We have been using these traps for 13 years now. I have personally caught 1,848 beaver in them. Thousands are in use in the U.S. and Canada. Our trap was shown on Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe catching beaver live in Utah and transporting them into the mountains. They have been live trapping beaver in Wyoming to relocate as well.

What’s the reason for putting the trap upside down?

Several reasons. Sometimes brush or sticks can be lying on the bottom, debris that you might not see if the water and bottom are dark. If the doors fire downward they could get hung on a stick you didn't see. When the doors fire upward they come through clear water free of brush etc. so they always close and lock. When a beaver swims through the trap and fires it his back feet are often over the doors. When the door with 20 pounds of pressure fires, it lifts the beaver up and forward pushing him into the trap, offering no chance for backing out because the surface he would brace against is the closing powered door. Additionally, when runs are deep, too deep to reach with hip boots, the cage can be tossed in upside down without firing. Even with this super stability the trap is still sensitive enough to catch muskrats. As of this morning up to 1,958 beaver in the Comstock cages.

    How will it not drown?

The traps are 12 inches high and 18 inches wide. If you set the trap in 10 inches of water with two inches of air space at the top beavers can breath just fine, alive and well. You can set the traps sideways in 12 inches of water with 6 inches of air space, same thing, alive and well. You can also set the traps on land in dry sets, once more alive and well. They are using these traps to live trap and relocate beaver in Wyoming and Utah. The Comstock trap was on the T.V. show Dirty Jobs.

Olga, thanks for watching my video! Probably would be easiest just to talk to you to explain the easiest way to release a beaver from this cage. Please feel free to call me at 518-792-2371 if you'd like. Otherwise, when you are at one end of the cage the beaver most often will go to the far end of the cage away from you. When the beaver moves away you simply open the door and slide a rod through the wire of the cage underneath the opened door and out through the other side to support the door in the open position. Then simply walk around the cage to the end the beaver is against and most times you have to blow on them to get them to walk to the opened door and out!
