  • This is a HILAND patio heater. Model # HLDSO1-CG. I was visiting a friend who asked me to look at his heater. He was having trouble getting it to start. These heaters are not difficult to work on. Access to the working parts is simple. These units and gas fireplaces all work on the same principles of operation. I don’t work on this stuff very often. I would think the thermocouple would be a good place to check if the pilot would not stay lit. In this case I started from the beginning of the fuel supply and worked my way thru. If I was getting fuel to the pilot and it would not stay lit I would test the thermocouple. I hope yo enjoy the video.

    Thanks Roger, your trick with the aerosol into the pilot tube was the fix for me. I thought the pilot was clear but it wasn't - compressed air cleared it. Also, if the pilot and thermocouple aren't working, the main gas supply valve will shut off and the unit won't light under any circumstances. So you saved me the cost of replacing the main control valve and thermocouple. Thanks for uploading your video.

      Hi mattwaters. Thanks for taking a look at the video. I hope that you get your patio heater going again. Most of them seem to have a very simple fix. Once you understand how they work it’s not that hard to figure out what the problem is. Just take your time and use the right size tools as a lot of the parts are made out of soft brass. It’s easy to round off the corners on some of the nuts. Thanks for taking the time to watch and post. Good luck. Roger.

      Hi gguezille. I’m glad the video helped to solve your problem. It seems a common problem for many of these units. Good part there are no parts required. Seems a shame that some units were probably thrown out for the same issue. Thanks for watching and posting. Roger

      Hi Peggy Peterson, I’m glad it worked out. I’m sure some people have thrown their heaters out because of the factory using too much thread sealant.

    Enjoyed your video. Very professionally done compared to other videos on this topic. I like the fact that you fixed it without disabling any of the safety features. I am in the process of fixing my heater that came with a house we recently purchased. It sometimes works but most of the time It lights but won’t stay lit after releasing the gas control knob after 30 to 60 seconds. I purchased a new thermocouple off Amazon for $13 . I will find out this morning after it gets light out and I reassemble the unit if that fixed it our not. It came with a new tip over device which I also installed. By the way, my unit has a electronic igniter, not a pilot light. The igniter works fine.

    • @repairitdontwreckit4257
      @repairitdontwreckit4257  Год назад +1

      Hi Ronald Hartl. It sure sounds like it is the thermal couple. If you have a multimeter that will give you millivolt readings you can test the old one first. There are a ton of videos on RUclips on how to do this. This way if the thermal couple is good you could return the new one. Sometimes the thermocouple tip gets a little dirty. You could lightly sand it with a Scotch-Brite pad to see what happens. If you get it working either you could leave it in or put the new one on. It’s a very small voltage so make sure all the connections are tight and everything is clean. Most propane heaters you would push the red button to let gas come out of the pilot tube and would light it with the electronic igniter. The reason you hold the button is is to warm up the thermal couple so it produces a small voltage to hold the main gas valve open. If the thermal couple is not producing enough voltage it will drop out and shut off the gas as a safety feature. If it is really windy sometimes the wind can blow the flame off the thermal couple and it will drop out . Lastly if the pilot flame is not strong enough it won’t heat up the thermocouple properly. There are a few things to check before you throw parts at it. Thanks for checking out the video and your comments . Good luck. Roger

    Hi ricardo manual. Thanks for checking out the video. The switch should reset when the heater is put in the vertical position. If it doesn’t reset it is probably defective and needs replacing. But it should be diagnosed before assuming it is the problem as it could be coincidental that there is another problem. When I tested mine it shuts down when the heater is tilted 30 degrees from vertical. Once it was back in the vertical position I could relight it. I hope this helps. Roger

    Hi BrianWfd133 You’re right! They all have the same design and safety controls. Always check for the certification label on any gas appliance when purchasing new or used. It’s seems even different manufacturers have the same problem. You can see the opening in the pilot tube is real small. It doesn’t take much to blocked it off with some debris. It’s fun to see people getting there heaters going after watching a video. If it’s not working you have nothing to lose. Thanks for your comments. Roger

    Hi ricardo manual. Thanks for checking out the video. If you put the heater in the vertical position it should reset on its own. You would have to relight the pilot. though. When I tested mine it shuts down when it is tilted around 30 degrees from vertical. If it doesn’t reset I chances are good it is defective.

      Everything works from it starting up
      It’s just not burning the way it should , it mainly just regular fire
      And I don’t get that rich burn my other heaters give out
      The flame is just weak

      @@davidmorales3454 If your confident nothing is blocked I would try a different regulator. Its easy to remove yours from the heater and attatched a known good. If you have a gas bbq that uses propane you may be able to use it for testing. If that solves the problem great. If not then the main valve on the heater could be the problem. Double check to make sure no spiders have not made a web in a hidden area in the gas supply tubes and pipes. The webs can easily block the tubes especially if there are internal screens. Take as much apart as you can to inspect. If the pilot and main flame are not strong it seems like a gas supply problem or a slight blockage in the system that serves both flames. Carb cleaner under pressure in a can seems to work pretty good.

    Can a fuel filter be added to the unit?

    • @repairitdontwreckit4257
      @repairitdontwreckit4257  Год назад

      Hi Paul Ohalloran. To answer your question it is possible to add a filter. I’ve never seen it and don’t believe a filter is available. All of these heaters are designed to operate on a specific pressure. Adding a filter would probably create an operating issue which could create a dangerous situation. Also altering any equipment that has been certified is a big no no. Since propane is heavier than air it can build up at ground level and not self vent to the atmosphere in the event of a leak. Propane has the potential to be very dangerous if not given the respect it deserves. The blockage in the gas flow that the heater in the video had was created from assembly at the factory. If there is a problem with blockages due to contamination in the field you would need check the hose, regulator and fittings to find the source. I never experienced this but anything is possible. It’s a long answer but I wanted to make sure that anyone reading this understands not to alter any gas fired equipment. Thanks for checking out the video and posting a great question. Roger

    • @repairitdontwreckit4257
      @repairitdontwreckit4257  5 месяцев назад

      Hi richardmr. For some reason I missed your question. The tilt switch cannot be reset manually. I’m not quite sure but I believe it’s like a mercury. switch in the old style thermostats. The way you re- set the switch is by putting the patio heater in the vertical position. In the vertical position the switch should be closed allowing the heater run. If it tests open in the vertical position and all wires and connections are good it is defective and should be replaced. I know it’s late but others may benefit from reading the comments. Thanks for posting. Roger
