  • In this video I'll explore the possibilities of hooking up Terra to the modular system through midi. This will require reading the manual to find out how to enable midi, which CC messages are sent and translating midi to CV in the modular. I had to use Shuttle Mate to connect DIN, and Shuttle Control to convert the CC messages to control voltage. So it takes time to set it up, configure it and find useful targets to modulate, but it was definitely worth it!

I must have missed this video somehow. I was hoping to sell my Linnstrument and buy this. I have never really connected with Linnstrument but I've always been afraid to let it go, thinking I will gel with it one day. I'm not very midi minded so probaby a bit much for me to do all the mapping etc so I think i'll just hang on to it and leave Terra for a while. Great video and sounds as usualy dude

I really appreciate your walking through your exploration process... so many creators just jump to the conclusion and skip over all the failed attempts and experimentation. Using terra as a more chaotic controller within an ecosystem of CV seems like the most rewarding... thanks!

Thanks for the support. Soma gear often seems to be 'worshipped' instead of played. I guess this is why I don't want free gear in exchange for a good review. In my first Terra video I made very clear it's one of the most gratifying SOund MAchines in the Synth world which can be determined by the number of 'wow' moments on your first day with the device. The manual clearly speaks of the secondary role of MIDI which sounds like a concession instead of a compromise. The MPE implementation is just not as good as it could have been and I think they should have added a CC map in a config on the USB to match your VSTs. So yes, I got this vision of Terra as the primary instrument while driving other gear with 'secondary' MIDI messages, like a director, or a spider in a web of midi channels. It was more than great fun.

Did you personally customize the Terra’s panel with white paint? It looks really cool!

Yes, I used a fine acrylic paint marker because I could not see what I was doing :)

Thanks for making this video - as a Linnstrument owner awaiting a Terra, this is great info. I'll stick to using it standalone. Do you know if Terra accepts midi clock sync in for the internal rhythmic LFOs or arpeggiators?

Well, I found this interesting. Marrying up modules, and the like .. I bet the module designers are as surprised as anybody, with what users come up with.

I dont know what are You doing at all. Was hoping to see how to connect Terra to PC...

Are you serious? Terra connects to PC with old fashioned 5 pin DIN midi, so your audiio interface needs to have a DIN midi IN and/or OUT port. The USB port is for firmware updates only.

extending Terra? why? it is a disrespect to the instrument, like it has any limitations already, when you have not even decently explored it, performed with it - either solo or in an electroacoustic combo, the latter could be very interesting - this is just an excuse, I mean bringing in MIDI, of not being able to well explore all Terra could seamingly offer, and beyond - and you have not really conjured the unexpected yet...please get back to Terra, and tame it...

I respect your personal opinion and I can relate to your roast, but there's NO WAY your personal opinion is better than mine. Don't judge people. Try to understand them and there will be no need to judge other people's work. Who defines what a decent explore is? Why is it disrespectful to read the manual and explore all the little gems Vlad Kreimer has been hiding in it? Did you even read it? I watched a few of your videos and I unconditionally loved them. It's not so hard. Even you can do it.

@@CinematicLaboratory I sounded harsh, yes, indeed, but I did not mean to be disrespectful...I know you are capable of more than 'beautiful' videos - and I would like to hear and watch that sort of things with whatever instrument/device you may choose - a consistent and full performance!...I sounded harsh, probably because I was a bit angry, I have expected more Terra then anything else, a pure Terra madness, if you know what I mean...keep on the great work, and thank you for watching my stuff...

@@noewacreativemusic6794 Wow, that sounds so much better. Maybe you missed my first Terra video, which was like a first encounter and it was love at first sight. I think Terra is one of the most beautiful instruments I've heard in a long time, but I am still in my infant phase with it. But this is also a modular dedicated channel and I am doing Soma sidesteps because I am a huge fan. As you may have seen in the video, I emphasize the Terra is designed to use and explore on its own, on your lap like a 21st century hang drum. I would NEVER use it as a midi controller because I think there are better options for that. I can now speak from my own experience but I encourage people to find out for themselves. For me, personally, it was great to noodle with Terra, record something in Arbhar, move a Terra knob and see Arbhar respond. It's just great to be able to dial Terra's FX and let other FX modules follow its lead. It took me a week to make this video and it was a LOT of trying, testing, failing, etc. I love honest personal opinions and your concerns were valid. I just feel people could use a little more 'I feel ...' or 'I think ...' instead of just generalizing and make it sound factual as a ruling judge. I am for total expressive freedom and I try to have fun with all means necessary. In the 'modular world' we don't judge, we try to support every possible gender, every skill level, all means, modes, methods and all personal opinions without being competitive. The love for music comes first. As for expectations, live is more fun if you expect nothing and be thankful and happy for/with any sign of progress. Thanks for your comment!
