• Raising and butchering...
This is a three part series that starts on day one and goes through to packaging. I use a wizbang style plucker for feather removal and ended up with 95 chickens on butchering day. Thanks for watching
Great tutorial buddy. Thanks for taking the time to put this together as it will be very helpful for me.
My grandfather passed away, and now i will take care of his farm, very helpful video
Thanks for checking it out, I'm glad it was helpful!
Believe it or not a very helpful video. Thank you for your effort. I am planning a small farm in the Philippines. So information on how and why are great. wish there was more about your homestead it would be very helpful for me to plan mine.
Thank you.. I've checked for the most informative video, on this subject... Yours wins hands down.. You have given us, a beginner to the end product.. Thank you again.
your going to be busy there buddy when you get the process started on butchering...You will be dreaming about it...I cant believe how fast those birds grew...Hope you get that weasel to...Good video buddy...Thumbs up...
I love thia series and your videos! Can you tell me how large your space was to start brooding them?
Thanks for the video. Your birds look very healthy
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
How many Kg per day do they consume?
No it was three of us today. I've done it alone, it's not a lot of fun solo. Part 2 should be up in about 5 minutes. thanks for watching, have a good one!

It was a long day. Lots of chickens and I have the flu, not a good combo. I haven't caught the weasel yet, but I'm still trying. Thanks for checking it out!
I'm glad you liked it! I'm doing another series on pigs that I will have up in the fall. Kind of the same idea... piglet to bacon. Have a good one!
Nice video and wow that is 450 + lbs of chicken.
How do you feel these compare to various heritage birds? I understand they're economically easier as they grow much faster, but I also know their foraging drive is non-existent. Big meat eater here so I'm certainly not criticizing your methods (much better than commercial!), but I hate seeing a bird that simply "can't bird" ya know? 10% mortality rate isn't bad either. Way to be responsible for your meat consumption - best wishes!
A 95% survival rate on the chicks awesome
It's amazing how much the broiler chicken has been "modified"; I bet they don't even know how to brood now as it was probably eradicated through selective breeding as well...
They are not the most spectacular of the chickens, but they sure know how to make meat
Hey man I really enjoyed your video and am very interested in opening a small poultry farm but I have a few questions.
1. How long do you grow your birds?
2. What is the average weight at the time of slaughtering?
3.How much do you spend, I mean to buy day old chicken plus feed till time of slaughtering. 4. Which chiken feed is the best in terms of nutritional and medicinal content.
Thank you
Thanks for checking it out! I raise my birds for 7 weeks, the average weight is 6.5#'s. it depends a lot on your feed cost as far as total cost, I've got mine down to around $5 a bird start to finish. For commercially produced feed, I would use purina. Best of luck!
@@backyardmeat good day, I didnt get the response you provided correctly concerning the average weight of the birds. Do you mean 6.5lbs or 6.5 kg.
@@emmanuelchiabuotu2676 # means pounds. Also, he says pounds in the video.
put some haze all round they at bro. Less cleaning, less smell, and good way to keep it clean for a long time. haze is a win, win ideas.
Not sure what haze is
Got a Chick-fil-A ad.. ironic
Great video do you butcher them for your self? Waiting for part two keep up the great vids
How do u make them big..wat do u give them to avoid mortality
Awesome.
Thanks!
They r too lazy n slow, good video I learnt something here, am going for it start with 250 broilers.. Wao good business
Thanks for checking it out, and the best of luck with your flock!
I know this is an older video but can you let me know how much feed you went through feeding them?
I have 100 comming this monday.
You'll end up around 10-12# of feed per bird, if you are feeding them with a 18% or high protein feed. It also will depend on you're butcher size of course. Just keep in mind they grow a ton between weeks 5 and 7 so if doesn't seem like you are using very much feed to start they will really pack it away at the end
backyardmeat thank you very much.
whats the mortality rate of your chicken?
Thanks!
Thanks for vedeo
Please can you tell me what you put down the chekin and where I can find feed for cheken
We pull down wood shavings and the feed is available at any live stock feed store
where do you buy your chickens?
