imagine kayako and toshio origin story as a sitcom nothing scary just a happy family comedy until in the end of the final episode all hell breaks loose and the house becomes what it became
You perfectly encapsulated why I loved this series. Part of what I didn't like about the later Ju-On movies is they felt very repetitive, while JU-ON: Origins was a breath of fresh air and full of brilliant visual storytelling. I know this isn't the point but 'Ouija: Origin of Evil' was a good prequel and far surpassed the original, and the title made sense because it was actually an origin story for the ghost in the first movie.
This series was/is totally brilliant! This and the original, first ever JUON with that VCR quality are the best. The Netflix series totally harked back to that original era and feel and was so so so successful because of that!
It helps that Ju-On started in a more self indulgent and schlocky place, so it has more room for variety in its entries. Ring isn't nearly as flexible in that way.
Thank you so much for explaining the name! Ju on is one of my favourite horror franchises of all time so I was really confused when I went into this series and couldn't see anything to make it an 'origin'. I thoroughly enjoyed the series once I accepted that it had nothing to do with the Saeki curse, and I would say it is one of the best horror shows I've ever watched, but the name still bugged me so having that cleared up is a huge help. I will officially call it Ju on: Spooky House from now on. Fantastic video as always, really looking forward to seeing you tackle Kuchisake Onna next time.
Juon origins is faithful to the creaters foundation , basically its the house that its occupants created the juon and so forth other occupation to or one's close enough or commit such acts , repeating its cycle . Different people , same outcomes of the same curse. Imo the show did a great job conveying the hopelessness , depravity of human nature along with some influenced, etc
Ju-On is my favourite Japanese horror film series but I really disliked this tv adaption. It doubles down on abuse not only of girls and women but especially pregnant women, seeming to draw all of its titillation and “horror” from these sequences. Not to mention the exploitative gauntlet Kiyomi goes through. Ju-On was always able to create genuine foreboding without relying on overusing these tropes. Kayako’s story was devastating enough and here we see her experience cheapened for easy scares. Maybe this would’ve worked for a different series but not one connected to the Ju-On legacy.
Great vid bro, i really love your content! The scene in front of the sliding door was so creepy... the dark silhouette with the peircing eyes was simple but definately gave me chills. It's hard for me to get spooked because of how many horror movies I've seen. I'm always hoping the next movie I see will scare me;so this definately delivered!
Yeah I felt like that moment was probably the best visual in the entire series. It's definitely up there with some of the most iconic shots from the original films.
Should've named it *Ju-On: OTHERSIDE* or *Ju-On: ANOTHER STORY* . Still, one of the best yet criminally underrated (and even polarizing) shows on Netflix. Hoping for 2nd season to expand the lore of the cursed house.
What got me was just how unflinching this series gets with some of its most disturbing scenes. That one scene (you know what I’m talking about) in episode four sealed the deal for me. For me, the scariest aspect about this show isn’t the ghosts or house, it’s the human characters who end up doing some extremely depraved shit over the course of the show. And knowing that a large chunk of Ju-On: Origins is based on real cases just ramps up the disturbing factor for me.
@@strafer8764 Yeah that's the sad thing about Netflix for me is that sometimes they have some really great and interesting shows and those are usually the ones that get cut after a season or two. I might be alone on this one as I don't really hear anyone talk about it, but I really did like the show Marco Polo, especially for the actor that played Kublai Khan whose name I have sadly forgotten.
I liked it, but it was just too abstract honestly. I'm all for horror that makes you think but this show especially the last episode was just such a seemingly jumbled mess. No idea what's actually going on, what's real, who's who, how the stories tie together ect. Constantly jumping around to random sequences without any explanation. At a certain point it's just tiring trying to figure out what the hell is going on and it's a shame because the visuals, acting, and everything besides the "story" were perfect. Such a wasted potential.
I also belong to the group who absolutely love this series! As you said, it was a highly refreshing instalment. I wish more people would appreciate this because I need a season 2 😅
There's a lot of good Japanese/Korean TV shows on Netflix. A lot of times Netflix will just slap their logo onto something foreign that's premiering in another country, with very little input on the project creatively, as opposed to some of its American titles.
@@ZettaiJapan that’s true. The horror selection here in Latin America is not that great but at least we got this show and some others. I really enjoyed it. I always recommend it :)
Pretty wild just how much Ju-on content has been produced over the years. I always think of the franchise as 4 films made back in the early 2000s by one guy. Not like... a whole media empire.
(i could be wrong tho) i heard/read that the house this series filmed at is about to get demolished. 😥 Pls don't let it be true, bc we need 2nd season to expand the lore of the house's curse
I hear many people say that the rape scene was pretty graphic but it really wasn't. The camera looks away and barely shows anything, we see feet and legs at best. The audio and the screams are what makes it sound more gruesome. The scene is meant to be unpleasant but it still has the respect to not show it graphically or sexualize it, which i find is a problem with many animes. It can still be triggering tho. So you are warned. But yeah, the people who were calling the show nothing but a j-perv show hasn't seen half the french films, 70s exploitation films, or animes that get released every year. Ju On : Origins atleast handled this stuff with more care, while also reminding you that it is a horrific act. Again, as i said, it can still be triggering. So you are bewarned. Also, many people complain about the rape victim then running away and marrying the same guy who raped her, but tend to forget, that she had a severe mental breakdown by both the act and the supposed ghost she sees just right after that. Also, rape victims tragically falling in love/manipulating/running away with their perpetrator is a very real thing that has happened in the real world. It usually relates to victims who feel like they have no one to talk to or even those, who vows revenge in their own broken logic. You can say it is a type of stockholm syndrome but kind of not. So yeah, if you think that the victim running away with her perpetrator was dumb, then i acknowledge your priveledge, because in a depressed and conservative countries like Japan, India, China, or even South korea (yes, i am not joking), you would be suprised to know it is not an uncommon case.
