- Jason LeValley of Psychedelic Scene interviews drumming legend Carmine Appice, who played with 60's psychedelic band Vanilla Fudge among many other acts.
Carmine inspired me to start playing drums, back in the seventies. He was my hero, and still is. A living legend. The first time I heard him play was on Rod Stewart's Foot Loose And Fancy Free album, back in 1977. I remember hearing for the first time the intro of You Keep Me Hangin' On, and I was just mesmerized... Like, OMG ! Who is that drummer ??? He defined heavy rock drumming, his powerful playing, his relaxed timing, big sound, awesome double bass technique. When it comes to playing drums, Carmine is the real deal.
Been a fan of your drumming skills since you were VF and Cactus and beyond. Looking good still Carmine..keep on rockin
VF , Cactus , BBA He could have stopped in 1972 and his legacy would have been set in stone
Carmine is one bad ass drummer
Italian pride 🇮🇹
Absolute great interview with a great musician.
A master/legend of early heavy metal. Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and Beck Bogert & Appice!
Go Carmine, go with Jesus!!
Carmine your still a badass
Carmine, It’s 1968 and I am working the window of manufacturers Hanover trust bank. One of the retired guys who worked as a messenger told me he was your Uncle Roxy. A real nice guy , when I told him I played drums he told me to go back to school.
1967 I was 13 My friends older sister brought sime albums home Disreali gears are you experienced and VANILLA FUDGE
i lived 20 minutes from the action house in island park….fudge ruled….best live band
Ps Glad the hair dye is gone
That first Vanilla Fudge record is the bomb!
Jason, I like how you let Carmine do most of the talking. He looked like he didn't mine doing the interview.
Thanks, Gary. I felt the same way. It seemed like he wanted to keep talking when I was trying to wrap it up.
@@psychedelicscene I have been around carm at a drum clinic just let him loose and sit back he's a talker
Drum teacher here in NYC, Realistic Rock is still a crucial part of my teaching curriculum. Carmine should be happy to know his drum parts are still actively being learned by 5-13 year old kids!
O Boy Vanilla Fudge was very influential to me. I Live in Bensonhurst I started a group with my Brothers and a keyboard player who now sees Appice often. I remember hearing they were in the neighborhood hanging out in a few clubs. At a battle of the bands we did a Beetle Tune Guitar gently weeps in a vanilla fudge style we got an aware for it. This is a really cool interview it's like I know Vin LOL I did play with his brother who at the time was playing Vinny's drums off bay parkway more towards 21 avenue in the 70 s He only wanted to play Vanilla fudge tunes but I understand it was vinny's drum set I vaguely remember. The Bass player I was with was really into bogart. That must have been really messed up to be doused at a gig. Thats a cruel thing to do.O my God That was nuts I can Imagine How Vin felt. Yes When you get close to death it makes you think. It's great to hear that he is closer to God. Great interview Thanks for making it.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
Mr. Appice......if you are listening...thank you for the interview and I have two questions for you
1) how good is Pat Travers? He's a fav of mine and....
2) I'm trying to play drums and I'm practicing your Cactus version on Restrictions, the song "Evil" Wow !
I'm in love with your syncopated grooves and how you play behind the beat. Very tasty licks.
You are my all time favorite Sir.
I can't figure out what's going on with his hair there
Great interview. I was a high schooler when Vanilla Fudge hit the top of the scene. Us kids all we did was hang out at each other's house after school listening to the latest lp's and 45 rpms. Vanilla Fudge was a big hit with us. I got a guitar a friend had a bass and his brother had a set of Ludwig drums. We goof jammed our way thru high school, In 1969 I was in the Air Force. I was sent to Europe while the U.S. was pulling out of Vietnam. I'm 71 now and sing and play guitars at open mics for the love of sharing music. I also owned 2 sets of drums. Gene Krupa and Keith Moon were some of my inspiration icons. Carmine had a great career that's not over yet. Best wishes to everyone. Thanks for the enlightening interview.
These guys have to be in the 80 s by now....good for them .love Carmines work!
I wish the Rolling Stones would get Carmine to play on their tour. Charlie Watts is irreplaceable, but this dude has the style and ability to make it interesting.
Whats up with the toupee randomly plopped on his head?
The best Cactus record ever? Not even close. In fact, that’s an insult to Jim McCarty and the memory of Tim Bogert.
I waiting for your next song unpatiently every Hard Rock drummers Master...
which part of Florida did you move to Carmine? hehe 🙈😊
Sorry dude. You are not talking to Carmine face to face!!

Good drummer, but i dont like his religious bullshit.
It’s not bullshit to him. He had a near death experience and religion helped sooth him. If that’s what gives him comfort, so be it. Btw, I’m not religious.