Jenk's Hatchery
What is your Sq Ft for those 100 birds ? lets say I have space and funds IF I decided to raise 1,000 - What is the minimum Space to do it ? How many people should manage the process ? from point A to B - What is the estimated time to do it ? Hope you can share some estimations ........Good Job
My birds have a 18x14 indoor space and a 25x 100 outside space, they only used about 25x20 of the outdoor space. A basic rule is you need a minimum of 3 square feet per bird (in my opinion). As far a the management I did everything until we butchered, I had 2 others that helped on butchering. The day to day stuff was maybe 20 minutes a day, the total time line from chick the to block is 6-8 weeks. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask. thanks for checking it out.
the necessary space is one square foot per chick
Do you guys get straight runs?
I just ordered about 30 Cornish cross for my family and a couple to sell to neighbors and was wondering why some people chose not to use medicated feed and no corn. I'm leaning torwards the non gmo non medicated meat mostly due to the demographic I have around my city so it'll sell quicker but does it honestly make any difference in the meat? Some people swear by it
No it makes no difference that I can tell, I have since gone to a non gmo grower but I still start with medicated for a week or so just to keep my survival rate high
those are sum happy chic kings
They are happy and healthy for sure
do you sail for meat
We don't sell any of it, just for us and friends and family
do u have to use a heat lamp can u use a standard set of spot lights and put them dow close to the chicks
I use a heat lamp, but the anything that keeps them at around 80 degrees will work
thank u
Don't know if you have ever come across this I had sold two peeps that had been hatched in my incubator person realized they were roosters after they were about 4 months I had told the customer to bring back I kept them from the other flock since roosters I was going to slaughter them after I fed them my food for a cpl weeks I did so but in slaughtering I noticed one of them having black in their bones and there intestines the second one was not as bad but did show signs of turning black inside even the meat turned black they showed no sign of weakness or sickness very active have you herd of this what would have caused it. And yes from now on If I sell birds there gone no returns.
I haven't seen that in a "fresh" bird, this will happen when you cook them if they have been bled out well.....but it's sound like this was well before they were cooked. That sounds more like cancer, but I would be surprised to see it that bad in such young birds
I noticed it when cleaning them after killing and yes they were bled well so it wasn't that I was thinking along same line of cancer
How often do you change the wood shaving as the bedding?
Depends on how many... for 100 it's every other day
nice call, it was 463lbs.
It's hilarious how he's talking about killing them right in front of them
I'm pretty sure they don't speak English
Good point
H ow many pounds of each foods do you go through? And what is the protein % by chance? I raised 100 last year, and didn't keep track. This year I have so many orders I will need to do minimum of 200!
.5#-1# of 18% starter feed and 11-12#'s 18% grower feed per bird.
+backyardmeat and what was the average processed weight? and thanks for the reply!
5#'s for spring and fall birds ....5 1/2# for summer birds if it's under 90 degrees during the days and over 50 at night
My question is I have access to Barley its from brewery 36% protein and 11% fats would this be ok to feed them cut on feeding cost
Once it's brewed there's not much left for nutrition, I tried it on my very first batch and they where the toughest, stringy, small birds I have ever raised
Why did you save not breeding stock. I know they are crosses, but why not breed them yourself?
Time, space and year round feed. I can buy them for $1.29 and couldn't raise a breeding flock for even close to that
+backyardmeat Thx about to retire from fire service. The family has about 360 acres of disconnected farm land RUclips has become my school. I pick up ideas and develops some of my own. I wonder how meat chickens would do on fodder?
James Morton I've heard of people raising them on fodder, the only thing everyone seems to agree on is that they take longer...though tougher they are better flavored......but I've never tried it
They're a hybrid which means they won't breed true.
how many days from chick to butcher? say its 45 days, if i wait till 65 days will the meat be tuff or? pros cons? avg days to butcher corncross.?
