Mianyang, a prefecture-level city in Sichuan Province, is located in the northwestern part of the Sichuan Basin, in the middle and upper reaches of the Ful River. It is adjacent to Qingchuan County and Jiange County in Guangyuan City and Nanchong County and Xichong County in Nanchong City to the east; Shehong City in Suining City to the south; Luojiang District, Zhongjiang County and Mianzhu City in Deyang City to the west; and Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and Wen County in Gansu Province to the northwest. It lies between latitude 30°42′-33°03′ north and longitude 103°45′-105°43′ east, with a total area of 20,200 square kilometers. By the end of 2020, the built-up area of the central city of Mianyang reaches 167.58 square kilometers . As of the end of 2020, Mianyang City has 3 districts, 1 county-level city and 5 counties under its jurisdiction, and the Science City Office of the People's Government of Sichuan Province is under its escrow. According to the data of the seventh census, the resident population of Mianyang City was 4,868,243 as of 00:00 on November 1, 2020.
Miangyang has been a city for more than 2,200 years since the establishment of Fuxian County in the Western Han Dynasty in 201 BC, and has traditionally been the seat of a state and county, and was later named "Mian Yang" because the city site was located south of Mian Mountain. It is the birthplace of Li Bai, the poet and Ouyang Xiu, one of the Eight Great Poets of the Tang and Song Dynasties, the hometown of Rayon, the mother of the silk of the Yellow Emperor, and the birthplace of Dayu, the founder of the Xia Dynasty.
Mianyang is the only science and technology city in China approved by the Party Central Committee and the State Council, the second largest economy in Sichuan, the seven regional center cities, the regional center city of Chengdu-Chongqing city group, and an important base for national defense research and electronics industry production. It is also known as "the hometown of Fulaku and the western Silicon Valley" and enjoys the distinctions of National Civilized City, National Sanitary City, National Forest City, National Garden City, National Environmental Protection Model City, Chinese Excellent Tourism City, National Advanced City in Science and Technology Progress, National Intellectual Property Model City, and National Advanced City in Entrepreneurship.
On December 24, 2020, Sichuan Provincial People's Government agreed to establish Mianyang Science and Technology City New District. In 2021, Mianyang's gross regional product will be 335.029 billion RMB.
