Hey now...86 isn't late 80's. I'm a mid 40's GenXer and every year is starting to count my friend, LMAO! I was 12 when this hit, and it was a great crossover that indeed introduced a lot of people to hip hop by being able to play this single on rock music radio stations. However, everyone I knew had already been into the genre (and also RUN DMC, LLCoolJ, Doug E Fresh and many others) for several years...we were lucky to have access to the NY scene and the music that came out in the early 80's where I lived in Orlando and Miami, FL. But I can agree that this became a huge success for both RUN DMC and Aerosmith. I remember that it put Aerosmith back on the map.
This collaboration made it ok for white suburban kids to like hip hop. This cover transformed rap/hip hop from an art form largely unknown outside the black community to the mainstream.

Actually if I recall correctly, run didn't approach Aerosmith it was a producer that brought them together in the end. Run was looking to use their song as a sample, or were already but a producer got with Steven Tyler (front-man of Aerosmith), who at first rejected the idea all together thinking it just noise. But when the producer brought in Run-DMC and Aerosmith at the same time, Steve and the gang actually got to hear what they were already doing with Run and it blew his mind wide open and he and the rest of the band actually loved it and ran in hole-hog on it.
This was an epic moment in music history! Never before had the two genres come together. Neither knew who the other was! It's been said that Aerosmith got to the studio first. When Run DMC arrived, they walked in and said, "Ah sh*t! It's the Rolling Stones"! Breaking through the wall was so symbolic! I remember impatiently waiting for the release of this video!

It wasn't Run-DMC's idea initially, they were just going to sample the song if they could get it from Aerosmith and get their permission. Initially Aerosmith hated the idea, especially Steven Tyler. But when a producer(I think) brought both teams in at the same time and played what they had so far with Run-DMC's sample based stuff, it blew their minds and THEN the band was all in on it. But yea, it wasn't a jump in at first sight thing.
Aerosmith DIDN"T JUMP at the chance. RUN-DMC needed their permission to cover the song, Steven didn't dig rap and wasn't cool with it at all. Rick Rueben, Run-Dmc's producer talked Aerosmith into coming in and meeting DMC and checking out what they were doing. Only then was Stevden won over by rge idea. But they most certainly didn't jump on the idea of their song being clipped.

He had the idea of combining a well known rock band, but who'd been off the scene for quite awhile due to band problems and drug addiction, were now back clean and sober and making a comeback. And RunDMC, who were still somewhat unknown and were getting pretty popular in the hood, but wanted to reach He felt these two styles could blend excellently together (couldn't agree more) and brought them together to calab on this Aerosmith number he felt would be a perfect song to rap to and a perfect way to help both groups with what they needed at the time. Rick's idea for the concept a video with these two should be breaking down walls. And so they busted an actual wall right down in the video. And both have continued breaking down walls ever since.
That's not really the truth. Rick may have gotten the groups together, but the truth is, Run DMC and JMJ had been playing the song for years in live sets. Early DJ's like Jam Mater Jay (RIP) would scour old disco, soul and rock records records looking for beats that the MC's could rap over. They used to play the first two bars of the intro of "Walk This Way" over and over while Darrell and Joe would rap over them. They also used Billy Squire's the "Big Beat" which can be heard on Run DMC's "Here we go (live) and Bob James's 'Take Me to the Mardi Gras' (Peter Piper). So they'd been using the song for years before Rick showed up. Rick's idea was for them to record the song straight up, but without the band already using the beat, he never would have had that idea.
You have no idea. Back when this track first dropped it was even bigger than Old Town Road was last year. And they didn't even have any kind of internet to promote the song. Thats how big and powerful MTV was in culture during that time

It was fun because you could go to some local place like a carnival, and they would be there putting on a show.
Blew me away when Aerosmith decided to redo "Walk This Way" w/Run DMC! I'm from the 70s all the way, as a kid into teenage years. I grew up w Aerosmith's Toy's in the Attic album, I believe their first. I remember it costing me $5.00 for the album at Strawberry's Records and Tapes Store. That was ALOT of $$ back then...lol. ☺️ I still have it and my Technic Turntable w/Diamond Head needle. I still own some 45's as well. And 8 track tapes....cassettes and now CD's. I usually listen to most music on my phone's music lists now. How times are a changing so quickly on us. But I've bought some newer 'Vinyl' Phil Collins newest 21st Century remade/remastered blue vinyl. I just couldn't resist...lol...sounds wicked awesome people! 🎵🎶🎸🎹🥁🥁😎🤗😷

Three badasses from Texas, hell raisers that do their thing and if you don’t like it, they don’t care! Their rise in the 70’s was huge but, they rarely left the State of Texas. This was one of the first mainstream collaborations between rap and rock it it was HUGELY successful. It was also many of our (rockers) first intro to rap. We loved it, rappers loved it, and suddenly there was peace on earth-for five minutes, lol

