About me:
I've been making short films for 20 years, starting at age 11. I directed my first feature film, Bad is Bad, in 2010. Made for only $6,000, the film went on to reach over 7 million views and garner critical acclaim. More recently, my short film, Will "The Machine", screened and won awards at film festivals around the world. Released online in 2019, it reached over 1 million views in just a month. I also work as a video editor, cutting ads for clients such as Apple, Netflix, and Beats by Dre.

Bear Grylls of filmmaking: Improvise Adapt and Overcome!
I guess he said that while luxuriating in his RV during the nights when he claimed to be sleeping rough.
The idea that an actor should be malleable, clay like, goes for all memebers of the team. Trusting yourself that you know the story well enough to listen to your instincts is hard but man it gets closer to organic moments. Great video as always!!
Man this is incredible. Today, we just finished a movie with some friends and a few hours later we came up with an idea that we think may be better than what we wrote for the final scene. And we were thinking wether we should shoot this ending or not and your video come out telling us to do it ! A month earlier your video « ideas don’t matter » just unlocked something in me and i wrote a scenario that we start shooting tomorrow. That was another great timing. I think the Ytb algorithm has never been so efficient. Your content is just so precisely what i need i can’t get over it. Thank you and keep going man 💪
Love that!
You released this exactly the minute I needed it. I'm working on a horror short for a local festival that screens this October and it's the most well planned, thoroughly envisioned film I've ever made. I've been really struggling with improvisation vs. my vision so far, and am trying to embrace the limitations as best as I can, instead of freezing up and not knowing what to do. Thank you for this.
It’s like all the preproduction is a map and the spontaneous ideas are the road side attractions
Yes, you need to get to the destination, but the discoveries along the way are often what make the trip memorable.
Yes!
The beginning of a beautiful friendship from Casablanca was added in post, never planned.
My favorite director who loves improvisation is Wong Kar-wai
I was just thinking about that Dustin Hoffman scene and thinking it would be funny to cut to the cabbie who pulls out his hand cannon and says, "You talking to me?"
I’m making my second Film soon and I’ve been stressing like crazy about cast members dropping out and shooting days getting moved and I think that this vid got recommended at the perfect time to talk some sense into me 😂
for midnight cowboy i did hear that they didn’t even have permits to shoot on the street, they actually planned the shot with the lights and the cab almost hit them when it ran a red light. not sure if it’s try but make the scene even more special
Thanks for sharing tips and tricks, very helpful!! Great inspiration 👍👍
About to film a short film right now, wish me luck
Good luck!
I cannot agree with you more on these insights. I love the freedom to just swing it on the fly and pray for the magic, it's an awesome feeling, those happy accidents. And when you find something great, you can always tweak and build on that moment to make it even better.
Great insights!
FWIW -- Cowboy was shot without permits -- no barricades to push past. Ryan Gosling was told by the director to climb the fence -- but Michelle Williams didn't know (agree that it wasn't in the actual script).
Just so you know. :)
Great examples, though. :)
Thanks for the insight🙌
Your video lifts so much of anxiety, thank you
I don't know if you take requests or if you've ever covered this topic, but I'm a film student and am trying to get into making action and Sci Fi films. I'm curious if you feel there are certain lenses and frame rates that work more ideally with certain genres?
The ending of that movie really does rule
So good. Thankyou.
Loving the artwork in the background! Where did you get the Travis Bickle 🚖picture?
Love the raccoon story lol
Damn good analogy!
great advice as always. isnt it great we're in the digital age where we can keep things rolling with less worry about the cost
I know of one project that started off as a musical but later became a bank heist movie. They just went with the flow. You’ve probably heard of it. Heat with Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer. True story. (Totally not true.) (The helpful filmmaking tips in this video are appreciated. Actually true. 👍🎬)

Just starting to shoot my first short film what is my biggest concern and something that I should really focus on to make it best it could be
You ever watch The Expanse? You a lot like the lead Steven Strait.

Not a big fan of the music in the background 🙄😜..... otherwise I really enjoy the channel
you should use more women filmmakers in your examples
If you want to beat the market or become a millionaire, the first thing you need to do is , to get financial education. a fellow creator,,,
Making a video telling a independent filmmaker to be ready to adapt and improvise is similar to making a video telling someone they need to remember to keep breathing so you can continue living. If you need to be told to be ready to adapt and improvise you are in serious trouble.
Well I think it's a really good thing to say because a lot of independent filmmakers or novice filmmakers may take some things too literal when it comes to storyboarding and they don't have the instincts yet to really know how to be flexible on scene. Instincts come from years and years of experience. Most novice filmmakers don't have experience.
Pay no attention to this man behind the curtain!!!
Almost 69th view. So close
