Kinda funny that when u cut corners on wiring, you laugh about it. But when a bin builder cuts corners, you start a lawsuit. I think both are hilarious.
Small box and a 3-phase contactor with 120 volt coil will control three light circuits in that box while remotely controlling the relay with 14 gauge wire because that's already there. Once which can then control one two or three circuits with one switch. If you only need two, they also sell 2 pole contactors.
Cole make sure you clean up that fuse box papa we don’t need any electrical accidents A big congratulations on you and Nave new addition what a little cutie he will be driving tractors before you know it 🚜
Contactor is your best choice. 120 volt coil controlled by your door switches and as many piles as lighting circuits. Common in larger buildings actually. Plus your 14ga switch wire will be just fine, as the "control" circuit will be less than an amp.
That' pretty complicated. I think he could run all of the low wattage lights in the entire building on one single 15 amp circuit. The 2 amp rating is the fixture rating, which is not used for circuit load calculations.
Not a transportation engineer, more of a water engineer, but I would assume your 3:1 slope question is some engineer is taking some form of risk and has liability insurance for if someone crashes into that one spot since the 2 design points (elevation of the fields) and their design slope for the ditch make it so that it has to be a little more sketchy. But if you were to do the same ditch work with the slopes that they are trying to prevent you from getting sued if you did the same thing. Bit of an edge case for sure
He should give them all constant power for the motion sensor. And then add 3 switches that can bypass the motion sensors. That can turn on the lights and keep them on. With the 3 switches he can have 3 breakers. Fixing the overload issue.
Wow, you three are really whipping the fields into shape. It will be very interesting to see how much more yield you get from this work in the next harvest. Best wishes to the CornStar families 😁👌👌❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
In the future I’d look around and/or online to get good low amp draw LEDS. Did a 40x60 garage with around 3 times the light needed. Used one 20 amp circuit with 3 switch legs off it.
Your shop lights may be and excellent example of how when you don't have enough expertise you need to either 1) Hire someone who does to do it or 2) At least get them to advise you on what is required. It's taken me several projects that ended up costing more in time and money to learn expertise is worth the price. You've got some drive and nerve, I'll give you that. I do love your videos and the GREAT FAMILY VALUES. Thanks for great RUclips.
Cole will be fine doing it himself. I like your point 2) however. He is using low wattage fixtures, they could all go on one breaker. The 2 amp is just the fixture rating and not used for load calculation.
@@JP-jq1qx But the 2-amp fixture rating is what an insurance company could use to claim that the wiring was substandard, out of code, and thus give them an excuse to deny any claim. He could probably win that, but he would waste much time & effort fighting it. Better to just go with that rating and re-do some wiring now.
Hi Cole, i'm a French viewer and I am very interested when you talked about wiring your lights at the beginning, I am a industrial mechanic and programmer for PLCs, if you are interested I could help you make the electrical schematics and plans for your installation. Get it sorted out before a wire overheats and sets fire and burns your building and contents to the ground. I wish people would not mess with electricity if they don't know what they are doing.
Glad you caught the constant load derating and the wire, both together could have certainly lead to an electrical fire. Even if you didnt hire an electrician to put them in I'm sure you could throw one a couple hundred dollars to answer your questions or help you come up with a plan for how to execute your contactor plan!
I think he could run all of the low wattage lights in the entire building on one single 15 amp circuit. The 2 amp rating is the fixture rating, which is not used for circuit load calculations. A 15 amp breaker is rated to 1440 watt continuous.
Actually, an electrical fire was unlikely. Electrical wire is overdesigned, so that a 15amp (#14) wire can about 70-75% overload, so that could probably carry up to 25 amps for a while. And high up in that building, wire could get pretty hot in an Iowa summer, further decreasing the current carrying capacity. So it's much safer to just replace it with proper-sized wire. Especially given the possible loss if a fire ever started there, filled with flammable oil & such, and lots of expensive tools and farm equipment. The extra cost of larger wire doesn't compare at all.
You need to double check what amperage the switch is rated for and also you have to derate the wire depending on how far the lights are from the breaker box. You might need to run 10 awg just to get the required amperage at the very end.
just for future stuff. Yes You can use a contactor and all that stuff but in a shop or any commercial building just use 12 gauge wire!. no where in a shop should there be 14 gauge. Not even in an office. Congrats On your Kiddo.