Important to note that none of it was shown in a positive light. I wasn't a "good" thing that Kiyomi ran off with her rapist, but it's suppose to add to how fucked up the whole situation is for her.
A movie or series has to be really good and make a good point out of it to justify a rape scene for me, and after the first episode I just didn't feel it deserved it at all. I watched episode 2 and it was better, but still not good enough for me to want to keep watching. After this video I might give it another try. The scene wasn't really that graphic if I recall correctly, but Japan is pretty good at casually adding rape scenes in anything without reason or as a cheap plot device at best or straight up as punishment for the victim at worst, so I tend to stay away from Japanese stuff with rape scenes in them in general.
This series could had been a masterpiece, the ability of building tension and creating eerie atmospheres is excellent and I found the initial narrative concept, the characters and situations to be extraordinarily interesting premises... But after just a few episodes everything melted in nonsense, narratively speaking, not a good nonsense or sense of delirium which would had been good but just aproximative righting. Such a shame.. it really would had been extraordinary
I completely hated this when I first watched it mostly because they marketed it as being this Origin Story of the house but it turns out the original story of the house is just a movie and this tv series is supposed to be an adaption of a real life events that the movie was based on. And If I'm right I remember the ending being convoluted as hell and the ghost "reveal" was completely laughable.
I've heard this explained as an alternate origin, it is not Kayako or Toshio its a different woman killed by her husbando that started the Grudge or curse in this dimension/universe... the house is shown to ignore space and time, so its possible for it to have many origins in theory.
That makes sense that it could be a parallel universe theory although I do think it’s not necessarily what happened in the house but what the house is making happen to other people. There were several lines of dialogue eluding to this in the show such as the realtor being unscathed and laughing about it and the detective thinking hauntings are absurd to later reiterating the house being haunted. There is also discussion about the house luring people which is why it didn’t kill the realtor or the horror writer as they would help bring more victims to the house
what if they did a ju-on with a male, father figure ghost entering the house? And it gets freudian about the family dynamic, since toshiro is forever stuck as a child. Meanwhile a human family move into the house.
Could be an interesting place to take the series. We've explored Kayako and Toshio being the main antagonistic force in the originals and the reboots, but Papa Saeki has been relatively unexplored despite literally starting everything.
i wish they finished the story, not left the story only half way done. i wish Juon Origins had a season 2 and finished the story, Juon Origins deserved a ending, not a story half way done.
True, a lot of the little details and moments that reference the original Ju-On films are suppose to add up to an "origin" for the films. But honestly you can kind of take that or leave it, the meta elements are more for fun than anything else.
Yeah, the problem is entirely in the name - if they had called this something else, like Ju-On: Haunting or Cursed House in American, I wouldn't have had the same expectations of it being a prequel. It's not like the series hasn't ever veered away from Kayako before. Otherwise, perfectly good series. ...That being said, did they need to make this house have so many similar elements to the Saeki house if it wasn't going to be a prequel?
The series was too focused on humans and not enough ghosts, I tried to like it but found it very boring overall. But I would say I am the minority around here.
You’re not wrong, I just finished it because I just discovered it like a week ago haha. While I did appreciate it as a series, I really wish they did more with the ghosts. Also admittedly I do miss Kayako and Toshio but that’s why we watch their movies haha.
Ju-on 1 and 2 are horror masterpieces and this show was a great tribute to those original films.
imagine kayako and toshio origin story as a sitcom
nothing scary just a happy family comedy
until in the end of the final episode all hell breaks loose and the house becomes what it became

I know this isn't the point but 'Ouija: Origin of Evil' was a good prequel and far surpassed the original, and the title made sense because it was actually an origin story for the ghost in the first movie.
now they should make ouija 2 which follows the prequel.
This series was/is totally brilliant! This and the original, first ever JUON with that VCR quality are the best. The Netflix series totally harked back to that original era and feel and was so so so successful because of that!
The actress for Kiyomi was the standout performer for me. She really conveyed every pain, horror, and madness that she felt with utter brilliance.
I quite enjoyed this mini-series. Though I enjoy most "Ju On" content, which has consistently been better than "Ring" content for years now.
It helps that Ju-On started in a more self indulgent and schlocky place, so it has more room for variety in its entries. Ring isn't nearly as flexible in that way.

That tears it! This show is going up my list to watch it sooner than expected
I also enjoyed JU-ON: Origins, especially the end credit theme. I thought the music was incredibly fitting.
I like the shot too that the music plays over. It’s a shame there probably won’t be another season

I’ve seen it and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!
The series gave me chills on my first viewing when I got to Episodes 3 and 4 LOL
I really hoped this series gets a second season.
Me too, so maybe they'd tie it together and it would make sense. Oh well.
