A stream of tender gladness,
Of filmy sun, and opal tinted skies;
Of warm midsummer air that lightly lies
In mystic rings,
Where softly swings
The music of a thousand wings
That almost tones to sadness.
Mine is the undertone;
The beauty, strength, and power of the land
Will never stir or bend at my command;
But all the shade
Is marred or made,
If I but dip my paddle blade;
And it is mine alone.
Midway 'twixt earth and heaven,
A bubble in the pearly air I seem
To float upon the sapphire floor, a dream
Of clouds of snow,
Above, below,
Drift with my drifting, dim and slow,
As twilight drifts to even.
For others Fame
And Love's red flame,
And yellow gold: I only claim
The shadows and the dreaming.

“Shadow River” reminds me of Celtic music…somewhat. I am constantly amazed at Elaine’s range in ways to touch so many!

I’m so happy you posted this! I was one of the UNI students who performed this at the Women Sing festival in spring of last year! Definitely one of my favorite songs I’ve ever performed during my time in choirs! Thank you so much!!!

Had a dream about a "shadow river". A grey, dirt devil type storm kept appearing atop the river, I was suppossed to enter, and ride downstream to somewhere? Then the stor would suddenly manifest, trying to stop me from entering water. The river ride downstream was my only hope, I needed to get in and go down the stream. I kept having to returning to the forest, to hide from the destruction seeking storm, me and others. We hid, awaiting a new opportunity to go back to river, and the storm would only go so far, and thengo back to river, and dissipate. We made repeated attempts to run to river before storm could apoear, and the beat it from appearing. A repeted cycle of back and fourth river, to forest yo hide. While hiding I continually was repeating, "we have to get to the shadow river". I had to know, what the heck, or where the heck, was a shadow river. Music, poetry, dreams, answers from prayer could be told, to mean something, to someone, soewhere, at a close or long distant time, to tell a certain message. Beautiful song and glad for those who make efgort to share their talent. I will be reflecting on this one, (but not too much).