"Walk This Way" was hit for Aerosmith, in the early to mid seventies. Run-DMC heard it in the eighties and realized the melody was structured like a rap song (what rap was then, anyway), then asked Aerosmith if they wanted to collaborate on a new version of it. The rest is history. I don't anybody who doesn't love this.
I think honestly the reason this this combination worked together so well is because they were both pretty much in their prime doing this song bigger that's the Aerosmith lead singer they're the long brown hair one and that was definitely when he was at his prime and I think it's a lot easier for two groups to work together on a song like that when they're both at their peak because you know that they know all the variations of how they've sung it before and and how they can sing it to to make it mess with one another so that's what I believe is the reason why this works so good together but to be honest this is actually the first time I've ever seen run DMC singing that song so I'm impressed I've heard run DMC songs in the past but this is the first time I've ever seen them in a collaboration with Aerosmith and I got to say it's pretty good.
I'm not shocked! You haven't heard Run Dmc young blood, this wasn't your era or generation. This was my generation as a preteen in the 80s and i'm 49 now. But i'm glad you are exploring! One of the greatest era's in Rap/Hip-hop & Rock. 👍
I don't think that young people really understand how revolutionary this was for the time. This came out of nowhere and NOBODY had ever heard a mix like these two genres ever. Rock and rap were two different worlds and never did the two meet. I remember the first time we heard it on MTV. The whole room was silent with wide eyes through the entire thing. Afterward we were all in a kind of state of shocked joy and couldn't get enough. There was an interview with both bands together where they did explain how the collab came about, but it's been like three freaking decades and I can't remember the details. It might actually be on wiki. It was a huge deal at the time.
They came together when Run DMC was at the top of their game and Aerosmith was a fading 70s rock band after some much publicized addiction issues. I saw Aerosmith In 1979 and I doubt any of them remember the show. Steven Tyler actually threw his mic stand with microphone into the audience. It was crazy. Lots of people left the show early.

Aerosmith talks about how the song came about in one of there autobiographies entitled Walk this way,,,. Aerosmith made the song Walk this way years before and one night at a house party jam Master Jay was scratching it and playing it at a party and everybody like the beat and when they checked it was they saw it was Aerosmith,,,. They called Aerosmith and asked if they could redo the song,,. at the time Aerosmith was just getting out of rehab for the first time and trying to make their comeback So Joe Perry the lead guitarist of Aerosmith counter offered and said we should redo it together. And they did and it was the first time a rap group was on MTV music video
Aerosmith originally released "Walk This Way" in 1975 on their "Toys In The Attic" album Run DMC wanted to rap it. So they got together. You are looking at a LEGENDARY video!!!!
Their song Rock Box was the first rock-rap integration I heard, several years before this collaboration. Another early Run DMC song I like is "You Talk Too Much". From the Raing Hell album, which has Walk This Way, my favorite is It's Tricky, though You Be Illin' and My Adidas are crowd favorites.
And for everyone alive at the time this one song changed everything. I think RUN DMC was sampling the song but struggling to come up with words to rap to it. I heard Rick Ruben suggested they just cover the song and then the idea came to do it with Aerosmith, since it was an Aerosmith song. The fact that it was already a hit for Aerosmith gave it automatic appeal.
the soundtrack album Judgment Night has some great tracks on it in a similar vein to this. with people like Ice T and Slayer, Faith no more and the Boo Yaa Tribe well worth checking out
Love watching you young kids listen to old school from 70-80s before auto tune. That's when you had to be able to actually sing. Wasalso when you had the best music in all types of music. The concert part was filmed at Aerosmith actual concert and they were guest. After the video came out, all the kids started wearing their tennis shoes with no shoe strings. ( watch the part where they show the shoes) Also, one of them is a minister
What i learned, was that back in the day hiphop and punkrock (this isn't punkrock) were underground. They met in the same clubs, understood eachother and so they also mixed
Now let's not forget about Rage and Beastie Boys. Both seamlessly mixed rock and rap and both are heavily influenced from RUN DMC. I was fortunate enough to witness that entire transformation as a kid from the 80's. Good stuff!!
The genre's of music were separated for a long time. In this video the wall that separated the two bands represented the wall between the two music styles. Both were playing the same song and broke through the wall keeping them apart.

Reeses had a commercial where the peanut butter and chocolate were arguing about keeping each other out of the other's jar. Rock and Roll on one side. Rap on the other. These two groups because the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup. It opened doors for Limp Bizxuit, P.O.D., Korn....etc. This song was the birth of a new sub genre, for Rock/Rap. The first of many genres to branch off of urban music. Rick Rueben is a mf genius! He's got the gift to detect something new in the air.

There were other great hip hop artists before RunDMC, but they were the guys who put it on the map. There's just no other way to put it. Without these 3 guys, hip hop would have fizzled out in a few short years. Run DMC brought this sound to the masses. Simply by talking a few risks. Though they decided to go through with it, but were convinced it wasn't going to work. They thought it would sound awful. But when they got into the studio and began calibrating, the quickly knew it sounded great and loved the idea.
Geez the 70's and 80's... Anyway... the beautiful thing about Music or Culture in general is that more often than not what you think are two entirely separate things often come from a similar if not the exact same origin and when those branches intersect again magic happens.

