- M. Karunanidhi, M. G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa inspired Iruvar. Mani Ratnam considers it his best film. Why? Reasons can be many. Its cast. Besides former Miss World Aishwarya Rai making her film debut, this political drama featured Mohanlal, Prakash Raj, Revathi, Tabu, Gautami and Madhoo. Rahman didn't spare any effort scoring its music. Grammy winner Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Bombay Jayshree & Unnikrishnan came together for one song. Asha Bhosle, Hariharan and even Arvind Swamy sang for Iruvar. Besides delving into the Iruvar, this episode looks at Love Birds (1996) featuring Prabhu Deva & Nagma. Rahman introduced British singer, songwriter, and reggae DJ, Apache Indian. Yet a song by KS Chithra - overshadowed the entire album. Unnikrishnan was part of both the films. This was a super episode...All three songs in the episode are personal favorites and probably some among the best of ARR...'Narumugayee' I am pretty sure would be close to top in any ARR list as it had a perfect mix of everything - superb lyrics, outstanding singing, great instrumental usage apart from the classic melody and to add to the charm it was picturized perfectly as well ...I was very disappointed that ARR didn't get the national award for Iruvar, as an album, it had everything and each of those songs continue to enthrall people still. Coming to 'Naale Ulagam', lyrics is personally my favorite part of that song - I don't think it depicts any negativity rather depicts the depth of love because those statements are not to be taken in literal sense, anyway wonderfully renditioned by Sujatha and Unnikrishnan but I think the picturization wasn't great...Sangamam as an album is just outstanding, the way he mixed folk with classical in the whole album means it would be cherished forever... Unfortunately the movie was a flop and that has impacted it gaining more wider popularity I believe (album was certainly a major hit in south India)...Always wondered about why ARR didn't do more songs with Bombay Jayashree (who was brilliantly utilized by Haris Jayaraj), maybe the answer lies in what Unnikrishnan said in this episode...Thanks for bringing these

Iruvar I personally feel is Mani Ratnam’s best film objectively. It’s perfect in every aspect. From the acting to the cinematography to the background score to the complexity of the plot to the songs,it’s a masterpiece through and through. It’s not my fav film of his but i can definitely say it’s his best on a objective basis. Probably my 4th fav film of his filmography!

Great songs sung by him were showcased esp. Iruvar song which is outright classy and is a favourite song for contestants in many South reality shows. The Mohan veena bit played by a famous musician is even more icing on the cake 🍰 along with the vocals. Infact, all of Iruvar songs are one of my favourite.
Ofcrs, it is our first CD of Rahman we listened when we shifted from playing cassettes to CDs. Each and every song for a period film has been so well and differently composed and definitely yes, the acoustic sounds were heard so well in our 600watt Philips music system then which now if I recollect had more DTS than Dolby sound effect as is also discussed here. Tbh, I was more mesmerised by the surround split sound of DTS than the heaviness of Dolby digital at that time. Even in theatres, it's a huge fascination back then to watch a movie in Dts 6 track which after 10 years down the line was not a thing anymore! But those days are still cherished for even these small reasons.