I raise mine 7 weeks, if you go much longer their legs can start to fail and they are tougher
wow their legs failing, never thought of that. firsttimer with 50 corncross...25 days in.. im just starting to notice their lazyness, laying down or sitting while eating. 🐔🐔🐔 thanks for the response blessings to you and family ✌ ♻♻♻♻♻♻♻
i have bought 50 chicks. All is fine but every morning i found one dead because the night they crowd each other. What can i do to solve this problem? I have plenty of room for their size but they go and crouch all together. In 6 days i have lost 6 chicks.
Having multiple lights and spreading out the feed and waters will help. If they are smothering each other they probably aren't warm enough
+backyardmeat they a cold...
Why are they so cramp and in a dark place. They need fresh air and to be able to roam around and eat natural.
They have a quarter acre, how much area do you raise yours on? The dark cramped space is the barn that they go into at night,....when it's dark so they don't get eaten by predators
How often do you need to clean up the place where chickens are?
It depends on how many you have, with this many it's every other day
+backyardmeat I see, thanks
Are they too immature to lay eggs?
Yes, they wouldn't start laying until around 6 months
The ignorant human perspective is that they're messy critters, the perspicacious vantagepoint realizes that you just have way too many birds in one space and that otherwise they would be perfect manure spreaders on the pasture that they should be on whenever available. Raising them on other than pasture is only acceptable when there is no other option or you have such a dynamic and efficient system that for all intents and purposes, they have been pastored even though you don't move them. You're letting chemicals do a lot of the heavy lifting here where an ancestral setup married to modern equipment and give you the most nutrient-dense meat. There are a whole lot of costs that are not getting calculated here, and they aren't unimpactful
Pls what is the using of the metal in thee room
I'm not sure what you are asking
how much profit do you make on each chicken, grown form chick, on average?
Most of the chickens we raise are just for us to eat. The few that I sell to friends and family I make around $7 a bird
backyardmeat not bad, thanks for replying.
Hello sir. Can I use some clips from this video. We're making this report about broiler chickens in school.
yep, go right ahead
@@backyardmeat you are awesome, I love the fact that you try to respomd to the questions posted on channel. Not many youtubers do that. I salute you.
they're so silent and lethargic :( why? cos they're naturally so huge?
They are just a lazy breed of bird, I did shoot some of the clips in the early morning or evening so they went up and going for they day. Red rangers are a more active meat breed, but grow slower
Did you ever get that weasel??
We caught one, and out cat got one too. He haven't had any problems with them this year...(fingers crossed) thanks for checking it out!
We have them here in southern Calif. I had a neighbor lose 4 to those damn Weasels. They use Gopher tunnels to to gain access. I'll build a box like yours...Thank you.backyardmeat
Too bad the weasels aren't vegans, lol.
G Whiz too bad you are not vegan!
Rejane R Belanger too bad your not a meat eater!
Do you have a total amount of feed needed per 20 birds?
You would want to feed them #50 of chick starter and then 175-200#'s of flock raiser. This should get you 5-6# birds depending on conditions and weather. thanks for watching!
backyardmeat So in raising 100 birds you would buy 70 50lb bags of feed to raise 100 birds? Thanks for your help - great videos! No one gives information.
Sorry i didnt make that very clear. that was the total for all 20 of the chickens. for 100 it was 4-5 bags of starter and 17-20 50# bags for all the chickens to get to weight(10-15# per bird). If you watch part 2 I have all the cost broke out at the end of the video if you trying to estimate the cost of raising them. Thanks again!
How do people lose that many?
I raised chickens, goats, ducks and geese.
In all of 15 years we only ever lost 1 duck.
You're amazing , I've never heard of a 15 year old chicken before
backyardmeat - You seem to have misread my statement.
as a trapper , put the meat on the tongue of the trap ,
Thanks, I might have to learn how to trap someday :)
Really enjoy your channel man, but you need to get on the new content PLEASE! :)
do you still feed medicated feed?
