Obscura was very avant-garde at the time. Nothing like their older stuff. Nonetheless, they were badass shows. I saw them quite a few times during that era.
First time I heard this song was when I downloaded it from metal-rules.com on my 56k modem in the late 1990s. I was just getting into metal and didn't even know what blast beats were. I thought this was utter noise. Then I listened again 10-15 years later and my mind all but exploded. I could not believe the genius I was listening to.
I played this for a music theory class and no one could even begin to process it. Sick performance here, a definite peak of Gorguts IMO their best lineup
Imagine if you played along on guitar to the song itself. People would think you were inhuman. In my first band my drummer was still in high-school, he showed our demo to his music teacher and apparently he kinda flipped out! He said we were musical geniuses lol.
@moochicken2253 ruclips.net/video/mqrFMjzIkDU/видео.htmlsi=-i_YZUzxkwe8crx5 My first band, I wrote all the music/lyrics and I was personally training my drummer, this song I had to perform the drums for this recording and the song before it on the full EP
RIP Big Steve Hurdle. You're role in shaping the sound of Technical Death Metal will not be forgotten. Though no one could ever duplicate what you and Luc created with Obscura.
Luc does good vocals but those back up wailing old woman death vocals are terrible. They are annoying throughout the album. Thankfully they are not on from wisdom to hate.
It's such an authentic, weird, terrific way of executing the technique; I think it's even impossible for the most accurate player by ear to figure it out by just listening to it (or maybe after hundreds of attempts).
I cant imagine sitting down and nailing this entire song on guitar and here we have these Gods playing, singing and head banging to it all as if it were a daily routine.
+Vamsi I've managed to play this entire song but I can't headbang to it, it's very hard to concentrate on playing such a confusing and technical piece while headbanging. Oh yeah, and the vocals.
Not even the greatest player by ear could figure it out (not easily in the slightest after as many times listening to it as one could try)... unless looking at the movements of the hands.
This whole album is a really artful, thoughtful, painful ode to psychological anguish. Came out when I was 16 and was a godsend to me, mentally afflicted as I felt, and as obsessed as I was with technical death metal. Still love it.
When life gets a little too tough for me, I head out in the woods in the middle of the night and listen through _Obscura_ in its entirety. It's somehow rather... cathartic.
That right there, was probably the peak of his entire life, laying down some of the most insane brutal shit ever performed ... Didn't he suffer from depression? I know how that is , those moments where you just know your kicking ass and the band is locked in.. That's the face of a musical genius that has learned that he wasnt so worthless after all. I know this because I have gone thru the same thing in a band i was in not to long ago!
No, it's so good that it bears no aesthetic relation to any other band and creates moments of anger, beauty, sadness, and nihilistic decay out of the most raucous, dissonant note choice possible. There are albums which are equal, such as Morbid Angel's masterwork Blessed Are the Sick, but not better. Truly one of the most inspiring, unique releases in metal music.
I remember when this came out, nobody knew what to make of it tbh we were all trying to play catch up to them. a year of listening to this masterpiece and most of us still didn't get it entirely but listening to it was pretty magical if you were a fan
+John Clock I remember downloading this song as an MP3 from metal-rules.com on my 56k modem. I didn't consider it music. What the fuck were people thinking listening to it? My taste in metal matured as the years passed and I gave it another listen about 10 years later and I almost fell out of my chair because my brain was so blown. Played on a good setup with good because it blows everything away.
same over here, my bass player gave me this album, sayin' this is something for you i guess.. he didnt understand what happened with gorguts style switch. 20 years later they suddenly see this was a masterpiece :)
would have loved to been a death metal fan when this came out. I'm glad they basically did the same thing again with their last two releases (reinventing the genre). gorguts deserves all the praise they get.
Steve's vocals... Wow. Sounds just like the album. And the contrast between Luc and Steve with the vocal tone sounds sick too! Thank you Gorguts, the only band to ever reinvent the wheel, several times now.
Can't imagine the cheer awe and discomfort the crow of 98'was hearing this monstrosity of chaos!!!...Luc and Steeve the best duo in extreme metal history!!
Took me a few years to unpack this album. Now that I have, I can hardly fathom the sheer genius involved. This line-up struggled and suffered to get this thing made and, in doing so, immortalized themselves and changed the world of extreme music forever. How often can you make a statement like that about a metal band?
This is the most abrasive and most insane metal I ever heard, I am so happy about it because I always searched for a band like this and struck gold with them
I can see how they’ve influenced bands like Artificial Brain. When I first heard this album, I was confused. It sounded like they were playing while tuning their guitars in a weird rhythm. But as I listen I have realized that these guys are legit visionaries.
Both the weirder tapping and the use of varied, non-traditional intervals (almost no fifths from what my ears tell me), I suspect, is what made them sound SO different and, off course, they made it work blissfully as just a bunch of musicians could.
Steeve, you look like you had been lost out in the woods eating bears in this video! Great footage. Love that most of the crowd is staring in disbelief as you guys were playing.
I saw Steve with Gorguts in 1998, I was 16 back then. I had never heard of Gorguts before that show...but after seeing them live, I was COMPLETELY blown away. R.I.P Steve
Fucking insane album. To think that this shit was written in 93-94.. Gorguts has always been ahead of their time and challenging your ears. What a great band.
They knew. They knew that soon the world would understand these words: would live these words each and every day. Wtf is happening to the world? No one can answer. Everything is obscure. Only memories have clarity as we grasp for respite from the confusion seeking a dark stasis, a comfort of silence.
You know I saw these guys a couple days in a local bar outside of Detroit and they were absolutely amazing and I got to chat with Luc for a minute and he was such a cool guy!

A part from the songs on Colored Sands, I really like the the live versions of Gorguts songs better than the album versions. Same thing with Today is the Day.
You can have your opinion but best to keep something like that to yourself, man. Gorguts is revered by many and though "Obscura" requires a bit of easing in, it's a phenomenal album...
I absolutely love how still the crowd is. They have no idea what's going on. To see Gorguts in '98 must've blown minds.
I can't imagine... this was completely out of left field.
2021 and it's STILL weird as fuck and I adore it all the more for it.
Obscura was very avant-garde at the time. Nothing like their older stuff. Nonetheless, they were badass shows. I saw them quite a few times during that era.
I remember the really mind boggling thing was how tight they were amid all the chaos.
Crowd in 98 : What that goblins are doing with the neck of their guitar !

You can't duplicate it.
This album, "Obscura" is what King Crimson would've sounded like if they played death metal... killer music.
Well, Crimson did make "The ConstruKction of Light".
While never as heavy or brutal it is pretty damn dissnonant, eerie and proggresive at times.
