    there's a great video essay/lecture on the TAIC channel about guiding where a guy mechanically tuned his AVX while explaining how guiding works in very understandable detail. TLDR short exposure guiding is usually necessary for lower performance mounts, while longer guiding exposures are better in general, the longer the exposure, the more accurate the guiding will be by eliminating atm turbulence through averaging and multiple stars. My CEM60 loooves 3s expos, and my AVX needed 0.5s for its best guiding.

    My experience is in line with yours, but I've been plagued with cloudy nights and haven't finished all my testing. I had no trouble getting excellent guide results with an Optolong L-Extreme filter and a Redcat 51. I did experience trouble with my 3nm Antlia filters and my 127mm Televue refractor, but that was at gain 100. I suspect that at a higher gain (say 300, which was what worked for the Optolong), it will work fine. I will also try the out-of-focus trick if need be.

    Thanks for your advice. Great video. I went with the 2600 pro Air and have loved it after getting the guiding set.

    Great info! I never heard anyone mention setting the guide camera slightly out of focus. I'm glad to see you are already, or close to, being able to resume your normal lifting routines.

      Thanks. Its and old trick. It's in a lot of astrophotography books but like I said the internet has transmitted the other point of view only.

      Hm, I wonder if it has to do with suppressing the random movement of seeing a bit...? In any case thanks for the tip. I'll try it out! :)

      I have heard that by being slightly out of focus is increases the apparent size of the star that is being guided on which makes it easier to calculate the exact centre of the guide star

    I’m just finishing-up with a fictionalized biography of Galileo. Can you imagine how fascinated (and envious) he’d be about the equipment featured in this video, that anyone of sufficient means can just go out and buy?

    Not convinced with 3nm filters and refractors with f7

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  Месяц назад

      I do not have need for 3nm. If you do the math ruffly a 3nm will pass as much light at f7 as a 5nm at f10. Granted though you really need to be in a borate 7+ to justify a 3nm filter.

      @@TheNarrowbandChannelHi I have the same setup as shown in ur video except I was testing an 8” EdgeHD with 3nm antlia SHO filters. Ur right, I had to tinker with guide exposure time (up to 4.5s), gain of 350 and a guide gain of 85-100. I also had to reduce imaging exposure down from 5 to 3 min, but I’ll tell you, I’ve got successful stacked subframes. I need more testing, but I’m impressed so far. Good video!

      @@johnrobertson1953 The edge has some vignetting as its image circle is not as large as this camera needs. With a scope with larger image circle you should have not issues.

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  Месяц назад

      Two questions. How long are your guiding exposures and what is the image circle size of your scope.

    • @jaredwilds3833
      @jaredwilds3833 Месяц назад

      @@TheNarrowbandChannel not sure on image circle size. I’m using an explore scientific ED-127 CF. I’m having to crank the gain extremely high and exposures 5-6 seconds. I’m Bortle 5 almost 6, so this could be an issue as well. The filter used is a 2 inch Optolong LUltimate 3nm. I feel like the image circle isn’t large enough for the guide camera, as it looks like it’s partially blocked.

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  Месяц назад

      @@jaredwilds3833 Image circle size is probably the problem. A focal reducer reduces the size of the image circle just in the way it works. Gain for the 220 should be 350 there is were it works best. Your not imaging with it so don't be afraid to use the gain the gives you the best guiding.
