  • From Jane Austin to Bridgerton, 'society season' has always been a fascination for many.
    Alan Whicker looked at the centuries-old traditional party season of Britain's elite, when young women, from prestigious families, were launched into high society through balls and dinner parties.
    "Mingling the offspring of dukes, Americans, politicians and businessmen and bringing rich profits to photographers, musicians, dressmakers, finishing schools, florists, caterers, publicity men and blue-haired Knightsbridge widows with contacts."
    Whicker spoke to a group of previous debutantes who've been through it all, including previous 'Deb of the Year', Miss Judy Huxtable.
    This clip is from Tonight, originally broadcast 04 Apr 1962.

    I love the sarcasm in Alan Whicker's narration. Five years later and Swinging London would be in full flow and the phrase "coming out" would take on a whole new meaning.

    People did have gentler facial features back then didn't they? They broad faces, wide eyes, small upturned noses, nice straight teeth etc all WITHOUT requiring surgery. Nowadays most people have narrow faces, big bony noses and crooked teeth. I think it has something to do with babies drinking formula out of the bottle. Back then most were breastfed so there faces developed nicely!!!

      @PatchworkUSA Год назад +14

      That's not true. Bottle feeding was all the rage between the 1920's and 1950's and early 60's, promoted by the new (in the 20's) medical specialty - pediatrics. It took the hippie movement of the late 60's to bring breastfeeding back. The reason the women in the film have rounder faces is because they didn't have the push we have today to be athletic, toned, with as little body fat as possible. They had more body fat, thus rounder faces.
