This sing brought Aerosmith back from the dead. I was a Aerosmith fan before this, but they were done by this time. I personally am not a fan of the Aerosmith music when they made the comeback, but they would not have had the comeback if not for Run DMC.

This was the first "notable" big collaboration that was big on MTV at the time. By doing an old Aerosmith song it not only brought hip-hop and Run-DMC to the mainstream but it also revived Aerosmith's career being that they were in a [almost] decade long dry spell.

@@richardlacey4923 Aerosmith was nowhere before this video/song was released. After this there was renewed interest in them and they went on to become more famous than they were in the 70's.
That’s because they were busy partying and blowing money...not because they couldn’t produce any music, they could go into the studio at anytime and get high on the charts!
"Walk This Way" is a song by Aerosmith. Written by Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, the song was originally released as the second single from the album, Toys In The Attic (1975).

real story is,,, RUN DMC was "rappin" on walk this way 70's version , they were rappin on the musical part from the begginning and the never heard the vocal ....
they wanted to make their OWN version of the song , but some manager asked DMC to try something with aerosmiths, at start they never wanted to make a DUO with aerosmiths ,,,

Thanks to Jam Master Jay for push the two others into this and thanks to Joey and Stephen for allowing it and joining in. This song saved Aerosmith and launched Run DMC into mainstream. It might also have lead to Run DMC's demise, but hey they all got paid. R.I.P. Jam Master Jay

Exactly!! I saw Aerosmith back in the 80's and Guns and Roses opened for them and they blew Aerosmith of the stage!! Steven sounded horrible! But then again they were both hooked on MR. BROWNSTONE at the time. There managers ended up separating the two bands while on the road.

@@tomh5006 Yeah, part of the reason for seperation was that Izzy Stradlin (Rhythm guitar, backing vocalsused & co-lyricist) used to be Aerosmith's drugdealer before Guns made it big. They suspected he was still selling to them.
I remember growing up in the 80's and hearing this song. It blew everyone's minds. No one heard anything like this. The way it just flowed was mesmerizing. It blew up so big everybody knew this song back then.
This a old school classic right here hip hop legends and rock legends together on one track. the original was aerosmith song before the collab.
Aerosmith had already had a long career, with many hits, before the hook-up with Run-DMC. They had also been through a split, intervention rehab and reunion, and their career needed a reboot. A-smith soared after this, and Run-DMC was okay for a while, until Jay had his very bad night at the studio, RIP. The End.

This was 1986. First real colab of rock and hip hop. Great to see 2 legendary groups. Beastie Boys had a rock sound on alot...but this was a true mash up. Nice ya noticed the shell tops. Lol.. Great reaction. Stay safe

to me.. one of the best collaborations ever... One thing ppl don't notice...It's all Joe Perry on the guitar... just amazing. Even though this is an original song from Aerosmith in the 70's ... the remake with Run DMC... put Aerosmith back one the map in the 90's.
This was a ground breaking song in history to bring these two opposites together and make one of my favorites. This was the first collaboration and it was brilliantly done! The video was amazing and the appearance at the concert was crazy. They're unique sounds together was perfect
I remember watching this on MTV for the 1st time in the 80s it was huge the 1st time rap and rock came together and that started it all. There is a documentary of the making of this very good.
As a high schooler at the time this was the first collab with rock/rap and it gave us as children a doorway to our parents groups and say "see dad, aerosmith is playing with run d mc"
It helped the rap industry solidify its genre and brought it more mainstream. It just plain opened doors for so many people and groups to come in the future.

Opened me up to rap. I'd loved the song back in the 70s, but this was sooooo much better
Even in white middle class suburbia when RunDMC came out with their first tape everyone wanted it. It was like top priority on your christmas list. The only problem was that this was one of the first tapes to ever come out that you had to be a certain age to buy it because it contained explicit lyrics. So if you were a kid and you're parents didn't approve...you were gonna be shit out of luck.

This was a game changer right here. I mean Areosmith with Run - DMC. It doesn't get any better than this 🔥🔥🔥🎸🎸🎸 This was the first of its kind. Rock-N-Rap and it sounded great. One of my favorite videos of all time.

