      It's strange that people think that astronauts flying out in space is going to see more life that is alien to us, than what is right within our own planet, in our oceans. The web says more than 80% of the ocean is unexplored, and another quote says that less than 5% of the ocean has been explored. Plenty of creatures in the ocean, look other-worldly and many are intelligent.

      The maps with illustrations on them were usually maps that hung on some rich guy's wall and the were usually just fluff cartographers added to either illustrate "I don't actually fuckin' know what's out here so here's a monster to represent danger" or just simply as eye candy that fills in empty space.
      If it was a map that was going to be used for an actual expedition, the space would be filled with more useful information.

      Lol! Seems that not one commenter in this thread is aware that Dr Edie Widder was part of the team that took the first footage of a giant squid 10 years ago in Japan.
      All footage of Giant squid in it's natural habitat has been courtesy of Dr Edie Widder, except for the dead and dying specimens washed up on beaches. As for the New Zealand footage , that wasn't a true giant squid.

    • @crystalm4324
      @crystalm4324 3 года назад +3

      @@graphite2786 - yes actually I’m VERY aware, I watched the whole thing in Japan with baited breath. That’s why I said “One” of the first - and certainly the most undeniable proof of a TRULY GIANT SQUID!
      The Japanese team’s footage was extremely fleeting and it could easily, and was by some, be explained away as a overlarge Humbolt.
      It’s literally a 3 second flash of tentacles in weeks of footage, with zero reference for size. Several Biologists looked at it and all came up with varying conclusions.
      Then there was that small one at the surface that I believe came up with the special baited hooks (I could be wrong with that one forgive me) that they dissected in New Zealand. - it’s where the giant tank with the preserved body of another actual giant squid is located - they did a live dissection of the new one and had a new tank made up for it.
      My point about this Lady being “One of the First” and certainly THE BEST - is that she looked at what had been done previously and realized it’s the equivalent of stomping through a forest wondering why you don’t see any animals!
      So she invented an unobtrusive lure that simply acts like a normal large Jellyfish - knowing that small squid love to eat jellyfish, and drawing the conclusion that bigger squid like bigger jelly’s!
      Then she put a quiet camera using light that most deep sea creatures can’t see and let it float around - and she got footage on the first trip! Not only that she also equipped a laser size reference to leave ZERO DOUBT.

      People seem to forget that ships during the colonial period were no longer than a few dozen meters. The Godspeed which brought some of the first settlers to jamestown in 1607 is not much bigger than a modern day small fishing boat. So a giant squid attacking a wooden ship in that time would have been terrifying to the crew aboard. In the game Sea of Thieves, the largest ship in it is only 15 meters long. So yeah, kraken attacks did occur, but the squids involved were not the size of battleships. Man made things were simply smaller back then, and the creatures were the same size then as they are now. What maybe small to us now was TITANIC to our ancestors.

    That's not what most people think of when you say "two story house" however.

    I have reason to believe the giant squid is, in fact, the Kraken itself, as well as its big cousin the colossal squid. I believe the legendary beast was inspired by sightings of giant squid back then. But from what I've heard, these big fellas aren't dangerous to humans at all, they're quite calm around humans and even curious! As for how that Geronimo yacht was "attacked", I don't think the squid meant any harm. In fact, it's very rare for giant squids to be on the surface. I believe that squid was either caught on the yacht or just mistook it for like food.
    As for my theory involving the truth of the Kraken, there's always the tiny chance there's something bigger than a giant squid....

    itss still too small to be "the kraken" but it looks like squids can grow a lot... maybe if you give it time then this one will get bigger and bigger. and the question is how? normally squids and octopuses after mating commit suicide. this mean 1-2 years max. in this time they cant grow a lot. so maybe this large one somehow didnt mate yet or it has a genetic failure which allows it to overcome the "suicide program" which means that it can live for a very long time and grow. who knows for how long.

    • @thegreyworldwalker8882
      @thegreyworldwalker8882 3 года назад

      @Alex Smith Yes, but the thing is, we literally know almost nothing about these things! Nothing. The blue whale is the largest (that we know of), who's to say the giant or Colossal Squid doesn't get bigger, the ones we keep seeing are MASSIVE and for all we know their just regular members of their species... not anything special. Also count the legend of the Kraken, the size of that thing. That monster, real, fake, related or not is legendary for destroying ships and killing whole crews of men, and this animal is the closest thing to THAT, if it is in fact NOT THAT. No one knows how big they get, how long they live, their growth cycle or anything. So yes, this animal as it stands, has the potential to to be larger than a blue whale. And it makes EVEN MORE sense if you count the legend of Moby Dick. The Great White Whale, Essentially a gigantic white Sperm whale that sank a ship. Keep in mind, Sperm whales are known to prey on giant Squid. So we either have these two Titans of Their species, or a predator-prey relationship on a whole new scale.

      @@thegreyworldwalker8882 No giant squid is near the size of a blue whale. Blue whales can grow to over 150 tons while the giant squid is only around 1,000 lbs. With such a great difference it is extremely unlikely one can reach 300,00 lbs.
      An animal larger than a blue whale can exist however we won't find one that is much larger. Animals have a size limit on how large an individual can get. Blue whales are not at that limit but they are near it.
      There are a few reasons for this maximum size. One freason is larger animals need a great amount of energy to survive. At a certain size they cannot get enough food to meet the calorie requirements needed.
      Another reason is that at some point an animal cannot gain enough muscle to function. This is because volume increases faster than surface area. Basically at a given mass no amount of muscle could keep up with the increased volume.
      Now if you are talking about length then that would be the siphonophore which is 150 feet long. So like with the blue whale it is extremely unlikely we will find a giant or colossal squid in that length range since so far out of all the specimens discovered (nearly 700) 46 feet was the longest.
