In 1983 Brenda Fassie formed "Brenda and the Big Dudes", and that same year she had a breakthrough hit with "Weekend Special," singing in the disco-flavored "bubblegum" style. "Weekend Special" sold over 200,000 copies and had an extended life in cover versions and remixes, including one by New York producer Van Gibbs in 1986 that spent eight weeks on Billboard magazine's Hot Black Singles chart. The song's international success led to a Fassie tour of the United States, Europe, Australia, and Brazil.
Concert held at Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg on the 12th January 1985 in aid of Operation Hunger.

I am a 68 year old Muslim Indian, I have to agree Brenda was special.
NO TWITTER NO HASH TAGS NO Facebook BUT STILL GOT A FULL STADIUM...... BRENDA IS A LEGEND
victor ndazamo yes! Pure talent
Spot on bra. What a special lady !
She was indeed a legend. I hate drugs and curse wherever they come from.
I don't she was the only artist performing on this day
Say that again. Unlike bo Cassper. This is just incredible....
I was there. One of my favorite songs ever. Miss my homeland.
I'm so jealous 😢
This is the concert that shook South Africa and helped bring on the collapse of. apartheid. Producer Hilton Rosenthal made sure all races could attend. And they did. Peacefully. Many SA greats like Johnny Clegg who were also anti-apartheid activists performed. Johnny and Sipho in Juluka sang Johnny’s Scatterlings, both a great lecture on human origins and an anti-apartheid anthem. Shortly after this Johnny wrote Asimbonanga, which many consider the greatest of the anti-apartheid anthems. And Brenda would go on to do her Black President because a few years after this earthquake of a concert, Mandela was released. This concert helped change the world.
MaBrrrrrrr 💃
I was there. First timme I ever attended a music festival. Didn't want it to end 😂
How I wish I was born in that time to see her perform
I cry when it gets to 3:03 what a time,what a talent, what a loss .
Whoever came up with that bass line is a legend for life.
His name is David Mabaso, He's the only one that's still alive in the video. He is from Soweto.
I feel that bass my friend🥰
@@unity_ptaDamn all the other Big Dudes have passed? 😢
His rent was due 🤞🏽🫡
The guy playing the bass is killing me. He deserves some award, he's playing from the heart
jack golden its either her baby daddy or the late Sammy klaas.they were great. and one of her back up singers is her sister.
you stink
It's true.
Its David Mabaso recently honoured by Yvonne Chaka Chaka with an award, the only surviving member of The Big Dudes.
gee, she could fill a stadium, awesome!
Even in 1985!
her and 23 other acts.
I was a year old
I think this is from Concert in the Park.
Ofc she could she is a legend
When the world was natural 💃
My wife and I have fond memories of attending football and rugby games at Ellis Park Stadium in JHB 🇿🇦 but our favourite visit is when we attended a Big Five live concert in the early 90’s featuring artists like Lucky Dube and Yvonne Chaka Chaka and when Brenda performed there was this intense rapture like emotion that spread across the field. Thank you for the memories BF, my African Queen! ❤️
The bass guitar its onpoint
My parents are somewhere in that crowd but, they did not know each other then.
LOL
😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Lol, how do you know that they were there. Did they tell you.😅
Brenda walked so that artists of today could climb. Filling up a stadium with no social media influence and especially with the circumstances of the time!
Forever our Queen ❤
Words well said bru
🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
She was a legend, and needs more appreciation. Today's artists do not come near to this
Wow! I am a South African living in the states and this makes me miss South Africa and my people. This brings back so many good childhood memories because Brenda was a constant in my home growing up. At end of year Brenda would release an album and everyone in the country would dance to it.
come home Bruh
Am in London but from Cape Town
@@goldenstar9379 let's switch places for a couple of months lol
virgo Yea we can do it .
I'm in Cape Town just watching raw talent and the power of her voice. Sending love to you guy please keep safe
What an artist she was!!!❤❤ Even whem she sings on stage, her voice is the same as when its was recorded in studio. Usually, musical artists' voices sound different on stage. Brenda was that unique...oh what a beast she was. Rest In Power, mama. You are loved❤❤❤
the bass player is kiling it...she was a huge star
Brenda fassie was really blessed. Not only was she an incredible performer who knew how to captivate an audience but she was really talented too. That combination is very rare.
Imagine that the stadium is just to see her, she was special jndeed
True...
@@thembinkosidube3918 so special. Why did she take her life? We needed her.
She could have packed us in that stadium every weekend.
A very special flower to us South Africans!
True,We miss her...
The frequency modulation (FM) synthesis of the legendary Yamaha DX7 on stage in the 80s ! This thing was a BEASSSSSSST of a synthesizer, and to this day, I bought ONE off eBay to keep as a souvenir becuz NOTHING sounds like it !!!
I am thinking of doing a tribute to Brenda with this song... Simple The Best. From Mozambique to South Africa with Love
Moçambique é nós
Frightened ffn fool, too far to drive to see this performance,... lost a moment in history. Blessings for hope in in our sadbad lost paradise.😢🥰❤️👋🏽✊🏾🙏🏽
The Legendary Brenda Fassie, WE Missss YOU 🇿🇦
Salute 😔
Who can't get over this in 2021 still?
Those people that rely on social media to fill up a stadium, here's one person that did not have social media and still filled a packed stadium, now that's talent.
I loved Brenda's singing and personality. She would make the entire stadium lively. Brenda had it as far as the music and entertainment is concerned. Even Europeans appreciated her. I heard many talking if her. We miss you but your spirit lives on. R.I.P.
When Talent spoke louder than anything in the music industry
Such talent this young lady had 😘
Tunino R. Haskell and that was 1983/4
At 03:45 it proved that the crowd was very excited and happy. Brenda you were and still the best in South Africa.
Correct, she was a crowd puller
Brenda was a character 😂😂 she blessed us with her beautiful talent
I miss ..........YOU.......,BUT I AM THANKFUL , for treating me as your blood brother ,when I stayed at your home, for almost two years & I shall seek out bongani soon .,,,,for your'sake,
I hope you seeked out Bongani
Here in July 2021..Just want to say The vibe and Brenda is incredible for me. And to have such a huge crowd at an era before the internet and smartphones. This is huge. I'm sure some people who wanted to get in couldn't get in. Given stadium capacity of 62000 plus people standing in the field could be between 8k to 10k,thus like 70K capacity.. Legendary
2021 still listening to her music
From Ghana 🇬🇭
That's what you call a performance. Natural and from the heart
They trying to make a movie about her? I watched the first 5 seconds of this video and i had already decided that no one can act this out, no one
Sho madjozi is my pick
Yeah because she was hella talented 😍
I’m so addicted to this woman even in 2017. So upset I never got to see her. Sorry to all those born before Brenda Fassie times🙁
Damn Brenda used to rock the entire full stadium😍😍😍 This was back in 1985. I was just few years old 😎❤️👍
South African’s one of the best artist 😍 Include Yvonne Chaka Chaka & others 😍 Man I miss those days
...damn! That bass is killer for 1985!!!!

Bass in the 70's and 80's was really killer!!! Many songs were bass line driven
Steve, not only for 1985, for all time!!! That Baseline is sick

She was the best of her kind

This is so amazing, the energy of Brenda, the band, the bass!! How she improvises on the lyrics and gets the audience totally engaged!.. Just love it.. Puts a smile on my face every time (and gets me moving hahaha)
Elllis Park is sold out!! No cd. Just raw music from full band. 80s were the best when it comes to music. Brenda was just talented ,,unlike the the artists of today.