EPIC album, I still own a physical copy.
This was the first collab I had ever heard. Actually, it was the first rap I had ever heard. It was odd to me. To suddenly hear "Walk This Way" being done by someone I did not recognize with a sound I did not recognize was quite unique. And then to hear Aerosmith coming in for the chorus? What a treat it was. Loved it from day one. When I finally saw the music video, (Dad wouldn't let us have cable or MTV), I was officially hooked on this song.
In the 70's, there was an article written about foul lyrics in rock n roll. They quoted Walk This Way as being how music should be. Nice and wholesome...
Steven Tyler said obviously they didn't get the meaning of "You ain't seen nothin till you're down on a muffin." and yes Asia, hey diddle diddle with a Kittie in the middle is exactly what you thought it was. Aerosmith was my first concert \m/

Tyler also recognised it took more creativity to use metaphors than just explicit language.

I am 50 years old. I was a teenager when they did this collaboration and I remember the next day… EVERYONE was talkin about it. It was the first collaboration and it set forth a great relationship between blacks and whites from where I was from. I’m from South Louisiana. It was the best thing we had all seen in a long time. Brought blacks and whites together significantly. I’ll never forget the day I witnessed the together on MTV.

If you love rock n rap mixed you will love the Judgement Night soundtrack, lots of hip hop and rap artists paired with metal, grunge bands etc. Run-DMC do a track called Me, Myself and My microphone with Living Colour. Pairings like Slayer and Ice-t, Cypress Hill and Sonic Youth the whole album is fire!
My fave being 'Another Body Murdered' - Faith No More and Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E.

RUN-DMC mixed rap and rock two years earlier with a track called Rock Box on their first LP.
As far as I know it was the first collaboration, Anthrax and Public Enemy was a few years later. Thier song "Bring the noise" was lit also. 🔥

Greatest concert I ever attended, June 1988 - Run DMC, Public Enemy, Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and EPMD.
Classic Steven Tyler lyrics. This was the song that saved the band and probably saved their lives it brought them to the forefront again. I was fortunate enough to see them tour together and it was amazing
This song was a number one hit for Aerosmith 10 years before they used it with Run DMC Def Jam records at this time was selling records but not a lot so Rick Rubin, who you probably know the name he’s a famous producer. He was their producer at the time they needed to get some kind of to push them out into the mainstream so they got together with Aerosmith and Aerosmith brought run DMC and hip-hop into the mainstream with this song right here. At this time, the Beastie Boys were riding a lot of run DMC’s lyrics and then Run DMC took it upon themselves to write their own lyrics and here we are. and yes, this is the first collaboration between a hip-hop or rap group and a rock ‘n’ roll group like I said before it in my comment, the Aerosmith brought run DMC into the mainstream, and therefore hip-hop went into the mainstream, so it all boils back to run DMC and Aerosmith pushing it out into the main stream.

I know one of the fellas from Run DMC passed away and Steven Tyler was at his funeral and gave them mad props for helping Aerosmith to gain popularity again

Yes this was evolutionary the first of its kind. two separate genres at the top of their game collaborating . Its Aerosmith's song and lyrics and to have Run DMC spit their lyrics was/is tight.
This song was released in 1986 (it's 35 YEARS OLD!) and is probably the oldest rap/rock collaboration featuring artists that were this well known.

For your question. It was the first big rap/rock collab. Two years before this Chaka Kahn did a collab with Melle Mel for the song "I Feel For You".
Walk this way was the 3rd track off Toys in the Attic. DJs used the intro as a loop without getting to the lyrics. Their producer come up with this idea and Jam Master Jay loved it.

Sooooo crazy to me so many younger folks havent heard this. It was the first time rock and rap ever hooked up. Some of Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) is the closets things we had to rap. ha.....and honestly back then, a LOT of folks was NOT happy that Aerosmith did this. Good for both of em. This was originally an Aerosmith song from the 70's that they remade with Run DMC in 86'.
This song brought hip hop out of the city to the suburbs and beyond. It was really a genius idea by Run DMC.

