.
Thanks. The music comes from The Odessa Klezmer Band, a Budapest group worth looking into. This, the Synagogue in Szeged, and the Great Synagogue on Dohany street in Budpest, are the most beautiful Synagogues in Europe. The first two, in the Hungarian Secessionist style, have stylistic similarities with public buildings in the Hungarian empire, like the town halls in Kiskunfelegyhaza, Marosvasarely (Târgu Mures, Romania) and in Subotica itself. I am so happy these buildings have been renovated and are still in use.
