I have exoshield windshield film on my model 3. I have zero distortion or orange peels on my film. After 2 years of use, I don’t have significant scratches on the film because I applied high grade ceramic coating on it and I use a silicone wiper. There are some scratches from the installation process, but ceramic coating was able to minimize the appearance of some of the scratches. I would rather deal with the imperfections of windshield films than to deal with glass replacement every few years.

I also have the same product on my model Y. Again, it’s not perfect, but I rather replace the film every 4-5 years rather than replacing the windshield.

I have Exoshield on my Model Y also and it’s a similar experience. It’s helped with some good sized pebbles hitting and only causing damage to the film and the windshield being ok, but that’s it. It looks terrible after a couple years, both inside and out. When I first got it done there was a haze look (not sure if similar to your orange peel look) but it’s just gone downhill since. Almost paid to get it done on my 3, but decided to hold off and I’m so glad I did.

I'm really enjoying the view out of my window since I removed it. It's the small things in life.

Sounds like Carbyne Motorsport is a crap company to get work done - did not want to disclose what product they used and basically told you to f-off with their suggestion about polish, which they knew would not work. I will avoid them!

I am paying much higher insurance now because I had to replace two windshields on two cars in 5 years in South Carolina. No deductible though! Both were claims exceeding $1000 and both are on my record for 7 years counting as high cost claims. The increase in insurance is higher than if I had gotten a DUI. Absolutely insane and inexplicable to me since both were caused by events beyond my control.

It is ironic that we all have insurance and yet are afraid to actually make a claim.

Well darn, I was hoping to hear better things about windshield protection. I bought a used 1995 Lexus LS 400 in great shape except the windshield was pitted and had one chip that had been repaired. Less than 3 weeks ago, a rock hit the windshield on the highway and before I even got home, the crack traveled from the top to the bottom of the windshield. Insurance covered the replacement, but yesterday it got struck again. I was lucky, except today, yet another rock hit, and this time, I wasn't lucky. Small chip and the start of a crack. Immediately had it repaired for almost $200 today. I can't keep using insurance to replace it, so what options do I have? I don't think changing my route to use back roads and add an extra 30 min commute is the answer.

Your insurance rates are about to go up as well. I don't have any good advice for ya.

Don't these protection films have self healing properties?
And, as another commenter said, a ceramic coating will make it more slippery therefore will reduce scratches.
Whatever minor scratches are left will disappear under self healing.

Mine prevented rock chips and cracks for 5 years, but yeah… ended up super scratched, ruining the visual quality making it dangerous. It’s a trade off I guess. I even tried polishing the film which didn’t help very much.

Like those plastic carpet runners that turn yellow after a few years. Sure, you protected the carpet, but it looks ugly as hell.
