In the UK it doesn't matter if you're at the local clinic or at the doctors even with appointment paper work from the NHS, your attendance will be screwed especially if you have physically or mental problems that require annual, monthly or weekly appointments.
Senior year I was having so many physical and mental issues, and wasn’t able to wake up on time. So I’d come in a few min early at least 2 times a week. I was going to have to do summer school to graduate if I missed much more. The staff liked me so I was allowed to bring in notes to be excused absences. I think I’m total I had like 13 I excused and 25 excused for the 3rd quarter. Then Covid hit, which was actually amazing. I didn’t have to go anymore.
Hey Mike, My school dose this with absents We are given a certain amount of days we are allowed to miss per class, but even if we had to miss school if we like broke a bone or something wild like that it’ll count as an absents even with a doctors note

Asking for a doctor’s not violates HIPAA too, you can’t actually coerce people with a unexcused absence to give you medical documents. You only tell if they’re not genuine if there’s a pattern or blatant discrepancies in their story
It doesn't violate HIPAA because you, the patient, requested it from your doctor. All the note says was that you were at an appointment at their office at a certain time and is printed on their letterhead with their contact info. You authorized the release of that information by requesting the letter, hence not a violation of HIPAA

That's not how HIPAA works. The school is not a medical entity. They require the note but the note doesn't have to have more than the name of the clinic, date/time, student's name, and a signature of any employee in the clinic. They are not checking the actual medical record of the student.

I unfortunately have to skip a lot of school because of medical issues. My principal was made aware of my health issues before I started going and was made aware I'd likely have to skip often which helped so much. I also try to make sure not to abuse this grace because it could ruin things in the future.
My Dad died suddenly when I was in high School and I didn't have to go to class for the rest of the year so I just played video games with the resource teachers (it was towards the end of the year) The principla was super chill and was basically like "she's not going to be able to focus anyway so why make her try" and just let me play video games all day. He was great.

I’d also see if the school can do special arrangements if you have to be absent for a wicked long time. Had to have special arrangements with doing some homeschooling due to being in recovery from a knee surgery when I was 11.

It was the teachers first year. She didn't know you could fight it.

Remind the teacher as much as you can. They won't care and most likely won't even believe you if you don't deal with it as it happens. Make sure you talk to some councilors as well.
My schools new attendance policy makes excused absences not matter at all, doesn’t matter if you have a doctors note. To many absences and they can fail you, the “excused” absences just make them consider if they should fail you or not. If you have a 60 with 11 absences (10 being the limit you can miss before being failed) with 10 of them being excused they will fail you.
By the time I was a Senior in high school, I was a mom and living on my own so I had to write my own notes. It was wild. If I was sick, it was excused. If my son was sick, too bad. Eventually I talked with all my teachers and they said if I knew I was going to be absent then just give them notice and they'd excuse it. I tried not to abuse the privilege and everything worked out fine. 😊
One time my attendance secretary wouldn't excuse my absence but I literally provided my temporary drivers permit that had said the issue date was that days date and 3 emails from the DVM. One said I had an appointment that morning, one saying I checked in, and one saying thanks for going to the DMV here is the digital copy of your permit but my mom had to call to prove all 4 pieces of evidence were real. 😭🤦
Man I skipped school a lot, but it's also because my state passed a law that basically prohibits schools from taking action against the students for skipping. Apart of some mental health awareness program. Glad we have it to be honest.