Three badasses from Texas, hell raisers that do their thing and if you don’t like it, they don’t care! Their rise in the 70’s was huge but, they rarely left the State of Texas. They were invited to play the Memphis Blues Festival - which was an all black artist blues festival. These three white cowboys took the stage and the first lick hit...it got everyone’s attention. This was one of the first mainstream collaborations between rap and rock it it was HUGELY successful. It was also many of our (rockers) first intro to rap. We loved it, rappers loved it, and suddenly there was peace on earth-for five minutes, lol

The original of this song is by Aerosmith... It was really known as the first rap song! The collaboration with run DMC revive their music.
"Walk This Way" was hit for Aerosmith, in the early to mid seventies. Run-DMC heard it in the eighties and realized the melody was structured like a rap song (what rap was then, anyway), then asked Aerosmith if they wanted to collaborate on a new version of it. The rest is history. I don't anybody who doesn't love this.
I think honestly the reason this this combination worked together so well is because they were both pretty much in their prime doing this song bigger that's the Aerosmith lead singer they're the long brown hair one and that was definitely when he was at his prime and I think it's a lot easier for two groups to work together on a song like that when they're both at their peak because you know that they know all the variations of how they've sung it before and and how they can sing it to to make it mess with one another so that's what I believe is the reason why this works so good together but to be honest this is actually the first time I've ever seen run DMC singing that song so I'm impressed I've heard run DMC songs in the past but this is the first time I've ever seen them in a collaboration with Aerosmith and I got to say it's pretty good.
I'm not shocked! You haven't heard Run Dmc young blood, this wasn't your era or generation. This was my generation as a preteen in the 80s and i'm 49 now. But i'm glad you are exploring! One of the greatest era's in Rap/Hip-hop & Rock. 👍

I don't think that young people really understand how revolutionary this was for the time. This came out of nowhere and NOBODY had ever heard a mix like these two genres ever. Rock and rap were two different worlds and never did the two meet. I remember the first time we heard it on MTV. The whole room was silent with wide eyes through the entire thing. Afterward we were all in a kind of state of shocked joy and couldn't get enough.
There was an interview with both bands together where they did explain how the collab came about, but it's been like three freaking decades and I can't remember the details. It might actually be on wiki. It was a huge deal at the time.

They came together when Run DMC was at the top of their game and Aerosmith was a fading 70s rock band after some much publicized addiction issues. I saw Aerosmith In 1979 and I doubt any of them remember the show. Steven Tyler actually threw his mic stand with microphone into the audience. It was crazy. Lots of people left the show early.

Aerosmith talks about how the song came about in one of there autobiographies entitled Walk this way,,,. Aerosmith made the song Walk this way years before and one night at a house party jam Master Jay was scratching it and playing it at a party and everybody like the beat and when they checked it was they saw it was Aerosmith,,,. They called Aerosmith and asked if they could redo the song,,. at the time Aerosmith was just getting out of rehab for the first time and trying to make their comeback So Joe Perry the lead guitarist of Aerosmith counter offered and said we should redo it together. And they did and it was the first time a rap group was on MTV music video
The origins to this video began in the late 70s, early 80s, years before RUN DMC had made it, they said they used to rap to the drums on this song.

Their song Rock Box was the first rock-rap integration I heard, several years before this collaboration. Another early Run DMC song I like is "You Talk Too Much". From the Raing Hell album, which has Walk This Way, my favorite is It's Tricky, though You Be Illin' and My Adidas are crowd favorites.
And for everyone alive at the time this one song changed everything. I think RUN DMC was sampling the song but struggling to come up with words to rap to it. I heard Rick Ruben suggested they just cover the song and then the idea came to do it with Aerosmith, since it was an Aerosmith song. The fact that it was already a hit for Aerosmith gave it automatic appeal.

Love watching you young kids listen to old school from 70-80s before auto tune. That's when you had to be able to actually sing. Wasalso when you had the best music in all types of music. The concert part was filmed at Aerosmith actual concert and they were guest. After the video came out, all the kids started wearing their tennis shoes with no shoe strings. ( watch the part where they show the shoes) Also, one of them is a minister
What i learned, was that back in the day hiphop and punkrock (this isn't punkrock) were underground. They met in the same clubs, understood eachother and so they also mixed

The genre's of music were separated for a long time. In this video the wall that separated the two bands represented the wall between the two music styles. Both were playing the same song and broke through the wall keeping them apart.

There were other great hip hop artists before RunDMC, but they were the guys who put it on the map.
There's just no other way to put it.
Without these 3 guys, hip hop would have fizzled out in a few short years.
Run DMC brought this sound to the masses.
Simply by talking a few risks.
Though they decided to go through with it, but were convinced it wasn't going to work.
They thought it would sound awful.
But when they got into the studio and began calibrating, the quickly knew it sounded great and loved the idea.
Geez the 70's and 80's... Anyway... the beautiful thing about Music or Culture in general is that more often than not what you think are two entirely separate things often come from a similar if not the exact same origin and when those branches intersect again magic happens.