It's a classic for sure. I remember when it came out. I listen to all types of music my whole life and I've always played 3 instruments and sang since 4th grade and music has always been my escape. When these 2 giants came together it started something that couldn't be contained. I remember me and my best friend destroying his dads record collection trying to learn how to scratch on a regular record player...lol. My folks gave me their old record collection as a kid and it had everything in it fom "Jam on it" to Heart to Van Halen to Chuck Berry, Ozzy Osbourne, to Charlie Daniels. I used to carry around a suitcase style record player that had 2 6×9 speakers that you could detach and stretch across the room until i got my classic duel cassette deck boom box that took a shit load of D batteries or plugged in of course and had the old school equalizer across the front with the giant microphone plug and everyone carried around a piece of cardboard to throw down anywhere to breakdance on. Classic !!! I even got to see Aerosmith in the late 90s in Biloxi, Mississippi with my next door neighbor, it was amazing. 2 hot chicks were making out next to me the whole show...bad ass...lol.
This collaboration might’ve been the spark for a funk-metal genre. One band that stayed true to funk rock since the 70’s is Mother’s Finest. They even toured with ACDC and I hope people rediscover Mother’s Finest too.

Yep!! This was a remake of an Aerosmith clssic Rock and this vid revolutionized and opened up airwaves open to hip hop!!
This is what got run DMC into the rock n roll hall of fame one of only 6 rappers and the first in......so yeah they were Trend setters.
At the time rappers would sample rock without paying royalties especially if they were part of the same record label, so this was a big deal because run DMC gave the rock group the recognition and it got Aerosmith back in the public light after a few really bad years. So showed that both could Benefit.
I believe it was the first rock/rap collaboration, but not the only to mix rock and rap. The Beastie Boys were the first to group to mix the two sounds regularly. Their songs No Sleep til Brooklyn and Fight for Your Right came out the same year as this song did.

A bunch of people have mentioned that this song was an Aerosmith song already. I'd also suggest listening to Run-DMC's earlier song, "Rock Box", where they integrated some heavy rock guitar into their own rap song. (I believe the guitar was played by studio guitar wizard Eddie Martinez).

Yes it was first collaboration between the two genres. When Steven heard that there was a hip hop group sampling “ this way” he was pissed. Then when the managers and executives got them to meet at the studio and bam it was Magic. My brother was in college and he said that when this version was released that it made it okay for blacks and whites to jam together and listen to music in different genres. Blacks didn’t think they’d enjoy rock and whites hip hip/rap but they did. Both group members have gave interviews and they all said the same.

Apparently, RUN-DMC were working with this particular Aerosmith song. When Aerosmith found out, they were P!$$3D. After some Talking they agreed to do a remix with RUN-DMC. It really was magic.

This was a successful collaboration in all senses. Run DMC was a big act, but mostly in the rap genre. Aerosmith HAD been a big act, but were struggling due to band strife, drug use, etc. This huge hit relaunched Aerosmith's career and catapulted Run DMC into crossover territory. MTV was the vehicle; it might not have been possible without the video to go with it. It was genius. It is popular news fodder to discuss racial division, but we are really closer than we've ever been to the society we have only dreamt about. Keep the faith.
right on, the video was an essential piece of the success of this recording. it's such a seminal moment in music history it should be taught about in schools, not just music schools. super important.
I've always thought that Hip Hop blew up when Break Dancin did, because that dance craze was a phenomenon across racial lines and all these movies about it started poppin up and those movies had soundtracks featuring these great artists like Run DMC, Cool Mo Dee, Ice T, etc. Suddenly that music was everywhere. Keep in mind, I lived in a small New England city known for it Rockwellian influence, and it wasn't until breakin hit that Hip Hop really permeated even my neck of the woods.
Listening to Run's interview talking abput their apprehension to doing this song is hillarious in retrospect, because this song was so popular at the time.

The rumor I heard was, in the 70's Aerpsmith was a hit. Then they fell into a drug addiction hole for a while and popularity went down. Then in the early 80s they were working on coming back. Run DMC were fans, having listened to Aerosmith growing up. Run was popular and reached out to Aerosmith offering to do a collaboration to help make them hip with a younger audience, I guess it worked :)
RUN D.M.C. and LL Cool J were among the biggest trend setters in fashion in the 80s. Kango hats and Adidas were 2 of the biggest. Reminds me. Since you are on this old school trip you should watch some LL Cool J
