Hey! Coming from a yarn store owner, the yarn industry is (imo) small enough that deciding not to use super wash does make a big difference! I have barely any super wash in my store (the exception is some of my sock yarns) and I would absolutely be more financially "successful" if I sold more super wash. The customers I have that appreciate non super wash have a huge impact on how often I can order from small farms and small companies. Superwashing also takes away so many of the best qualities of natural wool. Plus (laundry mishaps aside, I totally get that) natural wool items will last so much longer and look fresher for so much longer than super wash. After a few years, my few super wash items look pretty ratty and old even after careful hand washing. Anyway, I found your channel recently and I appreciate that you talked about it!

I agree about longevity mattering. I think it’s not different from when I have bought storage containers like the ones behind you made of plastic and not wood sure wood would be better for the earth but if I am gonna keep it for the rest of my life or at least decades instead of buy something new each time I get bored and it makes it in budget versus not having storage I’m gonna do it. I own almost every fiber item I ever made unless it was a gift and I’ve been into fiber crafts since 2009 I use them all. I don’t make things I won’t use or if I do then I frog it and make something else. I use acrylic and other fibers without shame, for many years it was all I had access to or knew and those pieces have gotten decades of use and will continue to. I don’t see why yarn is the category I need to save the planet with…I focus more on clothes, food waste, household cleaning items, paper products and other places. They don’t bring me joy either way so it’s easier to do what just better for the planet but I refuse to buy my crafts which I don’t consume in excess in a way that doesn’t feel good but that’s just me. If I love it, I use it and I wear it. That is all.

And to the deep deep love of james n watts! I think most of my next knits I have yarn for are their patterns.

I started spinning partially so that I could have the spincycle, slow color-changes in non-super wash wool (and for a better price) - happy spinning! There's so much exciting non-superwash wool out there :)

I really appreciate your ted talk on superwash wool! It was an ignorant bliss; I knew that superwash wool wasn't the best, but I didn't know it was THAT bad. I'm going to make a bigger effort to not buy superwash yarn anymore. I defo need to do research on alternatives for sock yarn. I'm not perfect, but I think one person making an effort is better than none. Thank you for the clarity!

Ditto to all of this! There are options out there… finding them can be hard

Hello and hi!!! so glad you're talking about superwash! I've been thinkin about this too, but i struggle with the "necessary evil" bit. like, for items that get a ton of wear & you want to be able to easily wash without felting (ex: socks, hats) I feel like superwash is really the best in terms of longevity of the item... i've accidentally felted sooo many non-superwash things. i feel like superwash is best for gift knits too, it helps avoid tragedy with accidental felting or giving someone an item they won't realistically be able to care for. longevity vs. sustainability, feels like there isn't a way to win!!!!!

Yeah that’s so fair! Everyone gets to make their own mind up about what they’re interested in making with and why. I have never felted an item, nor do I give gift knits, so we have different concerns about our knitted items! I do believe that the longevity of superwash is a bit of a myth though, good quality, well taken care of NSW can last just as long! :)

Oooh I know exactly what you're talking about with Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. It hit my like a freaking freight train and I honestly had to put the book down and take a break for a couple days. I was so devastated, but I can't hate Gabrielle Zevin for doing it because even though she broke my heart, she did it so beautifully. Congrats on your spinning improving, it looks great!

Hello!! If you're looking for things to spin with I would also check out e-spinners! You can get a 3d printed e-spinner from dreaming robots for like $125. I raise this because I went the traditional spinning wheel route and while it is beautiful (and I found a good deal on craigslist for mine) I didn't realize how expensive parts (like bobbins, drive bands etc) could be. If I had known that I would have forgone aesthetics and gone down the 3d printed route to save $$. Of course do whatever makes you happiest! But I wanted to share some wisdom I wish I knew when picking out my spinning tool 😅