I do, though I've cut it back quite a bit. I'm trying to do it for 10 days or less now and I haven't had any early mass die offs
backyardmeat switch your feed out to barely fodder? if you lack the land. grind it up a bit earlier mix it with the feed. it helps. a lot to cut back. ween them off it with a grown fodder mix.
kemar904 not really if it's a 3 or 4 day sprout it works really well. wheat, corn, barely, oats. all work well. ive never used medicated feed. i always did it without. due to the fact my family eats it. i also don't run these kinds of birds. because sometimes when you wait to long to harvest they can die.this advise was from a friend who told us the problem with them so we never ran them. 200 birds and 30 become breaders at the end
what breed of chicken is this?
They're a Cornish cross
did you profit on this? If so how much im interested in trying this
I raise mine for friends and family, so probably lose money every time :) I have got the cost down to around $5 a bird. At our local farmers market these same birds sell for around $17....my friends and family rate is $10 a bird which covers the cost of my birds so I'm only in it for labor. I raise around 200 a year and it comes in very handy to be able to "trade" for things too.
Do they care when you take the chicks from there parents
The chicks are hatched from incubated eggs so I'm pretty sure that's not a issue
+backyardmeat oh I get it thanks
why 7 weeks , it is to much , it should be 5 - 6 week max
, 5 week - 2.3 to 2.5 kg , 6 week will be 2.75 to 3 kg
I raise mine in the spring, they don't grown as fast when it's cooler
How can I legally sell my chickens
It depends on the state you are in, my suggestion is to sell to friends and family, they usually will take more than you can raise
I have only lost 4 from 3 years of doing it
Good for you! We only lost 4 this year out of 175, that was he best survival rate yet
I just got 400 lbs of feed for under 100 dollars buy in bulk save money
how you buy in bulk
once again i cant find part 2

are you using antibiodics?
I use medicated starter, I use to use it for the first two weeks, I'm down to the first 5 days with good results
Was this profitable bud
We don't sell them, this just about growing our own food
You are going to eat the fucking things keep them locked up
Yes I did, If you bothered to watch the video you would have realized they wheren't "locked up" after they were old enough to servive outdoors and at that point they spent all the time outdoors they wanted
BAAH............BAAAH
Yay im the 200th comment
congrats!

Chickens can't free range in 50sq Ft with only a little bit of grass they need acres if you sell them as free range organic chickens your lying
no, they technically only need to have access to the outdoors to be classified as free range . All the "free range" ones at the store are in a giant warehouse with a tiny door at the end . My area is 500 ft indoors at night and a 1/16 of a acre outdoors which they use very little of. I'm not sure where you got 50 sq feet, I'm not sure you could hardly get 100 chickens in a 5x10 area
Cornish cross is not, by nature, a free- ranging bird. This video shows reality. They could have ten times the space and it wouldn't get used. They are born to eat, they are docile, slow, and this is normal for these birds. Still a much better situation than factory raised/warehoused birds.
🚬🔥😎😎💔👸
No idea, don't speak emoji
i just rescued three of these types of chickens its the saddest thing,,, people need to see the truth how cruel this is to these birds ,they grow so fast they cant even walk then you butcher them young they dont have a life forced to eat and die for dam mankind!!!!
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it!
+debbie the pet lady Instead of eggs I throw live chicks at neighbors cars :D

+Carys Jenkins Your an idiot, stick with veggies or join the real world and see that these birds are actually better taken care of than commercially produced meat.

It's wrong to grow and butcher your own food? What world do you live in? What do you eat? Let me guess your a Vegan with Gluten allergies? Blah Blah Blah your all the same, "Poor little animals" When in reality these birds are actually take care of better than any commercial operations from any of the major brands you see in the grocery store. Join reality and stop being whining about what other people do to eat and survive.
+Bearfield Rd well said my friend
Calling this cruel is as stupid as calling school torture.
if you want cruel, go look up the giant commercially grown chickens. We need more people like this man.
How many weeks to grow them out?
I grown mine for 7 weeks
+backyardmeat only 7 weeks? Fantastic!!!!I want to grow chickens immediately
